I went to The Fremont Senior Living and spoke with Brittany. She spent over an hour with me going through the facility and what they had to offer. She was upfront about costs and it was a good experience. I felt like she took the time to answer everything I needed and was interested in my concerns. The assisted living apartments were very clean, very new, and very nice. The staff was professional and very friendly. They looked very organized. They knew about my appointment, explained everything about my tour, and knew the whole process.

I liked The Fremont Senior Living. It felt homey because you can live in an apartment and it gave me a sense of home. The place was clean, and the staff was very nice. They asked me questions and they asked if I had any questions. They had lots of things going on like arts and games.

The Fremont Senior living facility in Springfield, Mo. is poorly managed from the corporate level, (Arrow Management), poorly operated, and severely understaffed at the local level. I spent a lifetime there one month transitioning a family Elder from independent living (IL) to assisted living (AL). I slept many nights in his apartment and took him to and from meals. I was privileged to get to know many residents and staff workers. While almost all front-line workers are kind and caring, they are overwhelmed by the volume of service needed by the residents. Service for which the residents pay handsomely. The most glaring area of poor performance on the IL side is food service. A lot of items on the regular menu are oftentimes not available. From simple items such as sliced fresh fruit and an English muffin to featured entrees. There is no real kitchen on the IL side, only a small grill for frying eggs and burgers. Most menu items and all entrees have to be transported from across the parking lot in AL where the real kitchen and cooks work to prepare food for both sides of the facility. This results in poor service and diminished food quality, (temperature and freshness), on the IL side. And on the AL side, waiting 45 minutes to an hour for your ordered food to be served is common. While poor food service is frustrating, much more significant service problems exist on the AL side of the facility. Residents are given a medallion with an “alert” button on it to be pushed when the resident requires immediate assistance. There are also pull chain alert devices in the rooms designed for the same purpose. Neither system works well at all. Not because of a mechanical or hardware deficiency, but because the minimal staff is so overwhelmed with service requests that they have become apathetic and do not respond immediately to the alarms. My Elder lay on the floor for 30 minutes after he used the system to call for help when he fell and couldn’t get himself back up. He probably would have stayed down longer if I hadn’t come to his apartment after he failed numerous times to answer the phone. My Elder requires the use of a catheter and is charged an extra fee for the Fremont to care for his needs in that area. Because the staff does not respond to his calls he most often performs those tasks himself which results in an unsanitary catheter bag and tubing. My Elder is incontinent and has to use disposable diapers and soils himself several times a day. It is not uncommon for me to walk into his apartment and smell feces because his waste containers have not been emptied. I have not decided if the floor nurse for my Elder is a Saint or an Angel, but she is one of the two. I have never met a sweeter, kinder, or harder-working person than her. The problem, however, is that D.J. has 32 residents under her care. There is no way one person, no matter how exceptional she is, can possibly keep up with that demand. Her span of control is simply untenable. This is Arrow Management putting higher profit ahead of resident care. Selecting a retirement facility may well be one of the last big decisions we make in life. Once the choice of the facility has been made and we’ve moved in, it’s a real hassle to uproot and move again. I have visited with several of the Fremont residents who feel stuck now for that reason. If you are reading this and considering the Fremont, or any Arrow facility, I would encourage you to perform thorough due diligence. Eat several meals at different times in the two dining halls. Visit with as many existing residents as possible privately in order to get their candid opinion. If your family Elder is currently a resident in one of these facilities and is not receiving the care you feel they need, complain vociferously. However, I have voiced my concerns to both the Fremont Interim Executive Director and the Wellness Director to no avail.

I went to The Fremont Senior Living. They took me on a tour of the place. However, I felt like memory care wasn't their main thing. It was a segregated part of their community. They had a nice cafeteria in the memory care portion, but I felt like they were trying to do a sales job on me instead of looking at my needs. It's okay, people are hired to do that, so I get that. I've had some problems with their staffing as to how they were going to take care of people off the main shift. I don't like this kind of thing. I was there in the daytime, and they were staffed. I think the big difference between them and the other place is that the other place just does memory care, and the Fremont was kind of doing it on the side. It wasn't their main thing. It was something they did, but they didn't emphasize it. If they're going to do memory care, I think they'll have to staff it up and make that a priority. Everyone has their niche and that wasn't theirs. The rooms were small. I saw a room and it was more like a hospital room, and I didn't see activities.

I went to The Fremont Senior Living. They were very nice and spent an hour with me. It's beautiful and well taken care of. I was treated very nicely. I saw one room that was available for me to look at. It was a studio, so it's small, but my dad doesn't need a lot of room, so it's okay. It had a very small kitchenette, a room for a bed, a chair and a TV. It's a beautiful place. The staff who assisted me, her name was Brittany, and she was really good. She was the administrator. The staff were nice. I only met two of them, and it was very good. I saw everything. I saw the health care nurse area, I saw the dining room, and I saw the kitchen. They had a room for people to gather with their family in the way of conversation, and they could have a little birthday party. They have a workout area. I think it was really clean and neat. They have a lot of activities listed. The main thing I was looking for is the social aspect, and they are probably pretty high ranked on that because they had a lot of items going on for people to take and be entertained with. They had TV and movies and all sorts of things.

We toured The Fremont Senior Living. Other than the marketing person, we haven't had any interaction with the staff necessarily too much. One day my mother-in-law went for another look. She had been there a few times and the marketing person had shown her the available room. And then another day, my mother-in-law and her daughter went to just take one more look, and the marketing person was not available, but there was a housekeeper that was there, and she was very kind and showed them the room because it was unlocked because she had been cleaning it, so that worked very well. They were very accommodating. They have a beauty salon, a library, an exercise room, and a restaurant or café that you just order off the menu at any time of the day between 7 in the morning and 7 in the evening, so you can come and order at will. They don't have a pool or an aqua aerobics pool at all, which was a bit disappointing. They have a cute little outdoor seating area adjacent to the restaurant so that people can take their food outside and eat if they wish. They have covered parking for some of the apartments. They have what they call a demonstration kitchen. If somebody wants to have a gathering of their family, like if they want to bake some cakes, cookies, cupcakes or whatever, and they want to have a larger space in which to do it, they can use the demonstration kitchen. They have a private dining room where they can serve private dinners to the residents' families if it's reserved and such as that. They have a little coffee shop area so that people can come here and get drinks 24 hours a day. They keep the demonstration kitchen stocked with different snacks and desserts that the people might want to come and grab during off hours when the restaurant is not open. They keep sandwiches in the coffee shop area as well as in a cooler there for residents to come at off hours if the restaurant is not open. I was impressed that all of their apartments have full-sized kitchens. They're stocked with full-sized refrigerators and dishwashers. I thought that was kind of a waste actually, but it was nice if somebody is still inclined to do much cooking. They certainly have a dishwasher to assist them in cleaning up. There were a few downsides to this particular location versus some other ones that we looked at, but it's the one that my mother-in-law liked best, and she's the one that's going to live there, so it's her choice. Their marketing person was very nice and pretty accommodating. I haven't eaten there, but their menu looks good as far as what's available.
