Cedarhurst of St. Charles

My wife and I have experienced two other assisted living facilities over the past year. She has spent six months here at Cedarhurst and I have spent three; we are returning to our home this weekend. We recommend Cedarhurst highly. The amenities are nice, and the food is generally good, but the real strength of Cedarhurst is the community that you become part of. The staff is caring and competent; this is what sets Cedarhurst apart from other facilities in the area. Every staff member with whom we have interacted has been highly supportive and helpful. We are glad to be going home since we have recovered from the injuries that landed us here, but we will miss the friendships that we have made among the staff and residents..

I went to Cedarhurst of St. Charles for my parents. I liked it a lot. They were very accommodating to me. It just didn't work out for the situation. I thought the place was very clean. However, they had elevators, which my mother would not have liked. That was one thing that made her nervous when we went to visit it. We tried the food, and it was very good. My mother was very nervous that day, so they accommodated us by putting us in a separate room. She didn't want to eat in the dining area. They moved people out of a room, so that she could eat there, which I thought was very nice. She has a little bit of anxiety, and she worked through some of it. They accommodated her, and I thought that was very nice. It appeared that they had a lot of things. The rooms were very nice. The facilities smelled really clean. There was a janitor cleaning the whole time when we were there. It was very clean.

We chose Cedarhurst of St. Charles for our mom because it's close to home for all of us, and we thought it was a nice place and has everything that she would need. She's in their assisted living. One of our concerns is their pendants. We pushed the pendant and it was over 45 minutes before they came to check on my mom. That happened more than once too. She also takes blood thinner and they didn't give it to her. When we asked about it, they said she's not supposed to be on that and I said she is. That was Monday, and on Tuesday last week, we had the same problem. I had to go in and talk to them and they said that they had given it to her. I asked if we could see a computer printout of that because the staff was looking at it and she said, "Oh, no. I can't do that." Instead of saying sorry, they denied what happened. They need to have better communication between the nursing staff and the director of nursing. I don't know if they have a DON or not. They told me they did when we got there for our meeting. I don't know whether she was there or she was just appointed that morning. The chef just quit, and my mom said they've been having hot dogs a lot. I think the facility is only 6 years old so they're all kept up nicely and all. I'm just kind of wondering if their nurses are outsourced. I don't know if they were actually hired by the facility or not. They have a salon but I know the lady there doesn't do seniors' hair very well. I have to take my mom out to have hers done. Some people might like the way she does theirs. The physical therapists are excellent though but I think they are not hired by Cedarhurst.

I went to Cedarhurst of St. Charles. We had a very good experience. The tour guide was friendly and upbeat. It took a while for the tour guide to get to us; we waited for a little bit. Other than that, it was actually my mom's favorite place out of all the ones that we toured. My mom really likes the wide open hallways and large entry room. One of the recreation rooms didn't smell very great, but that might have just been because of something that happened that day. Other than that, it was a good experience. They had a kitchen space. If my mom wanted to bake cookies or something, she could use that kitchen space.

When my father is ready, he will move into Cedarhurst of St. Charles. It's assisted living and memory care combined. It was very warm and friendly, and there were lots of activities for them to participate in if they wanted to. It didn't feel like some of the assisted living places I've been to in the past. It felt more like home. The staff members were all super friendly and very accommodating. I couldn't ask for a better group of people. The food looked very good. They had all kinds of snacks available. They had different stations on every floor where they could have snacks, watch TV, or play games. It's a wonderful facility. The dining area was very welcoming. It felt kind of like a restaurant-type atmosphere where they had tables of four or you could put them together for a larger group if you wanted. They offer a menu and ala carte. The rooms were very nice. We looked at studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom and they were all very well kept, up-to-date, and had a homey atmosphere to them. They have a salon, laundry facilities on each floor, and a physical therapy section. They offer transportation to doctors' visits or other places in town. They also have the option that you can have your own car if you're able to drive, so you can come and go as you please. They have security that locks the gate but you can still come and go or have visitors after those hours. They just have to be buzzed in. They have an activity schedule there each day and each week, different things and different outings. Upkeep and maintenance were excellent. It's very neat and clean. Everything was working well. It was great. After I went to Cedarhurst, I had such a warm, welcoming feeling and a feeling that it was where my dad would thrive best.

We visited both of Cedarhurst of St. Charles' assisted living and memory care, but my dad would have been in memory care, and we didn't care for that situation. The tour was fine; the tour experience with both levels was excellent. That place is probably better in the assisted living area, we just weren't as crazy about the memory care. The room was tiny, and he would have had to have been outside of his room all the time. That area was nice, but we weren't as crazy about the food in the cafeteria area. The dining room area for memory care was like a school cafeteria and wasn't homey. The facility itself looked a little bit older, but it was very nice. Their apartments had the same type of arrangement as the other place, you bring your own furniture. The staff we met there were great, they were fine. They had a gym and a salon, and the place looked very clean.
