I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mom was in the rehab unit. She was not taken care of properly. She was only given one bath during her stay. They were supposed to get her a recliner cause she couldn’t sleep in their bed and they didn’t. The food they served was horrible. I would not recommend this place for anyone. I will be letting state know

My mother-in-law is currently with Carmel Hills Healthcare and Rehab Center. The staff seems very caring. The facility is very clean and very secure. The administrative staff is unbelievably helpful when it's such a trying time and you don't know what you're doing. They have a lot of different exercises, and the rehabilitation rooms are very nice ones. I am very satisfied.

My friend has been in Carmel Hills Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center since December 10th. It's the only place I could find that I could get him in. The staff seemed to be pretty good from my contact with them. I only got to visit outside through a window because they're on lockdown due to COVID. The outside area looks good, clean and kept up. The facility has a modern design, too. It seems a pretty good facility and relatively easy to get my friend into.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

This facility is the last place any loved one should be placed. My husband was admitted in April 2019, for Parkinson’s dementia & on May 15, 2019, the receptionist at the main entrance not paying attention, buzzed my husband out of the front door, where he began wandering, not knowing where he was. There are active railroad tracks & multiple streets that he walked along. When another staff member left the facility to run an errand, she recognized my husband as a current resident, but chose to complete her errands instead of getting him safely back to the facility. Once she returned (no one would tell me how long that span of time was), she finally notified superiors who sent a handyman to find my husband. That failure to keep him safe IN the facility meant that other facilities in KS that I had been working w/to transfer him to immediately labeled him a flight risk & rescinded their preapproval. It took another couple of months to finally find a facility in KS that would accept him, causing me to have to pay fees that would have stopped once he was accepted under Kansas Medicaid. Other issues that arose during my attempt to get him into a better KS facility: - Redwood at Carmel Hills is obligated by State law to report my husband’s “elopement”, especially because they were responsible for it happening. To date, this has NOT happened, allowing the facility to maintain its rating and avoiding the fine that would have been applied for their irresponsibility & carelessness. - Redwood at Carmel Hills administrative staff either failed to send requested paperwork to potential facilities or sent outdated, incomplete paperwork, again delaying getting my husband into a better facility; - Phones were seldom answered when I attempted to get updates on my husband when I was unable to come see him; - The last 2 months he was in this facility, the security code pad did not work, forcing family/friends to go to the main entry (ironically the same entrance the receptionist allowed my husband to leave the “safety” of the facility to wander along ACTIVE railroad track). This could be a small thing, but when carrying in a load of clean laundry can be extremely inconvenient; - No one monitored who was going in/out of entrances; - Personal clothing/blankets were continually going missing. I realize this can be a challenge in large facilities, but this happened even though I made sure all items had his name clearly marked in large permanent marker in obvious areas of the item; - To date, even though my husband finally was transferred to a KS facility, the office staff STILL has not corrected my mailing address, meaning I seldom get an invoice showing payments made & outstanding amount, 4 months of which I would not have had to pay for if Redwood of Carmel Hills had not allowed my husband to go on his dangerous little hike. Please do not allow a loved one of yours to enter this facility. If you do not have a choice watch your loved one extremely closely & keep track of the staff/other residents.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My husband went in for acute rehab after hospitalization for both pneumonia and influenza A. He got pneumonia again. I wan't notified till 2 days later and was told they caught it early and he's fine. He wasn't. His leg was also swollen and nursing director, John said it was from being in bed and needs to be elevated. I insisted it be checked. He had a blood clot. Then my husband couldn't get out of bed. Care was minimal at best. Nursing director, John, told me he was lazy and didn't want to get up. I insisted he go to the hospital if they can't get him up. Now he is in ICU and may not make it. He is so sick. Was so neglected in the nursing home. This place doesn't even deserve one star. Do NOT let your loved ones go here.

A lot of the patients smell like urine. They don't get changed enough. The aides don't do anything they don't have to. Most of the time you can't even find an aide.

I visited this facility

Me and my son went to Carmel Hills during lunch, and everybody was busy, but my son said he liked the place. I talked to one of the ladies in charge who gave us a small tour, and it was nice. It's a little older, but they kept it clean and had a receptionist at the door. It wasn't that nice, but it was functional. They try to keep them busy. They have long term, rehab, and they even take in respite care.

I am a friend or relative of resident

My mother was in their memory care unit less than a month before she unexpectedly passed away. Her deterioration was extremely rapid, many problems with her medications not being administered correctly and despite my daily visits and reminders to staff to call me if there were ANY problems, they failed to call me despite being aware at least 3 hours before she passed that she had labored breathing. I didn't receive a call until she was already gone and that call wasn't from anyone on staff there. They refused to call me for a week even tho I left several requests for information and they now tell me even tho I had medical power of attorney they cannot release my mother's medical records to me. Other patients families expressed concern over the same issues I was seeing there and I've now been forced to hire an attorney to find out what happened. The smell there is overwhelming most days and the food is terrible. Anyone else who is having or has had similar issues here or has information regarding the incident with a nurse who had a breakdown on the floor on December 22nd, 2015 and a police call that had to be made regarding her on December 23rd please private message me

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My Mother is a resident. the Long term care section smells and thank goodness my Mother is not in that area. Food is poor. Some of the staff is very good and some are very bad. Communication is poor. Some of the staff complains alot and don't get along with their co workers. not responsive to maintenance issues. Don't think it is the maintenance dept. when I tell them directly, issues are resolved. I think it is poor communication.

My relative was in Carmel Hills before; however, she would like to go back there. She likes their staff. They are good and very personable. I have no problems with them. They also offer physical therapy and have professional therapists working there. Overall, it is a good facility.

Drive in the opposite direction if you care at all about your loved ones. Carmel Hills is the definition of incompentence and cannot read their own writing. We had specific instructions for my father who has dementia amongst other health concerns including walking. He came to Carmel Hills from ICU at another hospital with multiple concerns and Carmel Hills completely failed at adequate care. My dad was literally found on the floor, then allowed to wait almost 24 hours, then sent to a hospital we specifically stated he could not be sent to, and had a borken hip. Almost 24 hours later, we had to have him transported to the correct hospital. All which is clearly noted in his records. Further, the medical care is equivilent to a McDonald's drive thru. Actually, there is better service at McDonalds. The doctor ordered nicotine cessation meds for my family member who does not use nicotine products. Last but not least.....all my loved ones clothes went missing. They just cant figure out where they went, Enough said?

I have only had experience with the Alzeheimer's lock down area of Carmel Hills, but I found the staff to be outstanding. They are extremely caring of their patients and are really on top of their likes and dislikes. When there is an urine smell which happens with this type of patient, they are on it right away and have housekeeping or themselves clean it up. I am sorry that other people have had bad experences with Carmel Hills but I feel that my father is being taken care of with love and concern.

Visited this facility

BEWARE!!! Worst nursing home ever! We have had a horrible experience here with our father residing at Carmel Hills. First of all when you walk in the facility you are hit with the strong smell of unrine and feces. If you show up at lunch time it's pitiful to see all the gomered out residents in their wheel chairs lined up outside their rooms with no staff interaction what so ever. The management didn't want to deal with my father's mental health needs...so they gave us a 30 day notice of eviction. They have a lock down area but said he wouldn't be happy there, though the truth we believe to be is that he would have been too costly for them compared to their medicare reimbursement. They could never get his medication to him on time which was very important to his parkinsons. We were very disappointed with the way the social worker would handle his care as well. Over all I would never put a loved one here. Unfortunately you don't realize how bad it is until you have moved in. They're smooth talkers to get you in.

Do not Use

I would NOT recommend this facility and I will NOT take any of my loved ones their again, My grandfather was only there for a week and it was the worst week of his and our lives. Improper medications and administration of medications, very little supervision and care, negative and hostile employees. Overall I am not sure how a place can stay in business by letting patients sit in urine and feces for several hours and refusing to help them to the restroom, not to mention the mistakes with the medication and just plain ignoring the patients needs. In the week we were their I did not see one smiling face from patients to employees. Please check it out before you use the facility.
