I liked Sholom Home East, but there was no place really to walk my dog. The minute you step out the door it's a busy street. It had a swimming pool. I visited it a couple of times. The apartments were very lovely. I was considering it seriously because of the swimming pool. If you don't have a dog, you wouldn't care that when you walk out of Sholom Home on the Saint Paul area that you're on a busy street. It wasn't like New York or anything, but there wasn't any grass or park area to walk the dog. Other people might not care at all. The staff member kept calling me for the next year, every couple of months, and telling me there was an opening, but I wasn't ready. She was nice.

I visited this facility
We looked at Sholom Home East. Overall, I liked it. They showed us the assisted living portion with a bedroom and a living area with a little kitchenette attached. We could see through the glass door, and we could look through the window. The dining area was all dark. The room was very nice, very accommodating, and had a nice view of the river, but it was empty and unfurnished. They have different kinds of activities that my mom could get involved in, and we were impressed. If my mom wanted to, she could keep herself busy there, but this is assisted living, and we were treated as if my mom was meant for assisted living and not memory care. The staff was wonderful, everybody was wonderful, very friendly, outgoing, answered our questions, and encouraged questions. The facilities were clean and newer.

I went to the Shalom Home for post-operative transitional care following bilateral total knee replacements. This is an extremely painful procedure. I was there for four nights until I demanded to be discharged.
With very few exceptions, the nursing staff is completely inadequate to care for such patients. I waited up to two and a half hours for SCHEDULED pain medication. I heard every excuse in the book. Often they told me they were out of the medication and didn't have any on site. How is this possible? It was absolute torture.
I took the chance of falling to get to the bathroom because sometimes it took 20 min. for anyone to show up to help me. I never saw anything disinfected. Things laid on the floor for days. My bathroom trash was overflowing, the hand sanitizer was empty. The TV blared 24 hours a day.
The OT and PT staff were great as were the social services staff. Other than that it was a total nightmare.
They simply are not up to this level of care and should not be doing it.

My Grandmother was here for several years. The care was outstanding. The staff was friendly, kind and caring. My grandmother was well cared for. She even made some friends with the nurses. My grandmother's comments were "Nobody wants to be in a place like this, but if you have to be in a place like this - Sholom is the one to be in."

I have a sister at Shalom Home East and her care was horrible for the kind of money they charged. When my sister called for a nurse, it takes anywhere between 15 minutes to nearly 1 1/2 hour before anyone show up. My family had to clean my sister up ourselves, so she won't be soaking in her feces. When I first toured the place before moving my sister there, the facility and the staff seem decent, but given what we have witness and experience, I'd much rather go elsewhere than this place.
