I like my visit to Johanna Shores. What I didn't like is that the waiting list is too long, and I just don't feel I'm ever going to get in there. The staff that I met there was friendly, they knew all about the facility, and they answered all my questions. They have all the extra amenities, like a theater, a gym, and a fitness center. I thought it was very clean and near restaurants and hospitals. This place was ideal, and they have lovely gardens outside and lots of outdoor paths.

I am not able to leave a positive review about this place. Yes- we were in a pandemic for a few years that my Mom was there- and yes- there is a select few staff and volunteers that were helpful. If I was "that family member" and notified leadership of problems- things were done. But if you are not there all the time staying on top of everything- the care had much to be desired. Staff could not heat up soup for her as "they did not know how". And not to receive a single call back from staff to help me the week that my mother died there- you really need to do better than that.

My mother-in-law was at Johanna Shores in assisted living for a while until she moved into memory care. She lived there for a few years. I loved that place. Everything about the place was beautiful and the food was wonderful. It's just really, really lovely. They have everything you can imagine, lots of activities, a movie theater, pool tables, a beautiful outdoor patio right on the lake, and lots of social activities. Whether you're in the more skilled nursing or assisted living, they both have a lot of things. They have a nice chapel where a priest and a minister come in every week for services. I always say that if I ever had to go into an assisted living someplace, I'd sure like it to be there. It's like a resort. It's gorgeous. They didn't have room to put her where we thought she was needed, so she ended up in the more severe memory care area. She needed to be in a locked situation because she started to wander, but she didn't have Alzheimer's. She ended up having to go into their memory care, which was kind of hard for her because she wasn't as bad off as a lot of the other people that were in there. I know she didn't care for it too much, but they never had any open beds for her to go to a different floor, and she needed to be secured because of her wandering and getting lost and going outside. We didn't have a choice, but even there, everybody was still very nice and competent. It's just that they didn't have room for her on the other floor. You can never say anything's perfect because of staff issues. Sometimes, some of the caregivers weren't quite as attentive or good as others. They had a dining room with a full menu that they could pick from every night and even at lunch. It was nice, and she was lucky enough to get in there with her elderly waiver at the time. We got very lucky with that because that's another one that's hard to get into. We're on the waiting list there, too, for my dad, but there hasn't been anything. I feel like it's a very safe environment and people there were well cared for generally.

We were considering a nursing home at Johanna Shores. We didn't like what we saw at the nursing home part. The independent living and assisted living I'm sure are much different, but we did not tour that. It's a typical nursing home. We were turned off because there just was no view particularly from the windows of their rooms. Some of the rooms were small and it just didn't seem like a homey environment. It was sterile, more like a hospital. It just wasn't what we were looking for. The young lady that gave us the tour was a very fine young lady. She was very accommodating. She gave us a packet to look at to take with us. She was very nice in showing us around and talking to us. They have activities, they just weren't going at the time that we were there, I guess. She showed us the activities room but nobody was in there at the time. It just to us was not appealing. It wasn't a place that I felt I wanted my loved one to be in.

The biggest thing about Johanna Shores is that it's a Presbyterian facility, so there was no Sunday mass or chapel times for my father (being that he's Roman Catholic). It's a beautiful facility. He could use the chapel of course, but they didn't have any services for him. They didn't have a swimming pool, but they had a nice feature of pontoon rides on the lake that they were on. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. The one thing when we went through is that it seemed like a lot of the staff is not there full time, and they staggered hours. That was kind of hard to figure. They have about five different eating options there. The facility is beautiful. It's got nice, big gathering rooms and very tall ceilings in the common areas.

When I walked inside Johanna Shores, I was in awe. It felt like I was on vacation in a beautiful venue outside of the city. The tour was so pleasant and nice, and I was shown the amazing grounds and the outdoor spaces, including a lake with activities, and lots of open pathways and greens. Inside the levels were so well laid out, and access to dining areas made a lot of sense, and had a lot of variety. The levels of dining options would be a draw to those who love that kind of variety. The theater was wonderful, when I learned about access to healthcare, how they would coordinate either through their own, or residents can coordinate through their health service, that was really interesting, and really a draw. The rooms were very nice, they had a nice layout, and floor plans. Overall, it felt a lot like it was a little oasis outside of the city. I didn't have a meal, but I really did like all the options they had for dining, the restaurant style, and the regular four-level style.
