Courtyard Manor of Farmington Hills is one of the few special facilities that have a behavioral care unit. The other places were not prepared to deal with somebody who has aggression and psychosis, and they're just nursing homes or their memory care units were just a bunch of people with Alzheimer's that weren't aggressive. They have a psychiatrist on staff and my brother-in-law needs to have his medications monitored and adjusted. There's a high staff-to-patient ratio. They go through specific training to deal with patients that have psychosis and other issues in terms of how to handle somebody who's violent or abusive. They have several structured activities that he can participate in when he can. The facility is clean, secure, and attractive. It's a place that I would go to. They rate their prices between $6000 and $7000 a month and their residents are classified one through three, one is requiring minimal care and three is requiring one-on-one care.

I do not recommend this facility for your loved one. The care that my parent received was awful...neglectful at best. I visited many times, and with the exception of Brian (Activity Director), I never saw the staff engage the residents, except to command them ("take your medicine", "come and eat", "take your medicine", ...). My loved one lost 30 pounds in less 1 year (and they aren't in end stage dementia), was over-medicated, and often found shoeless, wearing the same clothes for 2 days in a row (and the clothes usually weren't even my parent's). They aren't designed to help your loved one thrive. For example, there is no exercise (no walking area available, so all they can do is laps inside the building) no activities (no activities room), the music is from the 80's (more for the staff, than for the residents), and several times the movies on the community TV were extremely inappropriate (horror and/or very sexually explicit). They are simply there to make sure their residents eat (barely) and takes their medicine.

Courtyard Manor is great. I like it, and it seems good. My dad is in memory care. It is very clean. It does not smell, and is just comfortable. It is maybe a little sparse, but it is nice. The staff has been so helpful, caring, and understanding. They try to explain things to help us understand the process of aging, especially with Alzheimer's. They have been awesome. Right now, because of COVID there are fewer activities. Normally they would go out and do things. They do have the courtyard, and my dad loves plants. He really enjoys that. The dining room is clean. The food is not overly fancy, but it is simple and good.

Good care, but beware! We are generally pleased with the level of care my mother received at Courtyard Manor including care in her final days; HOWEVER MY MOTHER'S JEWELRY WAS MISSING when we claimed her remains. I recognize we should have been more proactive in securing Mom's belongings, but with all the other details of her care it slipped our minds. NEVERTHELESS as a memory care facility, Courtyard Manor should discuss with family members a plan to secure precious possessions like wedding rings. My mother had dementia, so there are many possible explanations for the lost items, but Courtyard was no help and only pointed us to their liability release in the end. That is CYA, not above and beyond care. Make a plan and make sure your loved ones most prized possessions are accounted for and safe.

My mom is at Courtyard Manor of Farmington Hills, and so far it's been very good. With COVID precautions, I have not been able to actually get in there, but I spent quite a bit of time talking with various people there, and I'm able to contact them whenever I need. My mom is also in hospice, and they are coming in there on a regular basis right now. The first two weeks that she is there, she will be in their quarantine unit. After that, I will be able to see her and get in there with an appointment, and I'm looking forward to that, but so far so good. Everyone I talked to has been very helpful and very polite; they answered all my questions and offered a lot of insight. One of the things that I really liked about the place was they seemed to have staff longevity there, which is really nice to hear, as opposed to a lot of staff turnover. It's also well within our price point right now, so that's a plus. A lot of the other facilities were just more than what we could afford.

Our family has been extremely pleased with the care our loved ones have received at Farmington Courtyard. The rooms are cozy and inviting allowing the residents to add their own personal touches The common areas allow room for individual and group activities. We are particularly pleased with how quickly the nursing staff addresses any medical changes with the residents and keeping the family informed of the action being taken. Staff and administrators have all been very accommodating making sure that the residents are comfortable. Having our loved ones there has given us Peace of Mind.
