I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I visited some friends in Chelsea Retirement Community (UMRC). It's clean, and it has nice facilities. I've been there several times because I know a lot of people who have been there. It's an excellent place. Everything is good. The food is good, and they have a nice dining room. They also have a card room. It's a very nice place. I have not eatten there myself, but the people that have been there say the food is very good. The staff is very helpful. Everybody that I've known who went there is very happy. I saw residents playing cards.

Chelsea Retirement Community does rehab there and it's actually awesome. The tour and the experience there were both awesome. They have one of the best physical therapy places in Michigan and the staff is nice and friendly. They have activities still going on. They're still eating in the dining hall together there. It's just overall fantastic. They have a set schedule to use the shower. The people are so friendly. The food is topnotch for a hospital or a rehab. We are trying to get my mom over there for rehab. The private rooms are a really good size because there's only one bed in there. They don't have many two-bedrooms; they're mostly single. They're a little tight. Overall the rooms are clean. They come and change their linens every day. It's a comfortable place where I would be comfortable putting my mom. The food is very good.

My dad is in Glazier Commons in Chelsea Retirement Community now. I like its hominess, and it’s close to my home. They take care of all of his needs. He loves the food, which is a big thing for him. He has his PT and his OT there. His own doctor does rounds in this community, so it’s wonderful for him. He didn’t have to change doctors. He’s allowed to have his cat there. He’s happier sitting in his room watching TV, and even though he can’t hear it, he likes to watch TV and play with his cat. The staff is very quick. He wears a call button that is around his neck, and he pushes the button and they come. I’m very happy with them. He has fallen a few times, and they call me immediately. He hasn’t been hurt, and I’m pleased.

We lived at Chelsea Retirement Community, and it’s a good place if you have lots of money. I don’t like some of their rules, like right now, there’s practically nothing I can eat in their food service program because the doctor put me on a diet. Their food is high in calories and loaded with sauces, and I can't eat it anymore. They just don’t pay attention to special requests. It’s a beautiful place, and we have a lovely home. They have trips, exercise classes, art-type classes, and there are lots of activities if you’re able to take part in them. They’re building a swimming pool right now, and it’s not going to be ready until February next year. They do maintenance on your place, they do the yards, and the landscaping around here is beautiful. They have apartments, 50 some apartments that are brand-new, and a big building that has all kinds of apartments, from house-size to studios, so there is variety. We have two bedrooms, two handicap bathrooms, a kitchen/dining room, a living room area in a big room, and it’s very nice. The apartments are well-designed so that the people are comfortable. We have assisted living, a hospital, and a rehab center.

My husband ended up going with Chelsea Retirement Community. It’s a nice community and feels more home-like. The staff was very friendly and very nice. They get him up for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, which is nice. They have a very nice dining room. They have very nice food and a very wide selection. The therapists are really good; they seem to be very caring and very knowledgeable. The aides are very caring, too. They have a lot of activities going on.

Chelsea Retirement Community is a big complex with every type of living for seniors: independent, assisted, skilled nursing care, and a rehab unit where my dad was. It wasn’t skilled nursing care although they did that for him. They rehabbed him really well. When he came out, he was really strong, well-fed, and clear of mind. I didn’t get to know the personnel as well because they were very busy. They had a lot of people who needed help more than my dad did, and they were really full, but they were very responsive. He had a private room that looked like a hospital room. The bed was a hospital bed, the bathroom was quite large, and it had lots of closets. The furnishings were nice, but it was more of a hospital setting. They had a dining room, several community rooms that looked like little parlors, and they had a lot of outdoor spaces with beautiful gardens that they could go into. The unit was in this large hospital that they took over and made into all these different things. There were a lot of activities going on and a lot of rooms that they can go to for these activities within this big building. They were always coming in and asking my dad if he wanted to go to bingo or to hear people sing or to go to the room where they had music. It had the most activities of any places I have ever seen.

The staff at this facility is amazing! They treated my mom so well like she was part of their family. Dee and the rest of the staff were wonderful. While my mom was battling the effects of inoperable brain cancer, the beautiful people here took outstanding care of her. I cannot say enough about CRC. I trusted them with one of the most important people in my life (rest in peace mom), and they exceeded my expectations. God bless CRC, the staff, and the residents.

My wife stayed at Chelsea Retirement Community. It was very good, and the medical staff seemed to be very good and met my wife's needs. The food looked very good. They had a really good staff who were courteous and took care of the patients' needs. They had activities like bingo. My wife liked the place and the staff. It was clean and well run.

I like Chelsea Retirement Community, as far as the retirement community is concerned. I like the number of different rooms available. There are different options available for senior living. One thing I didn’t like about it is that as far as food was concerned, they give you a monthly allotment, and you pay for your food in the dining area as opposed to it being included in the cost. I would suggest that the information about the food allotment should be clear. If they could give an idea of how much is actually spent on food, maybe that would help. The retirement community part is nice. To me, their assisted living facility looked more like a nursing home than some other assisted living facilities I’ve seen. It wasn’t all bad. It was clean and well cared for. There were activities almost every day, either within the community or they ride the bus and go somewhere. It was positive that way.

We chose Chelsea Retirement Community because it is very close to our children and their families. It is a non-profit, and it has some advantages. There is no buy-in required. It is an older institution that began many years ago. They have a continuum of care. They have individual cottages for independent living, and that was something of particular interest to us. They also have assisted living and memory care. They have a variety of activities.

The food is very good at Chelsea Retirement Community. They offer different types of food. Their staff is really adequate and we are really happy about it. This is the second time that my mom went to this facility.

My mom is in Chelsea Retirement Community. Right now assistance came about in the last couple of days, and it is all really new to me so we are just trying to get care for my mom so she can have her strength back. She had a really bad infection and was taken to hospital last week. I think they are understaffed as many of the places I am sure are, and my mom needs a lot of attention. The food is great. She is in a room, and it is very nice. She is going to occupational and physical therapies.

We chose Chelsea Retirement Community for my parents because of the quality of the care, facility and people. It was a continuous care facility so it was very attractive to us, it meant that all the care my parents needed were available inside. The location was also about ten minutes from my house so I could visit them anytime. It was a large facility with many common areas where the residents gathered and mingled. They had a nice dining area like a restaurant which provided a great opportunity for residents to socialize. There were also a lot of social programs like bands and singers. The staff were very caring and they genuinely took care of the residents. It seemed like the same staff everytime I went, so the residents got comfortable with them easily. My parents seemed adjusted and happy.

My experience with the Chelsea Retirement center was overall positive. The staff was friendly and helpful, and willing to assist my great-grandmother whenever it was necessary. The only thing that I was a little dissappointed with was the atmosphere of the center. The overall atmoshpere is rather depressing. I feel like the residents here know that this will be the last place they will reside in their lifetime. Lots of the residents seem to be sad, lonely, or afraid. The attitudes of the residents can be contagious. Many don't have friends or families that come to visit, so I always end up socializing more than I expected to. The food at Chelsea retirement center could also be improved. That seems to be a chief complaint amongst the residents. They refer to it as "hospital food". A higher quality menu would be a nice idea! Personally, I would recommend Chelsea Retirement center to anyone looking for a place to retire, if they are able to get used to the saddened atmosphere.

The aides care about the residents and do their best. But the managment is unresponsive, has cut services and is more concerned with making a profit than providing quality of care. In retrospect it was a mistake to place my mother at Chelsea.
