Guadalupe County is part of the greater San Antonio metro area, one of the largest metro areas in Texas. This is a state in which over 380,000 residents have been diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer's disease, illnesses that affect those 65 and older in particular. Guadalupe County has a senior population numbering 20,000 out of the total of 151,000, 11.7 percent of whom are estimated to be affected by Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia. To house and treat these individuals, Guadalupe County boasts a few memory care facilities, with more in San Antonio proper.Â
The state of Texas Department of Health and Human Services licenses and regulates memory care facilities. These may either be dedicated, stand-alone memory care facilities, or separate, secure wings of a larger assisted living home.Â
