What to Consider About Memory Care in Broward County

In Broward County, memory care facilities are licensed as assisted living facilities and are regulated by the Agency for Health Care Administration’s Long-Term Care Services Unit. This agency conducts regular inspections to ensure memory care facilities comply with safety and quality standards. It also provides up-to-date information on Medicaid waivers that may help cover care costs.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Memory Care in Broward County

  • There are approximately 224 doctors per 100,000 people in Broward County versus the national average of 210, which may make it relatively easy to schedule visits with primary care providers and specialists. The region is home to high-performing hospitals, such as Cleveland Clinic Weston and Baptist Health. On average, health care costs are about 4% below the national median.
  • The overall cost of living in Broward County is about 10% higher than in the state as a whole, which may result in higher memory care costs. To help older adults afford living and care expenses, the county has several nonprofit agencies and programs that provide counseling options and assistance with applying for public benefits.
  • On a 100-point crime index, Broward County’s violent crime scores 25.1, and property crime is rated 47.5. This is notably higher than national respective scores of 22.7 and 35.4. To keep residents safe, memory care facilities have security features, such as high-security locks, controlled access and surveillance cameras.
  • Broward County’s weather is warm year-round, with daytime temperatures ranging from 76-91 degrees. August is the warmest month. Humidity levels tend to be high throughout the entire summer, but the weather is pleasant throughout the rest of the year. Memory care facilities have indoor and outdoor common areas to give residents the opportunity to enjoy comfortable weather and stay inside when the heat is oppressive.
  • Florida doesn’t have a state income tax, so seniors don’t pay any state taxes on retirement income, regardless of its source. This may offset higher living costs and help seniors and families pay for residential memory care services.
  • Broward County’s air quality is decent, with the American Lung Association assigning the county a C for ozone pollution, an A for 24-hour particle pollution and a passing score for annual particle pollution. This may benefit those with chronic cardiovascular or respiratory conditions.
