I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I can not state enough how awesome this facility is my mother has been at Charlwell for many years and she is very happy. Every time I visit, the staff are VERY friendly and professional. The food is so much better, they even put a flower on the plate. It's the little things that make this place home for my mom. I would tell everyone to send your loved ones to Charlwell house!

I visited this facility

I just wanted to say that we were all extremely nervous at first upon having to part with dad, but upon warm greetings and constant truthful reassurance alongside the continued heightened level of care, all our worries were put to rest and we're happy to know that dad is happy and in good hands.

There is Not enough help here especially after hours the system here is broken residents DO NOT get regular showers/wash ups/ baths. I don't even think they are suggested. the food is not good not hot and not nutritious..no physical activity. Most of the staff is helpful but maybe not friendly I think all activity happens before 4pm everyday as more and more rehabs close the choices are getting slimmer everyday

This is the worst place I have been to the staff always talking their own language making fun of us the food is the worst always cold the place is always dirty their mice running around everywhere the place is old outdated I would not recommend this place to even a dog

This facility is very old and needs to be redone. Several electrical issues. Equipment that’s dated. New administrators don’t seem prepared to handle a building in the shape. Poor infectious control.

I would like to thank the staff, caregivers and nurses for taking good care of my brother Robert F. who had Huntingtons disease. He was really happy there and that was his home. Thank you from the bottom of my heart .

My mother is a current resident. She is in her 90's and with the help of the staff, she beat Covid-19. The staff is doing their best in this difficult time when we are unable to go inside and hug our loved ones. Recently, we were able to visit on the porch in person with all the proper precautions - so wonderful. This is probably extra work for the staff but it is good for the residents and families. My mother is healthy and doing well. The staff gives us the information we need and calls back. The food is so-so and the place a bit run down but the staff is good.

The facility is immaculate, modern and the staff is beyond helpful. They truly treat residents like family. They care about the patients, families, and guardians. They keep the residents busy and entertained with activities and offer community breakfast monthly. This facility is truly amazing!

I’d give this facility zero stars if I could. Do not send your loved one here for any reason. Short term rehab or long term. Completely outdated facility in appearance and mentality of providing quality care to residents. They keep the family out as far away as possible, and don’t care to work on concerns. The staff are rude, unprofessional. You seem them on phones, watching tv, totally disengaged with residents. Lack of activity for residents. Feces in spaces, not sanitary, medication errors. They care only about the bottom line and money. These people aren’t fit to be working in healthcare.

My dad was a resident here from November, 2018 through April, 2019. The first thing I noticed when I walked in is it didn't have that urine smell that I have found most rehabs to have, it was very clean, I always saw staff cleaning the floors while I was there. I found the rooms to be more spacious than rooms at other rehabs. My dad was in Unit B and I found the staff on that unit very helpful and friendly, specifically Danielle (Nursing Supervisor) and Mary (Nurse). Thanks to their careful attention to my dad's medical condition, his life was saved a couple of times by sending him to the hospital immediately instead of being ignored like I had seen happen to him in previous rehabs, once he had been septic from an infection he had. There was one aide that my dad had issues with and I had discussed it with Danielle and that aide was not given to him again, they pay attention to their residents and their families. I can't really say much about the activities, my dad wasn't a big participator, but I always saw a calendar posted with what was going on on what days. The only negative I can mention is the food, I would bring my dad something whenever I visited. I would have no qualms about sending someone I love there again.

I must say I was a taken aback by the negative reviews of Charlwell. Of the many many times I have been there, only once did I detect a urine smell in the bathroom. I reported this right away, and it was immediately taken care of. I am amazed all the time, by the cleanliness. The staff is constantly cleaning, and I cannot imagine a tougher task, then keeping a nursing home smelling and looking as good as it does. The nursing staff has been exceptional in keeping me informed, and always answers questions courteously. From the receptionist at the front to the administrators of this facility, I say thank you for taking such good care of her.

One of my parents' is a current resident, one is a past resident, now deceased. Here are my experiences between 2009 and 2018): Billing: My experiences have been horrendous. Early on, I didn't receive bills, just crazy spreadsheets via email if I called to check on the balance. At the present time, I have been attempting to get the billing department to apply over $12,000 in payments. I realized this when I reviewed the payments portion of the bill . Charwell billing acknowledged that they received the payments (after my inquiry) and blamed it on "sloppy billing". However, it has been over 3 months and I still do not have a balance adjusted for the payments. I have spent hours trying to get this addressed and it is still unresolved as of October 2018. After numerous, unanswered calls from the Norwood, MA billing office, I contacted the "managing employee" listed on a search for Charwell ownership. She responded right away, agreed to review the details will the Norwood billing office, and never got back in touch with me to confirm my dad's balance. Personal grooming (residents): While I feel that the facility is clean, my dad is often unshaven, unwashed and without a haircut (noticed on weekend afternoon visits.). My father is not capable of personal care. I have repeatedly raised the issue that my dad used to take pride in his appearance and that the staff needs to take the time to ensure that he is shaven and gets scheduled for a haircut. This has not been addressed properly. I recognize that working in a nursing home environment can be very challenging (I have worked in more than one myself), but my expectations for proper billing and personal care for my father represent basic expectations.

Completely disgusting smelly and dirty. I needed to use the bathroom and there was feces all over the bathroom and toilet paper holder In my grandmothers room. It is real sad that I do not even want to visit because it is such a upsetting experience. I am going tomorrow we will see what surprises I run into. The nurses are rude and do not want to be bothered.

I was visiting my friends mom at the Charwell House. I was greeted by the smell of urine upon entering. The receptionist was very friendly. I cannot rate the staff because the receptionist was friendly, however, I witnessed a woman named Carol (I think she was some sort of supervisor) reprimanding an employee in front of me which was very unprofessional. There is a time and place for those types of conversations and apparently this woman has no class or clue.

My mom was a resident at Charlwell House from Nov. 2016 up until the time she passed, Feb. 2017. She had terminal cancer. If you're looking for a modern facility, Charlwell isn't it. But if you're looking for a facility that has the best care by the most caring/loving staff, and a clean facility, Charlwell is the place. The staff are angels. It gave me and my extremely large family peace of mind knowing that our precious mom was in such good hands. I'm getting emotional as I write this because I will always have a special place in my heart for Charlwell. I will always be indebted to them for taking such wonderful care of my beautiful mom, my best friend. Thank you

I am a current resident who was greeted warmly and treated like I was at home for the last two years. The environment is clean and the staff is attentive, very caring and treat me wonderful like family. I have no complaints and would recommend Charlwell House to friends and family.

I have worked in many nursing homes over the years, and Charlwell house is by far the worst. The staff is uncaring and extremely rude. They do not take family concerns seriously and seem to be annoyed at the simplest of questions or requests. Personal items go "missing" constantly. The smell of urine is overwhelming and is constant, and the place is generally unclean. How this place gets accredited by the State is beyond me.

Smelliest nursing home I've ever been in. I visited my relative 3 x over the last month and each time it has a very strong smell of urine throughout the facility. Second issue was the cna taking care of my relative never spoke to him and barely looked interested in doing his job.

I visited this facility

Visited a relative that just starting living at Charlwell House. The facility is depressing and smells of urine. Totally disgusting public restrooms. One was out-of-order and the other was a disgrace. The floor was sticky with urine and the urine odor was so intense that it was a serious health code violation.

My mother has lived in Charwell House for a week. She’s seen the occupational therapist. They’re trying to help her, and I think they’re doing a pretty decent job. They serve three meals a day with snacks in-between.

I visited this facility

I never write reviews about places. But I feel as though I would have wished someone had told me before I sent my mom to this place. The place is absolutely terrible. The nursing staff was not friendly or caring AT ALL!!! when you choose to work in a place such as this, you need to come to work and be understanding that most of these people are here because they need help and cannot do things themselves. However, my mom was pretty able to do things herself. But the people were rude, they never once checked on my mother when I would visit her, they did not care whether or not she was eating or drinking. They absolutely did not give her the care and attention that she needs. Do yourself a favor and do not send your loved ones here. It is one of the worst places I have seen in a long long. she was unfortunately sent to the hospital under their care, and not one person notified me about it. This is what really set me off the edge about this place when I went to visit with my mother and ask them why I was not informed. The nurse VERY RUDLEY told me she does not have to inform me about these things. She said she has no obligation. Didn't say sorry, express her concerns. Nothing! She was so rude to me when I walked into that door and found out that my mother was going to the hospital. absolutely disgusted with this place. Honestly, I would not send your loved ones here if you want them to be taken care of.

I visited this facility

Charlwell House is a lovely facility. You walk in the doors and instantly feel comfortable. It has a nice homey feel and I could definitely see my loved one happy there. The staff all seemed pleasant, I was greeted with smiles by everyone. The Admissions Director and the Director of Nurses took the time to show me around. The rooms are mostly semi private, the dining area was large and set up formally. I was able to meet with the rehab team as well, they had a good sized gym, and all seemed very knowledgeable. They showed me their new equipment which seemed very high tech. They were very clean, there was no odor when entering, the hallways were clear, and they have beautiful wood floors on each unit!!

I visited this facility

Charwell House looked like a nice place. I could see my wife would be comfortable there. It was a typical nursing home. It had single and shared rooms. They looked clean. Their medical staff looked OK. The atmosphere looked OK. The one thing I was looking for was PT for my wife, and I didn't sense that they had a PT area. I was looking for equipment, and I didn't see that. I saw some equipment there; however, other places had better equipment for physical training.

My grandmother was a resident of the Charwell House until her recent death. I personally thought the place was awful & never wanted her there. I found the staff at Charwell House in Norwood, MA to be uncaring and inattentive. When patients needed to use the bathroom it could be 20 minutes or more before they respond. At that point it's too late. When they would show up they acted like they were put out. When I was there I assisted my grandmother myself. It smelled on more than one occasion and was outdated. The staff did not want to be bothered to have to respond to alarms or check in on the fall risk or dementia patients so they park them in front of the nurses station to just stare into space for hours. One particular male nurse seemed to never want to be bothered with the patients needs. He was arrogant and sarcastic. There were not enough activities available. I feel the patients were not treated with the respect and dignity they deserve while I was present so I can only imagine what it's like for patients that don't have family regularly present as my grandmother did. My grandmothers recent death was the result of the staff not being attentive to her sudden decline in health. The family was very concerned with her condition and they all at different times over the course of 48 hours made it clear they thought she needed immediate medical attention. One nurse would not even hear my Aunts concerns because her shift was almost over. The others were too busy watching TV to be bothered! Everyone was told not to worry that it was not serious. When it became very clear it was serious it was too late. She passed away before reaching the hospital. None of the staff have once reached out to the family to offer their condolences and it's been several weeks. In my opinion they should be shut down under the current management and staff. It is very sad to see our elderly treated so poorly. I definitely do not recommend the charwell house and would give them negative stars if allowed!

Our family found a large number of the staff to be uncaring and unresponsive. Food was just left on the tray without covers taken off and the meat left whole for a patient that couldn't cut it for himself. It took the staff a long time to respond to alarms on fall risk patients. The staff was not good about checking to see if the patient needed to go to the bathroom or if they would like a drink. Hours would go by without anyone checking on my family member who had suffered a stroke and was a fall risk.

I visited this facility

I thought the older people were left alone a lot and should have had more personal attention. It seems sad that many of them are unable to move around, so they end up sitting in a wheel chair all day by themselves staring off into space. I hate the smell of the place because it smells like pee every time I have ever walked in. I thought the feeding services were okay, and the residents seemed to get enough food. I thought there could be more entertainment too, like games and movies and other interactive things. There were also times when my grandmothers' things had been taken because there is not a lot of privacy or security in the rooms. Residents are discouraged from, but not banned from walking into each others rooms and they sometimes leave with someone else's things. I also thought the staff should have known some of the residents better so that they could have taken care of them in a more personal manner.
