Disappointed Daughter

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

When my father was a resident I personally observed residents being heavily medicated so staff didn’t have to deal with their health issues, e.g., dementia. I had to constantly request to review my father’s medical records so he wasn’t given drugs without my knowledge and approval. Some of the staff were caring and kind, and some should work in a different field. Because of the owner’s actions, we had to move him to a different facility.

We went with Family Health & Rehabilitation Center. My wife is in total nursing care there. In the house that she's in, they have a nurse, some aides, and a couple of people that are in between. They're taking care of like 20 people in that house, people that are in skilled nursing and needing attention. Sometimes it's a wait when you push the button before they get there, but I think they do a pretty good job. I don't see any of them just sitting around. I think they're busy, but that's the big problem. The staff are very helpful. They're not grouchy or grumpy or anything. They're there to help you and they do a good job of it. The rooms there are very nice. For that type of service, there's probably some of the largest rooms of the places that I visited and looked at. My son and daughter-in-law, two grandkids, plus a few other people were in the room all at the same time, and it wasn't really crowded. It's pretty spacious. There's a refrigerator in each room and a nice bathroom with a roll-in shower. I have a niece that is an interior decorator, and she got pictures on the walls and stuff, so she got the room looking really nice. Every room has a window. The rooms are clean, and they have a nice little closet for my wife to have enough clothes that I don't have to do laundry once a week. They have pretty much the same type of food that most places have. It's not anything fancy, unless they're having a special occasion. They have like chicken and dumplings. I have tasted their meals because my wife never eats all of her meals, and so if I'm out there during a meal, I get about a half of what's on her plate. It's decent. It's very good food. It's nourishing and filling. For the ones that can't see well, they order something like a sandwich for almost every meal, because seeing food on the plate, getting it into a spoon, and getting it in your mouth sometimes is hard. If you don't want what they have on the special for the day, you can order about anything you want. For activities they just had a magic show this week. They do a lot of special activities for holidays and things. They put on their own fireworks show for the Fourth. They had steak dinner for the guys for Father's Day. They have entertainment, some of them are paid entertainment, and some of them are just people who want to come in and sing a few songs for them. Then they have crafts, and there were a bunch of ladies learning to crochet the other day. A couple of times a month they have a day where they'll take every color in the world of nail polish around and polish nails and things like that. They have a beauty shop there on campus where ladies can get your haircuts and get primped up a little. The facilities are excellent. They have nice common areas with a large television and all that stuff, and anything you want to do.

This is NOT the rehab center in which to place a family member. Meds dispensed were incorrect and had the potential of interfering with my brother's pacemaker. The pipes froze and burst leaving an ice flow covering the walkway to the center. The other entrance had snow-packed sidewalks and entry way that were left unshoveled. They touted two chefs per unit, but staffing shortages led to a single chef cooking for two units. Meals were sparse (a scoop of cold beans) and not eaten. Instead of two weeks of planned rehab, he received three days of chaos and discharged when his insurance ran out. What happened to rehab?

In over a week, my family member was helped to take ONE bath—promised 3/week. After, snow, sleet, rain & refreeze, the walkway to entrances were never cleaned. Dangerous for ANYONE. Transportation to a critical doctor appointment was denied. Was told if my loved one was going, I’d have to provide the transportation, which I did—over the treacherous walkway & parking. No help was offered. I’m in my 70’s, helping a late 80’s person—not the best situation. WAIT & WAIT to be allowed inside—door was broken. The patient asked for a switch for the bathroom heater many times. I finally found the maintenance person & got the switch, after 3-4 days. Window leaked air and caused the patient to feel chilled most of the time. The facility as a whole needs a good clean/paint/something. Food seemed decent. The patient felt that his PT was helpful. First line caregivers seemed caring & pleasant. The patient strongly asked to go home before the planned date. That happened. The room was large enough to accommodate visitors. Furnishings and plumbing fixtures are in a very used condition. They won an award, but I don’t know how.

Facility is profit motivated NOT patient rehabilitated. Father in there twice due to falls! Second fall happened two weeks after leaving the facility resulting in a broken hip! Facility discharged him without him even being able to stand up by himself! He had plenty of Medicare and Blue Cross Blue Shield coverage however this facility will only keep them for 20-day hundred percent pay period! It doesn't matter if the rehabilitated or not!

My dad was in Family Health & Rehab in Wichita back in September. I don't have anything good to say about it. I tasted some of dad's food there and it was horrible. It was not anything like what the website said, as far as some of the reviews that I looked at. It was not good at all. They accommodated the residents but as far as cleanliness, I would not know. The housekeeping was not there. The surroundings were not good. The entranceway to where the family could visit looked nice on the outside, but the inside did not meet the expectations of what I saw from the outside. They had Covid lockdown the first 14 days when my dad was there, so we didn't see him. He was pretty distraught because of how they were handling his therapy, they were rough. The nursing staff, he said, were nice, but as far as me trying to contact them, I could not get anyone to contact me. The staff liked him and he liked them, and that helped me, but I just was not pleased with how they responded to the family. They may have activities but I didn't see any in my dad's room.

My wife died a few days after being taken to the hospital from this facility. She was a resident there for over 50 days and never really got better. She told me about staff arguing between themselves how to treat her conditions and not following doctor protocols. Due to the virus, doors were locked and I was unable to follow my wife's treatment as I needed to and the case worker who called every so often was not much help. My wife's infections and health got worse while she stayed there and did contribute to her death. I had to convince the doctor treating her that she was not getting better and that she needed to be in the hospital, took more than one discussion to do so. By the time she was taken to the hospital, there were so many things wrong with her she could not recover and in just a few days, she died. I would not have chosen this place for my wife, but because of the pandemic, the decision was made for me by the hospital when she went to rehab.

$8,680/mo - $310/month rate inc every April 1st Medical equipment not repaired/replaced Very High Attrition at all levels so no continuity of care Food is now all pre-packaged and frozen, used to be freshly made RN's admittedly lost hearing aids twice & CNA's admitted to damaging twice in 9 month period Director said "I don't know why we keep losing your mother's hearing aids. We lose teeth but usually not hearing aids." Window leaked for 10 mos before fixed My mother's room flooded due to poor construction/insulation in entry way of bldg. Watch stolen as my mother slept from the back of her dresser drawer 1 week before she died, (Dir of Nursing authorized the facility to rembourse us for the watch.) Questionable medical care -RN's that don't document or report to next shift, CNA's that don't operate sit-to-stand equipment correctly risking injury to resident, call lights not answered promptly, Total failure of communication and follow thru by Dir of Nursing and his staff., Staff tends to blame others rather than resolve the problem, frequently short staffed, Problems too numerous to list.

this place was awful, my mother was treated very badly, she never got her meds on time, or proably not at all if a family member had not said some thing, her bedding was never changed for the time she was there, she did not get her meals on time, our mom was extremely unhappy there, and to top it all off on the day she was to check out they her 2 lasik at once saying that her kidneys can handle it, she is now back in the hospital after spending one bad day at home, so I will not even give one star

My Dad went there after hip surgery and he slowly was going down hill and I would have to tell his nurses everyday his symptoms they finally did blood work and his hemoglobin was really low so he had a transfusion and that evening he passes a blood stool the nurses aide was worried so she asked his reg nurse and she told her it was normal after a transfusion!!! I found out it is not normal after him continually declining but the nurses would say how much better he was doing! I finally called a friend that was a surgeon and told her what was going on and she had me get all his blood work results and after I told her them she said he needs to go to ER he is bleeding internally probably and definitely needs blood his hemoglobin was in the 5 range normal is 15. The surgeon here at the hospital said my friend saved my Dads life. Apparently the medical staff here is incompetent!!! My dad could of died at this place...

The quality of care if you can call it that is very minimal. My grandmother was there for 2 and a half days. They didn't weigh her daily as prescribed by the Dr. She needed this done to make sure her kidneys were functioning properly. She asked for depends and they didn't provide them for her then expected her to do physical therapy. She never received a bath. The phone was on the ground where she couldn't reach it. On top of all of this the food as well as the coffee were always cold and nearly inedible. I wouldn't wish this place on my worst enemy.

FHR is a wonderful place. Staff is super friendly and caring. My father-in-law has been there for several weeks. He LOVES to food and is very comfortable. No complaints at all.

The facilities are beautiful and clean. The staff is kind and helpful. The do tots and therapists on staff are knowledgable and patient. My father has bed. In several times and we have always been pleased. He had extended times of rehab. He was there flowing bypass surgery, later a fall and ultimately an infection that needed constant attention.

If your loved one is able to move and talk on their own, they may do okay at Family Health and Rehab. But if they can't talk or move, such as after a stroke, you better plan to be with them as much as possible. My mom is there right now and they forget to give her a bath, most of the nurses and aides are never on the same page and things get mixed up, takes them quite a while to answer call button, don't check on them nearly enough and no two people agree on how to put them from the bed to the wheelchair or vice-versa. Also the food leaves much to be desired! I would NEVER take my mom here again!

I visited this facility

This assisted living facility is one of the best in Wichita. My father and I were both pleased with the staff, the accommodations, and the professionalism of the doctor. The most interesting fact about this assisted living center is that all meals are homemade. The cook staff are not allowed to purchase any prepared, boxed, or packaged entrees, deserts, snacks or anything! It is my opinion that nutrition is key to a quality life and well-being. Another positive attribute about this assisted living facility is the decor and design of the resident rooms and common areas. The decor is a southwestern style in the colors; there are very bold blues, yellows, greens. The resident rooms have walk in showers that are convenient and safe to enter and exit. If you have a loved one needing a safe and outstanding assisted living facility, I highly recommend Family Health & Rehabilitation Center in Wichita. It is located on Maize Rd., just north of Highway 54.

I visited this facility

This is one of the newest skilled nursing and rehab centers on the west side of wichita. It is modeled on the "neighborhood" concept and "person-centered" care. The grounds and buildings are lovely The four units are identified as "houses" and each contains its own dining, living and kitchen areas. Each area has a large flat screen TV and a fireplace. Resident rooms are private, but can accommodate couples. Most rooms have a kitchenette so residents can store snacks, have tea or coffee and even entertain their guests. Staff is certified and professional and rehab is of highest priority. Dining is family style. This is a move in the right direction for eldercare, but still has some kinks to work out. While the ammenities are very nice and more personalized care is the goal, it still seems institutional to me. Check survey.
