I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My sister-in-law was a resident of Luther Manor Communities. The nurses have been very nice, and the nurses' aides were very nice to my sister-in-law even though she was younger than anybody else there. They really interacted with her. They made her do stuff; she was never one to get herself involved with people, but they forced her, which was a good thing from the family's perspective. We thought that was the best thing for her forcing her to interact with other people instead of her just being isolated. So, I have to say they did a wonderful job there. They offer a lot of things. Example, they have a Catholic mass there every week and they did rosary a couple of times a week. Now it's Covid and that's the big bad thing right now. I've never tried the food, but I've seen it when they delivered to my sister-in-law. For this place, you can order off of the menu just like in a restaurant and when she decided she wanted the soup and a hamburger they would make her. They also had the set meals that they would post every day. But if you didn't want that you could order, and they would prepare whatever you ask for. I was surprised that they offer that. My sister-in-law did not trust them doing her laundry because she swore they shrunk everything but actually she was probably gaining weight. I would do all of her laundry and they did a good job. Once in a while they'd put her things with their laundry, but I never told her, and she never knew the difference. They've always been very accommodating to me; they'd make sure her stuff is put in a special bag for me, that type of thing. The nursing area, most of the people there need more help because a lot of people need to walk on walkers or are on wheelchairs, so they offer a lot. Their common area is big where they have their dining room; their feeding area is very nice, and they have magazines. They have little canaries in this humongous sanctuary, and they have baby birds, and they have a nest where they're born. The older people love to check it out every day. They would have things for family days, quite a few times a year, like bratwursts for picnic, and the family will be invited, and that was good.

Nursing care is good. Restorative and activities are very good. There is a disconnect between administration and staff - I've heard conversations among unhappy staff. In the Memory unit, in my parent’s case, personal hygiene - basics like hydration, brushing teeth, combing hair, washing face, putting a bra on - just don't happen. Many (not all) of the staff seem to care more about their break time and gossip than taking care of patients. Actions are much more likely to happen when it's convenient for staff rather than patient. Judging by my parent's care, some CNAs here do not seem to understand basic dementia behavior and the nuances required to effectively and compassionately work with the patients. I realize my parent is not the staff's parent, but I don't think it's too much to ask for basic empathy and compassion, especially considering the expense of living there. I think that the standards bar has been getting lower over the last few years. This well regarded facility is not what it used to be.

I visited this facility

Luther Manor had a lot activities going on, they seemed to have people everywhere doing things, and I liked that part of it. It was modern and clean, it doesn’t smell, and it has all these little things like beauty shops and all that stuff that makes it easy for the patients.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

I moved my husband to Luther Manor. His room is adequate. So far, the staff is good. They're very accommodating. Regarding activities, they have music, exercises and bingo.

I visited this facility

Luther Manor was extremely depressing. It was not kept up well. They had one area for dementia patients which was not too bad, but I think you would have to be in pretty bad shape to be able to live there. The staff was fine. They did their job, and they were pleasant.

I felt the facility was very clean, and cheery. I felt the staff was kind and caring they always remembered me and called me by name when I came to visit. I know my grandmother received excellent care, and enjoyed her last years there surrounded by friendly faces and people who genuinely cared for her.
