We liked Ramsey Village. Jackie was extremely nice. One of the things I liked about the location was that if my loved one ran out of money, they could still do Title 19, and she wouldn't have to move locations to another community. One of the things we talked about was the number of people on staff who have multiple years experience there. She was there for 16 years and she spoke about the fact that she started working there when her grandpa had to find a place. Then there were some other people that she pointed out that had 14 or 15 years at the same location. So, there's not a lot of turnover. They had a one-bedroom and studios. Then I saw an Alzheimer unit that was much bigger. They're modest. You furnished them yourself, so you can decorate it. If there was one thing I could say that would be constructive is to make them brighter and don't make them dingy or dark. Just need a better lit; there's not a lot of sunlight. It had a hotel setting when you walked in the door. I thought that was really impressive. We got there at lunch time, and so there's different areas where people were eating. There were two dining areas that I recall that were completely full of residents. One area was for people primarily bound to a wheelchair type, and the other was more what I would call semi-independent living. Then on the way to the dining area, there were places where they could sit and watch movies or TV as a group, or an outer door courtyard. Then Jackie talked about activities in terms of places that they would typically go. They actually had an activity coming up where they were going somewhere. There was a dining facility restaurant near Drake University that a bunch of them were going to go to. I didn't really pay much attention to the maintenance, but there was an area in the lobby where there's big pillars, and at some point they probably had a chair up against it and some of the paint had rubbed off. If I was in their shoes, I would maintain that area. The rooms that I looked at were good. The hallways were clean. There's plenty of things on the walls for people to look at. The dining areas were spacious and those areas were well lit. They all seemed to have windows that let in a lot of light. It was clean.

My mother has moved into Ramsey Village. The employees there are very helpful and extremely friendly. They know all their residents and they treat them all with respect. They appear to have, and have so far after the first week, been able to provide her with the care, both physical and emotional, that she needed. The atmosphere is excellent. From the medical attention she gets from the nurses and the doctor, shower support, to the aides that assist in dining and nutrition, they've been excellent. They understand that there's a settling in period of time and that they work to make the transition from a home owner to a tenant in an assisted living facility. Her apartment is nice and comfortable. It has all the things she needs for assisted living. The roast chicken was delicious. They were a bargain at the five-star level.

We toured Ramsey Village. The tour was very nice. The staff were very helpful. I like that it's a continuing care facility in that they have independent, assisted, and skilled care, and the transition from one level to the next would be easy and seamless. The staff who toured with me was Mallory, and she was very welcoming and accommodating. She answered all our questions and made us feel at ease about our dad living there. The independent living apartments that they showed us were in the process of updating, and so they have all new paint and carpet, etc. It was nice and up-to-date. The one-bedroom they showed us was spacious. We tried the food there, and the food was very good. The dining area for the independent wasn't large. They have separate dining areas based on the level of care. They have an activity calendar. They have movie nights and other activities, but we didn't see any, and that wasn't our main concern at the moment.

Ramsey Village is a very good place. Mom has a small room, but that's not what caught my eye. It was what was going on outside the room. The caring staff and the people sit together and talk in the areas around the building. They had an Elvis impersonator come in yesterday afternoon and the week before that (since they're close to Drake University), they had students come in and meet or just converse with the residents. Mom is very social and we want to continue that stuff and give her that opportunity. The facility is a little bit older than I thought it was. I think the original building was built back in the 50s, but I would not have thought that at all. They did a very good job of keeping the building itself up to date and added modern things and just kept it very presentable. Nothing flashy, but it's homey, clean, and well-kept. I was there yesterday and the food wasn't anything fancy, but I think overall, it's good. Whatever their fee is, covers just about everything as opposed to a lot of places where you got your basic fee, and then as you need a little assistance every day, it costs much more. They didn't have that. That was all rolled into a very nice number.

Ramsey Village was a very pleasant place, but it felt like a nursing home. It was an older building and the neighborhood wasn't very nice. The staff was very friendly and very helpful. The rooms were OK, but kind of plain. They were not quite so cozy or homey. I went in the morning, so the residents were having coffee and donut time, which looked fun. I also noticed that their dining room was decorated and themed for October month, so it looked very festive and very fun.

My husband has been at Ramsey Village for about three weeks now and he seems to be doing OK there. Everybody there is very friendly and very helpful. We like working with the nurses and the staff in the office. It has a home-like atmosphere. I am not allowed in the dining room, so I have not tried their food, but my husband likes the food there. They have movie days where they watch movies and have popcorn. They take the residents out on trips. They'll do just about anything that you need help with.
