I visited this facility

We went to the Bloom at German Church. I liked everything. The lady that we talked to was very nice and very helpful. My sister thought the studio was too small, but I thought it was nice for what she needed. They showed us everything, the kitchen where you could cook for yourself if you wanted to, and the exercise room. She showed us the whole layout. It was very clean. I liked the whole tour that they gave us, and I couldn't mark them down for anything. Everybody was friendly. I didn't have any food there, but it smelled good. The outdoor area was very well kept and clean. It had a nice porch with all kinds of rockers sitting on it, which was nice.

The people at Bloom at German Church were very nice, and they seemed to have a lot of activities there. However, the ambiance of the place was different. They told me they were getting a new carpet, but the facility itself wasn't as nice as the other facility. I was impressed with the people there. They were very friendly. They would have been second on the list had I not seen the other place. The person that showed me around was very nice, very friendly, and answered all my questions. I don't have anything negative about the people there at all. They have a nice courtyard and they provide laundry as well.

Bloom at German Church was interesting. They were nice, but the lady didn't know much about the place, and it definitely needed some upkeep. They did not have any openings, so they must be doing something right because they were full. We met some residents and I thought that was a good thing. I spoke to them, and some have been there for quite some time. They got back to us several times to ask us if we were still interested, and that's a good thing, too. They had different floor plans compared to everybody else. They had more variety. We saw a two-bedroom unit with a little seating area outside. They just didn't have any closets. It had a lake/water nearby and the place was pretty.

We like Bloom at German Church. It seemed like a nice community. I like the personal connections, and it was a small community. They had a nice facility. It was close to where we're located on the east side, so the location was good. We saw the assisted living. The person who showed us around was very friendly and interested in our situation. The rooms were a good size. They had more of a full-size refrigerator and maybe a microwave in the room. They had a courtyard and they had flower boxes and things out there. It's located within a senior living community, so it felt kind of sheltered, and it was not right next to a street or anything, so it felt sequestered a little bit, away from the other traffic and all of that.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My brother is at Bloom at German Church. I found it out from other members of my family and church, several people that have been through it, and my mother knew the facility because she had visited the people that were in it. Driving past it, you don't even know it's a retirement facility. It looks like a very nice house. I worked with the people. They were very helpful with me in many ways. All the recommendations I got led me to that direction plus the real key is it's very close to my mother, so that I can pick her up and take her over to see my brother. The staff so far has been very great. I had a few little problems, but no major concerns. They've been very helpful. I've only seen pictures of his apartment. From what I've seen, it's small, but it's adequate for what he needs. He's got the full facility to walk in, to go out, and communicate with people and play chess. As far as his individual room, it's good. He's very happy. I've seen many improvements with him, his attitude, a lot of things have changed to good. He hasn't complained about the food. He has gained weight. He can barely talk, but everything I've gotten from him, he's very happy with it. They have checkers, chess, cards, a lot of different activities in that respect, and exercise bicycles. There's plenty for him to do. They've got a pool table and things he will never use, but other people will. The community is in a secluded area that when you drive up, it is very nice. The facility has been there for 50 years at least. I get a monthly newsletter, which I could also get on the computer. They've done very well.

I visited this facility

I visited Bloom at German Church back in July 2019 in search of a place for my grandmother. I met with the Site manager Anna several times regarding my grandmother and in Aug. we felt like we had finally settled on a place for my grandmother. Anna reached out to me the first week of Sept to let me know that the new studio apartments with a screened in porch would be ready at the end of September and she felt like my grandmother would be a good fit as well. Anna went out to meet my grandmother the first week in Sept. and also shared the news with her that she looked forward to seeing her soon when she moves in. Since then I have spoke to Anna twice and she promised me that James the director of nursing would like to go out to meet and assess my grandmother also. Both times Anna lied and we haven’t heard from Anna or James since. I’m really disheartened and appalled at the behavior of Anna and James. Bloom at German Church lacks professionalism, care and concern for others. After the lack of follow up and calling several times and leaving messages with no return calls I can’t imagine how the residents are being treated. I would not recommend.

Provider Response

Bloom Senior Living is a family owned and operated company that has been providing personalized service and premium care to seniors since 1965. Bloom at German Church has been in the Bloom Family since 2010 and has operated at nearly 100% occupancy - with a waiting list - for almost a decade with virtually no associate turn-over. It’s a warm, happy environment full of happy residents, families and associates (that our committed to our residents and Bloom’s aspirational mission of helping seniors flourish, bloom and discover their best selves). To satisfy the growing need for this environment, our extended wait list and Bloom at German Church’s unique programming/mission, Bloom at German Church recently completed a full remodel of the community, which included adding new patio units that will be ready soon. We are very sorry that we didn’t meet your expectations here and hope your grandmother has settled at her new community and met many new friends. Unfortunately, the new apartments – due to factors outside our control – will not ready to be leased until the end of October and upon assessment, we’re unable to meet the needs of your grandmother. We wish you the best and please consider us a resource in the future. Bloom

The Bloom at German Church was very homey, very small, and would be an alternative to somebody who didn't want a big facility. I wasn't impressed with what they had to offer, but the facility itself was different. If they want a small, intimate facility with fewer residents, that would be something to look at. They weren't quite right for me, but I could see why they may be right for someone, and I wasn't turned off by it. It was clean, simple, and modest, but it needed some updating.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My Mom has lived at Bloom for close to two months. She did not want to leave her home but could no longer live alone. It took her a little while to settle in, but she now talks about how nice it is; how friendly the staff and residents are; and how much she loves the food! ( I have eaten several meals there with her and it IS very tasty! She enjoys her room, the common areas and activities. And she looks better than she has in ages. The entire building is decorated beautifully. It’s a blessing that she no longer has to do laundry, cook, wash dishes, change her sheets or clean. She says she feels like she is on a vacation. I really have no words to express how much my entire family loves Bloom. I’m so grateful that my mother is there.

My wife stayed at Bloom at German Church for three weeks in a one-bedroom by herself. It's a nice, big, fancy place.

Bloom at German Church is a nice facility. It only has studios and I think one bedrooms. It is catered I think to memory care rather than assisted living. The people are very nice, it just isn't what I am looking for.

I completed the tour of Bloom at German Church, and it was good. The facility is well maintained, the staff was courteous, and I was happy with it as a place to find out more information. They don't offer garden homes, but they're better able to handle low income residents.

We went to Bloom at German Church, but they didn’t have any apartments open and did not know how long it would be available. The layout of the place was good, but they do not have any type of memory care, and my mother has memory issues, so going long-term would be a hard thing because eventually she will have to go into memory care. That was one of the drawbacks, but everything else was great.

Bloom at German Church was very nice and well kept up. The staff was very friendly. Everything seemed really nice over there. The residents seemed very pleasant and looked happy. They had a room where they could talk to each other, a pool table, a TV room, and areas where they could entertain their guests.

Bloom at German Church was a wonderful place. If they provided the service that my father needed, this would be the place to go. The staff was very pleasant, very helpful, and very professional. All around, they were very good. The apartments I was able to go into were very clean. They were occupied and seemed to be a great space, well-appointed, and plenty of room. They had a number of activity areas. They have an activity director and people guiding the residents, and there is something going on all the time.

Bloom at German Church was a nice facility and considerably smaller than the other one I visited. It had a smaller dining facility. The people there seemed to be very helpful. I liked the admissions person. It just seemed rather small, and I was not too sure that they could take care of mom in the way that she needed to be taken care of. They offered for me try the food, but I didn’t. I did meet the chef, and he seemed like a decent guy.

We want to go to a place called Autumn Glen (Bloom at German Church) because it is near us, and it is a senior living, so this is where we're looking. We're very happy with the place. This is the place we're impressed with, and we would like to try to get in there. They have duplexes and quads. They all have patios, some are larger than others. They have several different floor plans. Most of them are two-bedroom, two-bath, two-garage. We have talked to nice people. We think that would be a nice place to go to. What really impressed us was the cleanliness and friendliness. Everything is uniformed; all houses are to be uniformed. They are pretty strict, which is wonderful.

The place is very nice, but the rooms are too small. There are lots of activities at Bloom at German Church. It is very well furnished and very clean, and the staff is friendly. It is just too small. They do not accept Medicaid. The dining room is very nice. I don't know if they can do anything differently to improve since they cannot make their rooms larger. It is very nice, but they are limited by their physical setup, and you cannot change that situation.

I found the facility clean and bright with a friendly and caring staff upon initial visits. But, when my sister moved in, the care was sometimes less than adequate and timely. When my sister was sick and in bed the bedside meal tray was left for the entire day and nurses were often rude and short with us when doing her vital checks. The meals are often poor in nutrition and taste, which require our family to bring my sister frozen dinners, fresh fruit, green vegetables and healthy snacks. She is a diabetic, hypertensive and has low blood, therefore, adequate nutrition and frequency of meals are important. My sister had a hemmorraghic stroke and the intermittent arguing with staff is not good for her health and "senior-speak" is demeaning and disrespectful. The facility is clean, odorless and decorated nicely. Some of the meals are decent and some of the care staff is compassionate and patient with residents. I wish that all the staff would be more respectful, caring and considerate.
