Some of the staff are helpful but the new management is terrible. Huge increase in rent prices and less care for my dad.Very poor communication and you ask what all your loved ones money is going to. Extremely expensive for what they provide. Seems understaffed frequently. If the management promises you anything, get it in writing. Huge disappointment and I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone. Shop around. There are better places out there. I’m thankful we found one.

My mother has moved into Bickford of Crown Point. Location is one important factor for us, and it had both assisted and memory care, so their motto there is an age in place. We were hoping to move Mom somewhere and not have to move her somewhere else when her condition continues to be worse. They could accommodate both assisted living and memory care. The third criteria was the staff there, the level of care, and that they promote independence as much as possible. The facility is nice, new, and very homey. The level of activity and engagement with the residents, outings as well as internal activities keep her happy and enjoying the company of other residents. The other big seller is the food. They're great. They cook from scratch. It's freshly made to order. The food there is like going to a restaurant. It's wonderful. They do exercise classes, coloring, arts and crafts, and bingo. Those are the only ones I know of, but they have them frequently. Mom looks forward to doing whatever they've got. She's getting speech therapy and physical therapy there as well. I love Dr. Zack there. They have a van where they take them on outings outside of the facility, but we haven't done that yet.

We really liked Bickford of Crown Point. It was just very homey feeling. The set-up where residents can walk around, stop and rest, wasn't just a chair in a hallway. It was a homey gathering area that was here and there. As we walked around, we saw two different sessions going on, and everyone was involved. The room that we toured that we were interested in was the one-bedroom. It was basically a large room with a divider wall that separated it. It had a mini kitchenette so my aunt could try to keep herself independent. It had a sink and a microwave. If she wanted to use her own coffee pot, she could do that. The walk-in shower was great. There's a mini walk-in closet with plenty of room. She could have her own TV and her own phone in there. It's pretty much moving someone from their house into a smaller little area, and I liked that because the other one did not have a fridge, a TV, and no kitchenette. The staff was very thorough with asking about my aunt how she is, what she does, and where she came from medically and where she is today. We met the chef. She had been walking by towards the kitchen as we were in the dining area, and she stopped to say hello and explained how she makes things. It was really nice of her; she didn't just like continue on. They showed us the menu for the day, and everything was restaurant style. They would walk up to the patients and ask them on the menu what they would like to eat, so you're not going through an assembly line of picking food and placing it on a tray. Their choices are obviously nutritional, but if my aunt wants a piece of pie first, she can have the piece of pie first. It was clean. It was locked. I wasn't just buzzed in; somebody met me at the door. They had a little bistro area where you can go and get your little morning muffin. It's got like a little bistro counter and special little tables for that area. There's apples, oranges, and bananas sitting there that are available if you need that snack and stuff. Even in that area, I didn't see one dirty table. Walking around the different areas, even the room that we looked into, everything was all set up nice.

I was able to tour Bickford of Crown Point. I like the small size, from the standpoint that it's not so big that you feel like it's a giant organization. There's a lot of personal touches to it and it's all on one level, and because there's a smaller number of people, everybody seems to know each other very well. It just has a very homey feeling. I was looking at their assisted living for my dad, but they also have memory care there. Everybody was very friendly and very accommodating during my visit. I think the only thing that may have been missing there was a formal exercise area. But I understand that when it's assisted and memory care versus independent living, an exercise room or gym is less needed in that situation. They had a nice courtyard, they had a nice library, and they have a nice haircutting salon there that's very large and professional. They also have very nice meeting areas, which I would call more like lounging areas for the residents to sit and relax outside of their rooms.

We liked Bickford of Crown Point very much. When we first pulled up, we liked the aesthetics of the outside where it had a really nice apartment lobby kind of feel, with the house style and the greenery they had out there. Our first impression was, "Wow! This is nice." The rooms we saw were also nice and better than the apartment my grandma was in. The people that did the tour were all informative. My grandma was kind of finicky and they handled her and her questions well, so they were good. I was really impressed with the way the grounds looked, and I liked that they had good food on their menus and that they had activities where they actually got to make stuff. They had special things like actual programs for people that were dealing with the onsets of dementia, which was a huge selling point for us. It was an amazing place.

I toured Bickford of Crown Point. It was very nice. I liked it a lot. I told the lady there, when I'm 85, I'm checking in. You don't have to cook. You don't have to shop. You don't have to clean. I told my husband, 'I'm going in there with or without you.' I liked it a lot. They were having a birthday celebration for all the people that have birthdays that month. They had a coffee bar with some snacks and treats on it that people could share throughout the day, and all the people had gathered and they were having a birthday celebration and it was nice. The staff who accommodated me spent a very long time with me. She asked a lot of questions about my mother and her husband like their activities, what they'd like to do and what they don't like to do. They showed me their menu and their calendar of events was just amazing. There were a lot of activities there. A lot was going on throughout the day. The lady I spent time with was very helpful. The upkeep was very nice. They had a nice common area. The lady said the room is just for them to sleep in. They want them to interact and spend time. So there was a nice area for them to watch TV and a nice courtyard. Some people even had little gardens outside. It was nice. I like it.
