Assisted Living Reviews for ManorCare Assisted Living of Summer Trace

I am a friend or relative of a resident

Manor Care at Summer Trace is fine. They have activities, and their apartments are OK. It is also a thousand dollars cheaper than any other place. My father-in-law feels comfortable there. The staff is very great. They have been very helpful. He is kind of a handful, and they really a did a good job taking care of him. I haven't tried the food, but it looks OK.They have a plate ready for what the option is, and it looks pretty good. He says it is OK, but he is not really satisfied that much.

I visited this facility

Someone at ManorCare Assisted Living of Summer Trace gave us a complete tour of the independent living facility. It was an older facility. They didn't have any cottages just purely apartment-type. They had single-, double- and triple-bedroom apartments. We were interested mostly at the two-bedroom units for my mother-in-law. Their kitchen areas were well maintained and modernized. Their staff seemed very friendly. At Summer Trace, they had a system where they have a daily procedure to check on the welfare of the residents, keeping an eye on them, if they are mingling, etc., especially those with health issues. We also ate some lunch there and the food was good though they could improve on it more.

I visited this facility

This facility is not as expansive in some of their amenities as other places in Seattle. The fitness room is small, and the group activities are relatively limited. The structure is basic, with limited room for strolling or gardening. HOWEVER, it is located in the heart of Phinney Ridge, which has to be one of the most adorable neighborhoods I have visited in Seattle. I visited several times with my dad, and he was very impressed with the quality of the local coffee shops, a chocolate drink specialist(!), and good food offerings. There is also a Safeway outside of walking distance for my dad, but easily accessible by the number 5 bus one block away. That same bus leads to Fremont. Norse Homes advertises a "Scandinavian Hospitality", which seems to mean that the staff is a bit more hands off than other locations. My dad prefers this style, as he would rather maintain privacy and ask for extra attention when needed. However, some people may prefer more constant care. Several residents commented that the food was delicious. A group of residents make regular visits to Greenlake, which is one of the most beautiful natural features in North Seattle. It is located nearby, but, unfortunately, the elevation changes make it difficult for older adults to walk to the location. When I began looking for Seattle locations for my dad, I focused on central Seattle for its cultural offerings. North Seattle, particularly the Ballard/Fremont/Phinney neighborhoods, have changed my focus. These areas combine culture with natural beauty and local character.

The rehabilitation aspect of this facility is excellent, as long as you have your faculties, awareness, and can fend for yourself. If not, the patient is left in wheelchairs unattended with no alarm system to keep them safe if they decide to get up and stand. There are no alarms on the beds or even rails to keep someone from falling out. The beds do raise and lower and pads can be put on the sides of the bed to cushion a fall. My 84 year old father, with Alzheimer's, fell out of bed several times and from the wheelchair two times within a month; on two of those occasions the facility called an ambulance to take him to ER at a nearby hospital. Fortunately, he had no breaks or fractures; he had stitches, hematomas, and broken glasses. The food at the facility is excellent, as are the OT and PT personnel. The nursing side is lacking and undoes the great strides the patient makes in rehab.
