I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My parents moved into a lovely 2 bedroom apartment 4 years ago and have enjoyed the amenities of The Admiral at the Lake. The food is excellent, the staff are wonderful and the other residents are truly amazing people who have had significant impact in their careers and are continuing to be engaged in their many communities. There are activities of interest to ANYone, excellent exercise facilities, access to good doctors and great connections with the outside community. The staff were amazingly supportive and helped us made a difficult decision to move mom to the Harbors (the Skilled Nursing area). Mom has been very well cared for and kept safe during the pandemic. Of course separation during Covid was very difficult, but we were able to zoom at least 2-4 times a week and staff were very accommodating. I highly recommend the Admiral at the Lake for anyone seeking a wonderful community for graceful aging.

Other

Not a good place. My mother lived here for three years. Things were ok in independent living but when she began to slip cognitively and they became “concerned,” things got worse. I don’t think they knew what to do with a resident who wasn’t sedentary. In my opinion they weren’t adequately staffed or trained. I tried to work proactively with the staff but it was a frustrating waste of time and I usually only heard from them when it was bad news. Then they blindsided me with her expulsion and I had to scramble to relocate her during COVID. Their board of directors didn’t take any meaningful action when I shared our experience. The Admiral staff and even a few board members are now posting misleading positive reviews of the community on other sites without disclosing their affiliation, which says a lot about their lack of shame, honesty and character. I hugely regret convincing my mom to move to this place. I sincerely hope no other family experiences what we did. No one deserves to be treated the way my mom was.

I am/was a resident of this facility

My parents were residents of the "old" Admiral. When the new replacement facility opened in 2012, I was among the first to move in. The apartments are beautiful. Most - but not all- have balconies. There are over thirty different floor plans. Each unit has its own washer and dryer. Stove, fridge, dishwasher, disposal and microwave included. Free wi-fi. Attached parking. Expensive move-in fee, much of which is refundable to resident's estate. Monthly fees include continental breakfast every day, plus theoretically one meal per day. A lot of flexibility in how you spend your meal allowance, however...so in reality you can plan easily to allocate it to cover more meals. Additional meals billed to you with your assessments, at a reasonable rate. Great people, attentive staff, wide variety of programs. Extensive library; pool; fitness center and instructors; art studio, theater. Chorus, Play-reading groups, trips, gardening, movies, life-long-learning, bridge, woodshop and more. Activities are planned by residents, so many interests are accommodated.

I visited this facility

The Admiral at the Lake is very upscale. I am going to be 75, and I have money, but I don’t have the money to get into the Admiral. A 1-bedroom is half a million, and it is spacious and everything. I think the people who got the bargain were the ones who came in on the ground floor when they were just building it. For the rest of us, who had come in 5 or 6 years later, it is beyond my financial ability to go in. It is very well-maintained, very crisp and clean, and everything goes at right angles. If you can afford it, it is like a Rolls Royce.

I visited this facility

We like The Admiral, and we thought that was a good place -- lots of light and very pretty facility. It had just about everything with the other facility, but the other facility's location was better for us. The food was very good, and there were plenty of activities. The residents all seemed very happy, and the staff seemed very professional, friendly, and competent.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My mom is at The Admiral at the Lake. It is very good. What I like about it is that it doesn't have the 'nursing home' feel to it. It is more of a residential place even though my mom is in a skilled nursing. They have very good staff. The food is outstanding. The whole setup is actually the best.

I thought The Admiral at the Lake was wonderful and beautiful, but it was too costly for me. The staff was tremendous. I loved this place, but I just couldn’t afford it. It was like a lovely hotel. They offered everything from shopping to trips to the opera and symphony. It really was wonderful.

The Admiral seemed like a nice place, right by a lake, but very expensive. The room is gorgeous, ample, and very well-equipped. They have all kinds of activities for the people there so they can stay busy. They even have their own bus.

Admiral at the Lake is an expensive place. I have a very dear friend that lives there, and I didn't care for that one. I did not like the layout of the apartments, and every apartment has at least one balcony. Some of the apartments have three balconies, and that was really important to my friend, but I don't care for balconies. They offer a lot of activities, but my friend is not one for a lot of activities.

The Admiral is a little cheaper, and the apartments are a little bigger. The people at the Admiral are friendly. They have immediate access to the lake front which is something we would enjoy. They have a very nice group of current residents. They also have a lot of activities going on there. I had dinner there. They have a vegetarian entrée every meal which is very convenient for us. The staff seemed to be enjoying themselves too. It seems to be a very pleasant atmosphere, but we just wanted a continuing care facility.

The Admiral is in a great location in Chicago. It’s expensive because of the location. It was beautiful and new. They have everything, the amenities were unbelievable. I was also there for a program they’re offering to the public. They’re very nice.

The Admiral was a brand new facility. They're continuing care facilities wherein you can move from independent living to assisted living, etc. However, you have to pay a huge deposit and then you still have to pay your monthly payment. That's not affordable to middle-income people like me.

I visited this facility

We found ourselves checking out the The Admiral at the Lake facility to find a place for our uncle to live. He has mild dementia and limited ambulatory ability, so we really needed to find a place that could accommodate that. Everyone at the facility was very friendly. The entire place was clean and well maintained. We could see by the staff that our uncle's needs could be met there; they were all very caring and kind. Each person seemed to really like their job, which is very important to us. The fabulous location is very near the lake, and our uncle really likes that. We will all be able to visit our uncle easily here, which is also an important bonus. There is plenty of entertainment and we could see that the staff and residents enjoyed interacting with each other during various board games. There is also a lot of outside visiting to art museums, book events and other stimulating cultural activities. We were served food that could easily be mistaken for that served in a five star restaurant; it was that good. The thing that really stood out about this facility was its spacious layout. The rooms and apartments were all equipped with the latest technology, but still had a homey feel. The views of Lake Michigan were truly gorgeous. The many amenities, including their onsite health and wellness program seems first rate. The overall lifestyle of this facility were truly remarkable. In fact, we were commenting that WE would like to live there!

I am a friend or relative of resident

I try to visit all my friends and family members who reside in homes as much as possible. I dropped in last week to see a friend who just loves seeing me. After having had some lunch with my family, I went to see him. He was in the middle of a bath so I waited in the hallway. The staff was kind to him which is always nice to see. Shortly after, we hung out and watched some television. We usually enjoy watching our favorite TV shows together. A staff member came in and asked if everything was okay. She seemed quite attentive. After about a couple of hours, I left. But I went back the next day.
