I visited this facility
Brookdale Castle Hills seemed nice, the building was a little older, not quite as nice as some of the others, but I liked the neighborhood, because it was tucked away. I toured around, and the lady that I toured with was pretty nice, she talked to me, and we sat down. The staff was great, very nice, asked a bunch of questions, and seemed to really care to see if it was a right fit for us. It was pretty homey.

We were treated very pleasantly at Brookdale Castle Hills. It's an older facility, but it appeared well maintained and clean. Everything was in order. The room that they showed us was a little small, but it appeared OK. They didn't really have an activity room. Everything seemed to be done in their dining hall. Everything was an upgrade, as far as making sure that they're getting their medications on a daily basis and things like that. They had outside areas, a little exercise room, and a beauty shop. The overall appearance of the place was nice. The dining room was comfortable. It wasn't huge, but it was a little cozier than a cafeteria.

I visited Brookdale Castle Hills. The rooms looked OK, but the atmosphere was kind of depressing when you walk through the door. They were doing puzzles, but nobody seemed happy like in the other community I visited. It was kind of a mixed up mess when we got there because the person we were supposed to meet wasn't there yet, so someone had to fill in for him. The dining area looked OK, and the outdoors looked clean and nice. The staff seemed kind of confused and didn't know who was supposed to do what.

I didn't like Brookdale Castle Hills. The person I had set an appointment with wasn't there; however, a nurse took me around. He was great. The rooms were big, but I didn't like the place overall. It had more of a hospital feel and wasn't that bright and cheery.

My Mom is very happy at Brookdale Castle Hills. The staff if very friendly and caring. They always greet everyone with a smile. The facility is kept very neat and clean. They have a wonderful chef on staff who makes great food.. I have always been impressed with the very home like feel to the community.

My uncle is in Brookdale Castle Hills. With our experience, it is very economical. They care and they are family-oriented. They work with him on things that mean a little bit more to him. They reach out in trying to do everything for Tom. He has real bad dementia and it has been an excellent place for him. Even the maintenance man goes in and talks to him and they call him master sergeant and checks on him. If he doesn’t go to eat, they make sure they come and get him to eat. We spend a lot of time there and we like what we see not only with Tom but with everybody. I can’t recommend it highly enough.
We’re very happy with it and he’s very happy being there. We have him in a nice size studio and a real nice bathroom and shower. He just has to walk out his door, take a right turn and take a few steps down the hall and he is where he eats. It’s very nice, very clean, and very taken care of.
They have bingo and they have their shopping days. They have their card-making days and they have little concerts and all sorts of things going on. He eats 3 huge meals a day and we have eaten with him a lot. They let us go and eat whenever we want and the food is really good. They get a choice of their meals; they have a menu of several items that you can get.
You walk in and there’s a big, beautiful fish tank and a fireplace and then if you look to the right, it’s a real nice dining area. The halls are set up really nice because the people there almost go in a circle. Down the halls, there are little sitting areas and then off of some of those halls, there are little places out in the little courtyards. It’s very intimate and very nice but not overwhelming at all.

Emeritus at Summer Wind (Currently Brookdale Castle HIlls) was not responsive in returning phone calls. I believe the rooms were smaller. It was an older facility, but they were doing some upgrades to it.

We moved my dad to Summer Wind (Emeritus at Summer Wind) about a month ago. We chose them because they are the only one that fits our budget. As far as I can tell, everything is fine. They are doing everything that they say they will do. It is a very nice place. It is clean. The people that are there -- both the staff and the other tenants -- seem happy so I will give it a good grade in that respect. When I ask a question, I always get a smile and a quick answer. I always see the actual people that deal with him. The office people are very friendly. He is in a shared room. I will say it is very small, which is probably why we are able to afford this place. His actual half of his room I will say is the same size as a college dorm. He does not participate in the activities, but I do know they have religious meetings, bingo, and every morning a person gives a lecture to whoever wants to show up and listen. They have music where someone will come and play. They have an exercise class, and they also have tables set up for puzzles and what not.
All of the nice stuff are like behind the building where they can go out and be in a location where they cannot escape. It has nice benches and trees. At the last place that he was in, he complained constantly about the food. I have not heard a single complaint at this place about the food. I will rate it as very good.

Emeritus at Summer Wind wasn't appealing to me because they seemed a bit scattered all the time, and nobody knows what they were supposed to be doing. They were friendly, but it just seemed like there was so much going on all the time, so when someone needed something, they had to wait for a while. They need to have more people on their staff.

I used to work in long-term care and I had the feeling of that kind of environment when I went into the dining room at Emeritus at Summer Wind. People were just sitting there and eating their meals, something they had to do to get it over with. Also, the people appeared older, quite a bit older than me. They did have a few independent living rooms but it just wasn't the atmosphere that I was looking for. However, the staff was very nice and very accommodating.

I moved my sister to Emeritus last July 9th. The staff was very friendly and easy to work with. She was able to get a one-bedroom apartment -- they only have a few of those, so she was able to get a bigger room, which I appreciated. Most units are studio deluxe apartments. They have religious activities and outings every so often to visit some place. They have the usual Bingo as well as arts and crafts.

Emeritus at Summer Wind seemed very clean. I was impressed with this facility. The people there were very friendly and very informative. They gave me a lot of good information. They did a very nice tour and explained everything about it and how it works. They also gave me a cost breakdown. They all provided it in a very friendly way. They had basically kind of like a large bedroom with a bathroom and a little sitting area. Some of their apartments did have a small sink and a small kitchenette. However, the facility wasn't what I needed for my parents.

The staff, as far as the tour went, was excellent, but I wasn't a big fan of Summer Wind. My mother wanted to be there because she's familiar with the neighborhood, and it's right across the street from her church. The rooms are adequate, and they appear to be clean. The food is institutional. Since Mom has been there, the staff have been helpful and friendly. But it probably wouldn't have been the facility that I would have selected.

I visited Emeritus and I don't think it was very clean. Everything seemed very cluttered and there were a lot of stuff around, which was the biggest turn-off about the place. They had open doors where you could see residents inside. It could use updating. However, the staff was very nice, friendly and accommodating though not as enthusiastic as in some other places. Everybody seemed clean and in good spirits.

Summerwind staff was warm and encouraging when evaluating it as a home for Dad. As a Medicaid patient, Dad's accommodations were limited due to restricted funding. That we understood and expected. However, the room he shared was disproportionately divided in favor of the incumbent resident and staff was reluctant to adjust the partition to even out the space. Additionally, staff goes along with an unwritten policy that is driven by residents to enable residents to develop and support cliques. At more than one occasion, when Dad tried to sit at a new table to meet new people both residents and staff asked him to find another seat as the table he initially chose was "designated" for another resident. My suggestion is staff work with residents -- current and incoming -- to devise a more welcoming atmosphere. Social involvement is critical for individuals at this stage of life and we were left with the feeling that administration overlooked unspoken segregation because of anticipated objections by those who had been with the facility for some time. Bottom line: for the first few months Dad found himself sitting alone at meal times.

Summer Wind was a very nice, clean and fresh place. It was close to us. The people are very friendly and helpful. My husband got a shared room for his mom there because she's in Medicaid. My husband said the food is good and mom-in-law likes the food there too. There's a hair-cutting facility there and they take the residents to stores and restaurants. Overall it's very nice.

Food is awful looking, mushy greasy, and nothing fresh. I tasted it. Staff pleasant but quite incompetent, unable to keep records well of residents or give reliable information to outside services. ie doctor ordered physical therapy. Communication between services and departments there are poor to non existent. Laundry ruins and looses clothes even if they are labeled. Is clean looking when you walk in, but resident room was dusty on the dresser and bookcase and appeared to not have been dusted in several weeks.
Definitely would not recommend this place to anyone who cares about their family member.

Nutrition is an issue at this facility. Few home-made soups and few fresh fruits and vegetables are served at meal time.
