I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

We decided to keep my mother at Brookdale Phillippi Creek and she's doing well. The last time that we had used their services, we were not satisfied. And this time, they have a whole new staff, and it seems to be working well now. I do like the new administrator. I think he's done a really good job of turning the situations around. I like the fact that Brookdale is a huge community as far as other locations. I feel like my mom is being much better cared for. I think the staff has much improved from where it had been. The food has gotten better. They hired a new person for the kitchen and a new dining supervisor. It is an older facility, but it appears to be structurally sound. I think they could do better at cleaning.

Brookdale Phillippi Creek was a good one. We liked it. They gave us an apple pie and it was very nice. It was good. They gave us a box. They even gave us a pie cutter and some paper plates. It's a nice little gift set. They were very nice. They had a nice little courtyard. The facility wasn't as big as the others, but it was still nice. They had a very good activity there. The lady that did the activity was super nice and they're the ones that were telling us that when it comes to the meals, they try to get the people to come out, to go to the cafeteria, and to eat. They don't encourage them to eat in the room. They want them to be social, which was a very nice thing to hear. There was a gentleman there who tried to find things for them to do, like creating something. Sometimes the residents suggest what they would like to do. So, they seem to listen to the people.

Caring for elderly people is very difficult emotionally and physically. They helped us make the hard decision with our mom. The transition was smooth and as they gotten to know her, they have given her dignity and shown her kindness.

My father has moved into Brookdale Phillippi Creek. He's in the memory care unit. I am pleased with it. It seems like they're doing a lot for Dad, whether it be medication-wise or just the care that he's receiving. I liked what they were offering him. They were able to control his behavior with medications. It's a pretty good facility. There are no complaints about the cleanliness part of it. The food I saw was pretty good. I was only there for like a meal or two. I was pretty pleased with the facility. With the staff and the care that they get, I would refer them to anyone that was looking for a memory care unit.

Brookdale Phillippi Creek was nice. It didn't smell. The negative part about it is that it could use a little cleaning. The rugs were old. The staff was nice. I talked to some of the residents there, and they were very nice. The dining area and little recreation areas looked great. The rooms were fine and nice in size. I saw the studio and the one bedroom. The facility could use a little bit of upgrading. They had a salon but no gym. They had a card room.

My mother was at Brookdale Phillippi Creek. I wasn't overly impressed. There was lack of attention to detail. The director seemed to take no responsibility for anything. The head nurse seemed to take no responsibility for anything. There was just an overall lack of concern for the community members in my opinion. There were stains on the carpet, open electrical junction boxes, etc; that would be another complaint. Value for money was fair.

Brookdale Phillippi Creek was very close to my house. I thought it was very corporate. The people were not engaged with us. They were not engaged with the residents. It just felt like you were a number checked off the box. The place had carpet and the carpet was dirty. I just don't like it because it just seemed like that could be a place to gather dirt and dust. We're dealing with COVID right now. When we went in Brookdale, we should be masked and have distance between ourselves and the people. All these facilities take our temperature when you go in. Brookdale was the only one that actually came in physical contact with me. They used a temperature thing that they stuck in my ear, which means that the individual who's taking my temperature is getting very close to me. It was the only place that did that; every other place had a thermometer that was done at a distance. It really kind of bugs me about Brookdale, but it was the most affordable.

We appreciate you taking the time to visit and are sorry to hear you feel this way. We would welcome an opportunity to discuss with you further and encourage you to reach out to our management team.

I can't say enough good things about Brookdale Phillipi and the care and concern Ms. Kibbey has continued to show. She made what we thought would be a very difficult decision, simple. We're at peace knowing we chose the very best! Our interactions with staff have been amazing, and the community offers all the amenities you can ask for. The rooms are actually very impressive and welcoming, so we're very happy about that too! We highly recommend this community.

I am/was a resident of this facility

I stayed here for respite care for two weeks while my family went on vacation. They made it clear that they wanted me to settle in and have a happy stay. The activities director was especially attentive and helpful, really went out of her way. Maintenance guy came by several times in the first days to make sure the room was accessible to my disability. The food was accommodating of dietary issues and mostly pretty good! Rooms are nice, and housekeeping/laundry once a week went smoothly--nice clean room, no lost laundry. The caregiving staff were kind and helpful. I was uncertain what assisted living would be like and brookdale was a pleasant surprise.

My parents have lived at this community since it's renovation last year. The staff has always been very caring and attentive. Things are not perfect, but they certainly try to meet their needs.

We have got my mom in Brookdale Philippi Creek. We haven’t moved her in yet, but from what we saw in our visit, the community is very good. They showed us the 1-bedroom and then the 2-room, which were just right for the elderly. We saw the arts and crafts room, the theater room, and the little café. We saw it all, and it was very good. The people who work there were very caring and very upbeat. The folks, who live there and we talked to were really good. We conversed with 1 or 2 of them, and they already made my mom feel comfortable, making her feel like she is going to be welcomed when she moves in.

We dropped by to see this community a few weeks ago. We did not chose this particular Brookdale assisted living because we wanted bigger space for my husband and I. But the really nice lady who runs the place was very compassionate and knew what she was talking about. I didn't feel like she was just selling to fill her building. The place was warm and inviting from the moment I walked in the door. There were no odors on my visit and the residents looked clean and well cared for. If it had been just me, I would have moved in, but the space was too tight for two of us in the beautiful one bedroom I was shown. I would definitely recommend this community. We currently reside at another Brookdale place.

It was horrible and smelled like pee. The people were just sitting in their wheelchairs -- waiting to go into the dining room -- and they couldn't even go into the dining room. They were in the lobby, and they had to wait to go into the dining room. It just didn't have a good feel to it. I don't know why they wouldn't let them go into the dining room. Brookdale was not nice. We looked at it, we checked it out, and we left right away because we had a terrible feeling about it. We didn't even get into the rooms. Just the entry way, the smell, and everybody hanging around -- it just did not give you a good feel.

I would consider Brookdale Phillippi Creek for my father. They had a very nice director. She was excellent. She spent a lot of time with me. She just was a very compassionate person. She showed me the room. The room was OK. The outside area was nice.

What I wasn't impressed about Emeritus at Sarasota was that when I asked questions, they didn't have any answers. They were taking me on a tour of the facility and we were approaching where they had the dining area -- the major dining room -- there was this huge leak from the roof, and there was water all over the floor. Nobody was cleaning it up, and there wasn't any kind of marker -- nothing in there. Those were all seniors, and a lot of people had already gathered or were sitting and waiting to go into the dining room, and this water was almost at their ankles. I don't care what they do to fix it up, but that kind of showed a lack of attention. To me, it showed this was not the place that I would want to continue dealing with. I would never consider bringing my relative there because that to me is a lack of maintenance or paying attention. The staff was very nice, but they said they were in transition, so they didn't really have a lot of answers, but I didn't feel that it was a good enough excuse. There are people who are still living there, so you need to know what is going on every single day. If I was living there and the place was bought by another company because it was falling apart, it says that they were going to be fixing it, fine. But each day whoever is working there should be on top of what was going on, and if you wouldn't have the answers for me every day about what was going on, then that is not a place that I would recommend to anyone.

Provider Response

Thank you for taking the time to visit and share your concerns. We are sorry the community did not meet your expectations. We are committed to continuous quality care and will share your feedback with our maintenance team to address the issues you have raised to ensure the safety and happiness of our residents and their guests.

Speaking the truth

I was shocked when I realized the poor level of care given to residents of the DCU at Emeritus Swift Road. Staff to patient ratio was often 1:11, residents went largely unsupervised but for scheduled activity periods and meal times. They were often allowed to roam into others' room, and I once found someone in the bed of my husband, who was then a resident (until we brought him home). Residents were overly medicated, food was terrible (certainly not the "restaurant style" they advertise. I ate meals there with my husband to see what he was experiencing so this is not an idle comment. The DON non-responsive to concerns. I once came across an elderly woman in a wheelchair late at night. She had been left in the dining room of the DCU, had fallen asleep in her wheelchair and spilled a cup of coffee all over herself. I notified the staff but she was still there an hour later. My husband had things stolen from his room, there would often be wet towels on his bathroom floor when I arrived in the late afternoon, and no one helped him to shave for days at a time. One evening, I put a sign on his bathroom door that said, "Free shaves," and 8 men lined up to be shaved. They were all embarrassed at the poor condition of their hygiene. If I had to give an over-riding statement of the level of care residents received while my husband was at Emeritus, mercifully a brief 4 weeks, it would be to say that residents were treated with a shocking lack of respect or dignity. My strong recommendation is to avoid this facility at all costs.

I visited Emeritus very much. I thought the room was perfect. It was lovely and neat. The whole facility was very nice. However, my brother didn't like that they couldn't take him with his hover around, and they told him that he wouldn't be able to take it to the dining room or use it inside the building. It was kind of insulting to him.

It is a very clean place. My mother lived there when Kim N was the administrator and Carol P was the director of nursing. Care suffered after Carol left. My mother has since passed. I still recommend it over several other Sarasota assisted livings.

Emeritus is a very nice place. The unit is small enough for my mom and they gave me an all-inclusive price. My mom is in the dementia unit and so there’s not a lot of activities going on. They could do with a little more staff.

First, the staff there were so helpful with helping me decide where to place my mom. they took the time to help me make decisions on what kind of place i should be looking for. She was very adamant about not wanting to move into an "Old Folks Home" but when she visited they were so prepared for her. the food was amazing and the staff were all involved in talking and helping us feel welcomed into the community. They helped with all our worries by talking through they whole transition process and who all would be involved in my moms transition. They stated that gave better care than anyone in the industry because of the systems and processes they have in place and after them showing to me how it all worked we were convinced that this was the place for my mom!

I went to Emeritus at Sarasota but I wasn't quite impressed with the people there. It wasn't quite as friendly I guess. The person who did the tour was a chef and it looked like she was just shelved into the process.

My mother-in-law was living at the Emeritus in Sarasota for four years before she moved in with us. It was a good facility, but it costs too much money. The facility itself was nice, but the staff was not as nice in the beginning, so they had a change in staff. The service just declined in the last four years, the prices went up, and it has had a constant change in staff. My mother-in-law herself was mentioning that she doesn't want to stay there anymore, so we took her out. She wasn't given the treatment that she was supposed to get. One time she had a urinary tract infection and they didn't even contact us, they just took her to the hospital. They need to improve their staff.

It was very nice there. I had gone in and met with Elizabeth N. She was very nice and took me on a tour, showed me the sample apartment and went over rates. She also showed me the restaurant and everything else they got there. She was so accommodating. We also saw a few staff there said hello to the residents, they seemed to be well-liked. The residents there seemed to be okay. I like that the facility looked very homey. It was very warm and inviting. It seemed very clean. I didn't get to taste the food but that time the residents were eating supper and it smelled delicious in there!
