I visited this facility

Brookdale St. Augustine could use a little bit of an update. The facility was a little bit dated and a little bit darker than I would have liked in terms of the aesthetics of it. The day that I was there, their elevator was broken, so I had the chance to use the service hallway and it wasn't clean. To get to the second floor, we had to use the stairs and I had to go into the service area. It wasn't maintained. It was pretty dirty. The activities room was very disorganized. It's difficult for me to see how they would conduct any activities in that room. It was so bad. I spoke to some of the residents and one of the resident complaints was the lack of activities that they schedule. They often don't hold them. It would not be a choice for my sister. The salesperson who accommodated me was knowledgeable and personable. It needs a little bit of an update in terms of the interior. Certainly, they need to clean that service area, especially if there are going to be instances when the residents have to use it. There was a lift in the dirty hallway. The residents could sit on one of those stairlifts that go on a rail so that they didn't have to use the steps. They have a backup when the elevator goes out, which is good. In terms of pricing, I can only assess pricing based on a comparison to other facilities and I would say their pricing was lower than other facilities. It is an appropriate value for that place. They were offering discounts. They were running specials.

Brookdale St. Augustine is a nice enough facility. It's a little dated, but my uncle likes it. He likes the routine and he says the food's good there. When he was visiting relatives, he would frequently share meals with them and he was very happy with the place. We recently did a tour and the staff who took us around was very good. The rooms, as well as the dining areas, are adequate. It's a very pleasant-looking place. They just have a lot of a la carte things, so they're not inclusive, and I noticed that the residents didn't look quite as content as they did at another place we visited.

I visited this facility

Brookdale St. Augustine was an older facility, not as well-maintained, and it did not appear to be as clean or sanitary as some others I visited. The staff seemed pleasant, but not as engaging as other facilities. They also did admit to having some staffing challenges with the COVID environment. The dining area seemed adequate, but their meal plans were not nearly as client-friendly as the other facilities. They had an onsite salon and a library, but the activities seemed like they were pretty common with what I saw at other places.

Brookdale St. Augustine was nice. The staff showed us around and told us what kind of services they do, the cost, and stuff like that. The studio apartment that she showed us was really nice. We're surprised at how big it was. We toured the assisted living, and the amenities were good. My brother is deaf and needs a translator, so an interpreter would have been better. They don't have that. They have movie nights, puzzles, and any kind of games that they come up with.

I visited Brookdale St. Augustine a couple of months ago for my father. The place was clean and nice. They have their own hairstylist there, and the people were nice. The lady who accommodated us told us specifically what he is and is not allowed to do. He can smoke all night there. It sounded pretty good, and I think he would like it. There are single women there, so he could be with them or talk to them. He could get snacks all night long. They'll give him snacks and milk. They feed him three times a day. They would not allow him to drink. The staff was curious about what his was decision and where is he at. They made me feel comfortable, and it felt like I was at home in an apartment living with family. Overall, I would stay there myself when I am older. If ever I had to get help and get back on my feet, I would stay there.

The biggest thing that turned me off about Brookdale St. Augustine was that the memory care floor smelled like urine. I was not impressed with that at all and I talked to them about it. They had carpets in there and some of the residents were incontinent and it just doesn't work. The staff was very nice and accommodating. The building was very pretty, but that second floor was not good.

Brookdale St. Augustine was brand new, so we really weren’t able to see anything unfortunately because it was just opening. Everything seemed very nice and clean. It was nice. The staff was very friendly, and it gave me more of the impression it’s like a hospital or rehab center, but it was very clean, very well taken care of. and everybody was very pleasant. It didn’t give the appearance of like a nursing home which was nice. It wasn’t the best fit for my mom.

I didn’t care for Brookdale St. Augustine. It was big, and I didn’t care for the grounds because they looked barren. I found the facility itself to be cold and not cozy and inviting. The staff, I thought, was lovely. I thought the rooms were small and sterile. The facility was not a good fit for my mother, but it may be a good fit for somebody else.

Brookdale St. Augustine is going to go through some renovations. It did strike me as old. I have worked in nursing homes before as a therapist, and so I was not really excited about putting them somewhere, but this particular care facility seemed very nice. Like I said, it was going through some needed renovations.

Everything is good in Brookdale. The staff is great, food is good, and there's plenty of it. It’s clean. It’s just expensive. It’s what my mom needs as far as care, but it is pricey. Price started under $4,000. Now, it’s over $6,000. The whole place is pretty much a memory care, there’s no separate facility. Mom needs assistance with bathing, toiletries, and dressing, so that’s what shot the prices up. It’s pretty much round the clock assistance. Mom is comfortable. The staff is very friendly.

As with a lot of facilities, they put on a good show to get you in there but once there, the care falls to below grade. They do not shave my father, make sure he brushes his teeth. They do not see they have clean clothes on. One day my father had his pajamas on beneath his clothes. Sheets had not been changed in two weeks. Meal time is sad, sad, sad. They sit at banquet tables and eat off paper plates if they can feed themselves. Medical care is terrible. Cuts can go for hours undressed. One man fell and cracked his head open and a week later he still had caked blood on his face. I would not recommend anyone to this facility and as soon as the new place opens in SA, we will be moving.

What I have learned from personal experience is that you must stay fully invested in your loved one's care, especially those in the Memory Care Unit. I realize you are sold a package that leads you to believe that your loved one's needs will be fully met and you have invested financially in same but I can assure you from personal experience that the level of care will never meet your expectations. My expectations may be too high and I am still trying to figure out how best to meet the needs of my loved one, maintain my own sanity, and work with the staff at Brookdale. I do believe the aides are caring individuals and do the best they can most of the time. I suspect that it isn't much different in other AL/Memory Care facilities in the area

My mother has been a resident for 5 1/2 years. My dad visited him every day until he passed away, and now I go every day when I'm here (every 2 weeks. We've observed wonderful, compassionate care by all of the employees. My dad was so confident in them that he often said that when his time came, he wanted to be there, too. That speaks volumes! Mom started in a suite, which was very spacious, and moved to the memory care unit when the need became evident. BTW, the food is very good! We'll continue to keep Mom there as long as possible.

I had the chance to visit here when my family and I were determining the right place for my grandmother. We stumbled upon this facility and were very pleased with the overall space and activities given to the residences; not to undermine the wonderful care either. We then took a tour through the areas and seen the facilities multiple gardens, and when that was over ate some ice cream at their personal ice cream parlor. They also provide transportation to the surrounding city, which helps create more independence. In the end we moved to a different city, but this would have been our family's number one choice for finding a proper assisted living facility.

this is the first center that i went to, which meant that the customer rep sat down with a very confused person. she was patient and helpful. she led me through a number of issues i needed to know. making the decision to place a parent in a residence is complicated, and it is not just about the cost. thank you tally.
