We signed a contract for Aston Gardens at Pelican Marsh. It's something we can afford, and we liked what we saw. There's a library, a theater, a swimming pool, and an exercise room. The bills are included in your rent. The person that we have the most contact with is Darlene, and she answered all our questions. We met the director of the whole facility, and he was very kind and helpful in answering our questions. We met the chef that is the head of the restaurant and the preparation of the meals, and we met the exercise woman who gives advice and helps in the exercise room as to what is most beneficial. They're undergoing some renovations.

I've visited Aston Gardens at Pelican Marsh and it was pretty good. It's a broad facility and it's like an apartment complex, it's not just one monolithic structure. The tour was excellent, the staff was friendly, and the person I dealt with was very good. It was nice, though the actual room floor plan wasn't as nice as the other place I saw. This one is my second choice. They had excellent transportation for their residents, like for doctors' appointments. The facilities were better than the other place. They had a couple of dining areas and the workout facility was nice. One thing I was looking for was the exercise programs they provide. The only thing I didn't like was if I am in independent living and I needed assistance, I'd have to relocate to the facility that provided that, which is the next building over. It's going to be on an adjacent campus.

In early 2022 we left a deposit of $1000 to insure we would be notified of a vacancy for our desired accomodations. We have subsequently asked for a return of this deposit and have been given excuses for several months and now our calls are not being returned.

My mother is in Aston Gardens at Pelican Marsh. They've pretty much overpromised and underdelivered. I think that they just got inundated with a huge amount of seniors and they weren't prepared for it. I think that it was not necessarily all their fault, given the situation with COVID and a lot of people changing jobs and changing careers and not being able to hire the proper staff. One of the things that bothered my mom is that they only provide transportation to the "popular church of choice," which ends up not being my mom's choice. She sold her car when she moved there. We didn't think that she would need to have a car anymore because transportation was being provided to her when she only needed to go to church and go to the grocery store. The whole church thing has been a huge disappointment to her. The other thing is they used to allow residents to keep their bicycles or adult three-wheeled bikes in the front of the apartment buildings. The actual residents who live there decided that they didn't want the bikes in front of the apartments anymore. They only found two spots within the community to stick them in like a carport, which made it pretty inconvenient for those who didn't live across the street or across the way from that particular carport in that building and would have to walk quite a ways to go get their bike. If somebody is in their mid-eighties, that's a huge issue. They were supposed to have a variety of things on their menu, and they don't have that. My mom has not seen a rotation in the menu yet, but I also know that they're short-staffed due to the pandemic and people moving into other careers and whatnot. They are struggling and they could have a nice place there, but they don't have the help. They're not staffed properly to do so. They're working on it, which is what I'm told, but when you're 80-something years old, you don't want to hear, "Oh, yeah, we're working on it. We're doing the best that we can." She lives in a one-bedroom, one-bath, so it makes more sense to have a Jack and Jill kind of bathroom so that the person can access the bathroom from the bedroom versus having to go out into the living room to be able to enter the bathroom. They have a great social activities calendar, a hair salon right there on the premises, and the clubhouse is great. The residents are all very nice and friendly. It's more of a management issue. They need to just be more honest with the residents about their shortcomings, rather than saying, "Oh, yeah, we're working on it, this is a great place to live in," like really building that sales hype because as a family, that's what sold us. Then after getting involved, it just became kind of a disappointment. Once you move your 85-year-old mother in there, it makes it difficult to end up uprooting her again and moving her someplace else.

We chose Aston Gardens at Pelican Marsh. It was very welcoming and Julie who handled the sales was delightful. The rooms were lovely. They provide two meals a day, breakfast and lunch or breakfast and dinner. They have a library, a card room, a theater, a barbershop, a beauty shop, and a gym. They have every kind of amenity that you could ask for including a chipping green. It's perfectly located for us. It was central to everything that we do. Overall, we were very pleased with the rates and everything. They offered just absolutely everything that a person could ask for. You have housekeeping and transport service. They even actually change your sheets on your bed and wash and fold your sheets. It's perfect for us as independent livers because we don't need assistance right now, but they also can move you from independent to assisted.

Assisted Living at Aston Gardens has turned into a nightmare. Things were going downhill, and then all the managers left in Sept/Oct 2021. The director or AL, the Director of Nursing and Wellness, the Memory Care director, the Activities Director. Then almost all of the care givers. Some were not great to begin with but some were. There is a new director now but there is virtually no staff. They constantly have caregivers from temp agencies who don’t know what they’re doing and do not know the residents. And not enough help. Mom is often left languishing in the morning with no one to help her get dressed and to breakfast. It has been a constant battle. They won’t pay what they need to for full time help. We hate to have to move mom who has Alzheimer’s because of this. We have had multiple conversations with upper management to no avail. I am stressed out everyday trying to get mom the basic care we signed up for. It’s a nightmare.
