I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother moved to the Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of Melbourne. It's very neat, clean, and modern. And the food is good, my mother says, and they give her everything she needs as far as health and personal care. The staff has been great. They call me if they need to. Otherwise, they talk to me when I'm there and they have a monthly review of each resident. And if I'm not able to make it, they will conference me at my home. The room is shared. It is just like a basic hospital room, and my mother is near the window, which she enjoys because she could see out. It's all on one floor. There is furniture in there that you can use. The bathroom is attached and they have that curtain screen in the middle to segregate the patients. But it's neat and clean. They have activities, bingo, and other sort of such board games. They have crafts. There's a common area like a wing, and they have coffee, tea, and hot chocolate every morning for the residents to get together and talk. So, there are opportunities to interact among the residents.

I visited this facility

I was taken to this facility via transport and left in an ambulance. This was the worst experience of my life! I’ve never felt more like a burden than I did while I was there. I begged the Cna to call the doctor something was wrong. Luckily my wife had called and I was able to barely yell call 911 I can’t breath! After her calling and having 5 other people call 911 the ambulance showed up. Doctors at the hospital told me I had 2 blood clots in my lungs. 2 days later I would be dead. After crying to the nurse at the hospital they promised me they would not send me back to that terrible place. The staff was not concerned about my well-being at all! I had half my skull removed from having a massive stroke yet after falling off the bed they still couldn’t put me in a d bed with rails. I lost 15 pounds in 6 days in this nightmare of a place. They literally just kept feeding me pain pills and went about their business (not taking care of the patients) if you have ANY other options I would recommend using those options and NOT the consulate! This place should be shut down!

I visited this facility

My brother was a resident at this facility. He was seriously ill and complained that he was going to have a seizure. The staff informed that a doctor was coming to see him. For 8 hours they failed to answer their phones. I never heard from the doctor. Eight hours later they transported him to a hospital less than a mile away via ambulance. He died the following day. I continue to feel guilt for allowing him to stay at this facility.

I was on the phone twice today with my friend when a nurse or aide came in. I could hear the entire conversation and the aide was rude and belligerent. My friend asked for help with the TV since the remote disappeared and was told he would have to wait until Monday. He then asked for a drink and was told the kitchen was closed and when he asked for ice was told she was too busy to get it. I have called many times and the phone is always out of order. Nothing seems to work in this place including the help. I have also been told that 95% of the time the food is also is unfit to eat and the therapy is virtually nonexistent. They just seem to want your money and could care less if you get any better. I would stay as far away from this place as possible!

Let my family member sit in own urine and feces. Did not tell me about meetings. Disregarded my input and educational credentials. Asked me if I had given them financial proof for long term Medicaid application, even though they assisted me in completely the application. Unavailability. No one seemed to know anything and no one seemed to be accountable or accessible. If you have any feeling for your loved one don’t ever send them here. Do not go or send anyone to this place until you have personally visited it and talked to someone who has been a patient there. A health official was appalled at their poor practices. Staff interactions with resident and family members were worse than unacceptable, rude and he was held hostage for a week. They refused to release required paperwork when he and his family requested it for a transfer to another facility.

I am/was a resident of this facility

I was admitted as a rehab patient after back surgery. I developed a a bed sore and almost died. The care was AWFUL. The aides never answered the call button. I would call my wife and she would call to get someone to come to my room. When I would see an amaide walking in the hall, I called to them. They wouldn’t respond. I developed a high fever. The doctor never came to see me. My wife came and rushed me to the hospital. The doctors in the emergency room said I would have died had I not got there within a couple of hours. THIS PLACE SHOULD BE CLOSED!!!

My father stays in Consulate Health Care Of Melbourne. The care has to be monitored. I wouldn't leave someone alone in there that didn't have family that was going to be with them. We do have a lot of issues. The food is terrible, according to my father, and they have very little activities for him. My father entertains himself on a computer most of the day. He also reads and watches TV. They have bingo, but he hates it. The staff members have tried very hard to help my father adjusts, but the business office is very difficult to deal with. The nursing staff and the aide staff have really gone the extra mile to make sure my father got what he needed. I had lots of complaints when he went there, but they worked at resolving them.

Mom has been at Consulate for more than 2 years. It's very obvious that Consulate has been working hard to improve. I'm from out of town, but I try to visit frequently. Every time I come I notice lots of improvements to the facility. Everything is cleaner, pleasingly decorated, and there have been many upgrades. Best of all the staff is responsive to my questions and concerns about mom's care. Any concerns I have are addressed immediately. Management is hands on and they always have time to speak with me. The CNAs and Aides have been very helpful and accommodating. The head nurse has been there a long time and is very knowledgeable and also hands on. As an aside I've also noticed a more positive attitude among the staff - lots more smiles and conversations. The rooms are large enough for 2 people without feeling crowded. The bathrooms could do with updating, but are usually pretty clean. Physical Therapy, etc. is in the building so it's easy for residents to attend. The salon is open on Thursdays. It could do with a little prettying up as well, but she does a great job on mom's hair. Holidays are celebrated in a nice fashion. Mom particularly likes Bingo, Saturday nail day and anything special. There are other things offered but not everyone likes to participate in everything. Maybe some more encouragement to get the residents to an activity would be helpful to ward off boredom and depression. As said in another review, the food can probably be improved and it would be nice to see snacks offered in that span between lunch and dinner. I think they are available for residents to help themselves, but not everyone can. A newer bed for mom would also be good. I don't know about the condition of the other beds, but hers can use some care - maybe even a newer mattress. There's always room for improvement, but I think Consulate is on the right road. Please keep up the good work - it shows.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My husband is in Consulate Health Care Of Melbourne. It so happened that I signed up Lenny up for Medicaid, and they would take care of everything. We're getting along fine on Medicaid. Consulate is an older building; there's always repairs to be done. But if you go in and ask Lenny how he is doing, he'll say, 'I'm happy here.' So he is fine. He hasn't eaten one of their meals though. I would bring lunch in, and he eats my lunch; I eat his tray. The food leaves a lot to be desired. Sometimes, it is frustrating. Things have a way of disappearing, and that's number 1. Secondly, we're the last ones to get the meals. Tonight, the meal was cold. I had to go and have it warmed up, but I'm not allowed access to the microwave, so I had to wait until a CNA came along to warm it up for me. The CNAs would come on board at 3 p.m., and we don't see them until quarter of 4. The trays start coming up at 5 p.m., but we're the last one. The CNAs if they don't come right on, it doesn't give them time to change and get the patients ready for dinner. Sometimes Lenny has to eat supper with a wet brief on.
