I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

They may look appealing in pictures or tours but please don't let that fool you. With having someone that was on the rehab unit, I expect to see more caring staff. I don't. Housekeeping may be the only exception. I understand that all nursing homes are short staffed right now. But that's not an excuse to not answer call bells, to throw diapers on residents because they don't want to take them to the bathroom in a timely fashion, to ignore requests for pain medicine. These people are elderly and deserve the best care. Not neglect from nursing staff. If you have time to sit and chat, be on your phones and take your smoke breaks then you have plenty of time to do your jobs and treat people with dignify and respect!!

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My father was in Valerie Manor, run by Athena Healthcare, for rehab after a fall back in May-June 2020. Everytime we visited he was in pain, crying or hungry/thirsty. My family and I would take turns visiting daily to keep an eye on my Dad through an exterior window because we could not go in due to Covid. We complained daily about his care and because he said he was in pain and could not feed himself. We found out his hand was broken after 2 weeks of asking them to check and see what was wrong, but only after calling the Administrator and threatening them with filing a complaint with the State. Even after the discovery of his broken hand, they still left the food and water to feed himself. When I complained to the head nurse, she said, "I can move his room so he is closer to the nurses station" I said, " So your neglecting him because he is at the end of the hall?" I filed complaints with the State of CT(who did nothing) Anthena Healthcare, met with the Administrator and head staff, but it was too late. May Dad begged us to take him home where he passed 2 weeks later. I believe that Athena Healthcare was totally responsible for his passing. If you have a loved one who needs care/rehab Valerie Manor IS NOT the place to take them to recover.

Valerie Manor is a very pretty location. It's an open area and they have great physical therapy. My father looked forward to working with the physical therapists there. There are two people per room or they might have a private room (my father was in a shared one). The CNAs were fabulous working with him and they remembered his name. The nurses were great, too. The social working staff communicated greatly with me. I am out of state and Valerie Manor, hands down, has been fabulous to work with. The front area when you walk in has a nice piano where they had a piano player that came through (he was able to participate in that). He also enjoyed eating the meals. There were very few that he didn't like, but the variety was nice and it was served warm. We paid by Medicare so that was great.

All of the residents are drugged! My dad could barely keep his eyes open!

I am a friend or relative of resident

My mother had a recent stay in the rehab unit here, following a surgery. I understand that my mom is the type of patient that no one wants to deal with, but that does not excuse the horrible care she received. She was left lying in her feces for hours several times. On the rare occasion that she was changed, her hands were not cleaned. (Due to dementia she would touch it.) Physical therapy stopped having her walk daily about a month before she got out, saying she'd reached her potential, so she just stayed in bed for the rest of her stay, growing weaker. Possibly understaffed, I'm not sure. They found my mom on the floor every other day, unable to get up, right up until she was released to go home. No services in place for her at home, looks like they'll start in a few weeks. Meanwhile, my mom now lives on the couch in depends. The one times she's attempted walking she fell and called 911. She is way worse off now than when she went to VM, at least she was walking. If you're not willing to work with difficult patients at a nursing home, perhaps you're better off in another field? All I can say is never again.

I am/was a resident of this facility

This facility is a wonderful facility. the nurses are wonderful, work very hard to provide wonderful care. The only issue I had with my stay was the D.O.N. at the facility could be very rude to the staff and does not know how to speak to families, whom can be stressed during their families stay at this facility. She was very short with the staff and downright rude to my family member, while we were all inder a great deal of stress at the time of my stay, she made it more difficult. Besides our run in with her, my recent stay was wonderful. Maybe she will do better with time, as she appears to be new at what she is doing, but being able to speak with patients should be required of the staff. Like I said, everyone else was wonderful, the boss was the only one we had any trouble with at all. She is also unprofessional in how she talks about other employees in front of patients. very rude.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

Valerie Manor is a wonderful facility for my grandmother to live in. All the nurses are very friendly and caring and I always feel welcome whenever I visit. They take very good care of my grandmother and make sure all of her needs are met.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

Valery Manor was not one of the best nursing home's I've visited. It smelled horrid and the nurses were not very nice at all. The service wasn't great either. It would take a minimum of ten minutes for my grandmother to get the help she needed when she rang for a nurse. The food was absolutely gross. But the biggest thing that bothered me was the smell and how dirty the place was. I know nursing homes smell, but this one smelt worse than others I've been to. You could just tell by the smell that it hadn't been cleaned in awhile. You could smell the urine.
