What programs or activities does Brookdale Buckingham offer to keep residents engaged? How does the staff engage residents' long-term memories?
We offer person centered activities as well as group activities 365 days a year, our activities start at 10 a.m. and go till after 7p.m. with a trained experienced Life Enrichment coordinator, and or resident care associates. We go our twice a week to various outings with residents. We take pride in learning as much as we can about our residents and we ask that they complete with our coordinator the “Life story” so when they move in we know where they lived, their family background, occupations, likes dislikes with food and hobbies etc, this important information is kept in binders in specific areas and we use and refer to frequently especially when someone may need a little extra help or calming or just to talk about their life with them so they are not a stranger to us. It is used daily as we engage and talk with them and do various activities we have learned they will enjoy.
Who assesses residents' health and cognitive functioning? How often is that assessment repeated?
The Assessment is done prior to residency, than 30 days after the move-in then and if needs change our Health and Wellness coordinator is in touch with the family so with dementia it is more frequently with memory care
What techniques does Brookdale Buckingham use to support memory care residents during mealtimes?
Mealtime we offer a “Refresh” program before the meal which is essential oil infused warmed up wash-towels to clean their hands before each meal, we use citrus during the day and pm, lavender, we pair residents that we feel can engage at the same level and where they are in their journey with their memory loss, we have special tables for those who need meal assistance for meal queuing and feeding, staff and mangers assist. Soft music with our special “In touch” programs offers calming/happy music at every meal
How does Brookdale Buckingham keep residents' families informed about their loved ones' health?
We have two neighborhoods each are identical within our building but allows us to help with 26 residents on each side with a team of helpers for each side of the neighborhoods, and each side has their normal regular aides and nurse, so they become the eyes and ears since we discourage them from changing back and forth to the other neighborhoods, they get used to the residents behaviors , personalities routines and see when things are not normal or off. Our Nurse on each neighborhood responds to the family members as well as our HWD.The residents can move freely throughout the full building inside except during mealtimes and after dinner.
