    Extreme Disappointment

I have an elederly parent who is there for rehab care after a broken hip. At 95 she is if frail but is totally with it . The care she has gotten is deplorable. I think greater care is taken for a dog at a veterinary facility. She is in extreme pain and they have not been able or have withheld her with the pain meds required to alleviate that pain because they have to come from the dispensary in Middletown CT. She requires a assistance going to the bathroom however instead of having 2 aid assist her ....they put her in a diaper saying this is easier .... for whom? This is a very proud woman . That type of Treatment is just Degrading. A nurse comes in and barely can take vitals before she has to literally run out to care for other patients. Due to the broken hip she is not suppose to sit or put any weight on the hip.. so what do they do ???? they get her up and sit her in a wheel chair. She requires a specific regimen of pill at specific times .... They have NO regard for that Timetable. Seriously? This is what they call critical care in rehabilitation facility? I guess this is where you go to Die Not get Better.

I am a friend or relative of resident

My mother is in the short term rehab section of the Jewish Home. She specifically requested that she be sent there s/p angioplasty, having had a positive experience there 4 years ago s/p hip surgery. She is extremely unhappy with the care (or lack of care) that she and other guests are receiving. She keeps saying that it is understaffed, the staff are not trained adequately, the facility is not clean, the food is usually cold and inedible (except the soups). She was given a "2 minute" shower where she barely got wet before the aide said it was time to go. When she or her roommate make a simple request or need assistance, the staff promise to come but often do not, particularly at night. Many of the staff are per diem, making it difficult to establish a relationship or routine with folks who are not that familiar with the unit and patients. A few long term employees are very good but due to understaffing, they cannot always provide the care they would like. My mother said that she would never recommend the facility to anyone which is very sad to me as we always held it in such high regard. She asked that I post her review on line as she was not sure to whom she should complain.

My grandmother is very much enjoying the environment. The staff is incredibly friendly and treat her with respect. She enjoys being able to socialize with the other residents and enjoys the planned events and games. She has access to many types of food which she enjoys and the facility is easy for me and other members of my family to access to visit her. The staff was also able to respond to questions about the area when we were searching for somewhere to take her on her day out. After losing her husband, she has had trouble being happy and making friends, but we are confident that this facility has restored her confidence. We would easily recommend this facility to anyone looking for an assisted care facility. We looked at many before this, and while we were impressed with some, this one offered the most amenities to provide her with a comfortable and enjoyable life.

I would say that the facility has very clean and well maintained grounds and interior. The seniors are brought outside and assisted with moving around the facility very graciously. The food appeared adequate and the nurses were attentive. There seemed to be some difficulty regarding the loss of personal items from time to time in the rooms but it was not a significant complication. When I visited it was mother's day and the facility was hosting live music. The music was relatively good for the venue and my grandmother was very happy to be able to enjoy it with her family. The space each senior has seems a bit small to me but perhaps they place them based on mobility. My grandmother, being largely immobile, perhaps does not need a whole room to herself that may be why she is placed in a smaller room with a roommate. The room had a window that opened out into the lovely well maintained grounds and it catches the sunlight very well, so I imagine many of the other rooms do as well.

The Jewish Home for the Elderly is an excellent nursing home where my grandmother has stayed for 5 years. She's checked on regularly, her health is closely monitored, and has a wide variety of meals to choose from. While the facility primarily serves Jewish elderly, my grandmother has been Christian her whole life and has never been judged. She would say she is unhappy but she hasn't taken full advantage of the benefits of JHE, including the outdoor courtyard and gardens where families can eat out with them, or go for a stroll. They also organize live performances from local musicians and actors. Last fall, they had a Rat Pack Tribute perform and it was a big hit. She also has a few nurses who have taken to personally visiting her for a few hours each day. She may have to move into a shared room, but I think it will do her some good to get a roommate.

A SNF which provides dedicated, individualized thorough care for all of its residents/patients.
