I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

The San Marino assisted living was at one time a privately owned caring community where both residents and staff were treated with respect and dignity — but now just corporate-owned with overworked minimum staff and uncaring corporate management. The AL side management wants residents that have minimal needs, they want docile residents to sit in the lobby or their rooms with little engagement or enrichment. I had a loved one there with early Alzheimer’s disease and they ignored the neurologist's assessment of him only needing an assisted living level of care. Instead, the management wanted him in their memory care unit because of “potential insurance risk”. Ignoring the Neurology assessment, San Marino issued a 30-day lease termination because the family took the advice of medical professionals and not the corporate bureaucrats. They have terminated many leases of residents over the last 6 months because they need some care. Don’t move your loved one to San Marino if they need assisted living.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

We have my friend in Arbors of San Marino, and she seems to be adjusting reasonably well. As far as we know, they are meeting her needs. I really think we're going to be taken care of. The staff members are incredible and very, very accommodating. They let us go in and they helped us get settled. If there's anything we need, we call the front desk and within several minutes, they're at her door and they meet her needs. They're doing her laundry and helping her with showering. She was confused about killing time, and they actually bought her a watch -- one that she can actually see and understand. They really are very accommodating. I love the staff; they're wonderful. They have a cleaning service that comes in at least once a week. They have a lobby area where the residents can come, work on a puzzle, and visit with one another. My friend's room has a view that looks out over a greenbelt area. It's a beautiful view. She's on the first floor, so she doesn't have to deal with stairs. The dining room is very orderly and very neat. She has the option of choosing meals down there and an option to fix something in her room. She doesn't have a stove, but she has a microwave, a toaster, and a coffee pot. Sometimes, she stays in her room, but other times she goes down to the dining room. The facility is wonderful. I'm really very pleased with it from what I've seen up to this point. My friend hasn't made any comments about the food. I just know that she goes down to the dining room, but I personally haven't tasted it. I don't know what's even on the menu. We have our own TV that we brought in, and they're offering cable TV, but she doesn't know how to use cable, so we have a regular antenna. They play games with them in the lobby. I think they have bingo and a Bible study, but my friend has never gone. They can work on a puzzle and visit, and I think they play card games. I don't know of any other planned activities. I think it's a good value for the money. I'm very pleased.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother originally moved into the independent living side and for two years she loved life as she enjoyed the activities and social environment. This year my mom needed more care so she moved her to the assisted living side. At first great but in the last 6 months we have experienced poor care, un-knowledgeable staff, isolation for residents and poor communication. Management staff doesn’t return phone calls or emails. When you talk with them they don’t give clear answers. A few who work there care for residents but mostly under staffed and not able to care for residents like they should. Do not leave your loved one at this facility.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

We were fortunate to get a studio for our mother when she moved from Arizona. Her new life was going to begin at the Arbors. She originally moved into the studio to then be on the waiting list for a 1 bedroom. They did commit to her being first on the list for a one bedroom because one became available and we had to pass it up due to her health. The studio was wonderful. We were able to furnish nicely with the kitchen area being perfect. We cannot say enough about the staff. She became their mother in how they cared for her. She became ill immediately after she arrived. Our family would not have wanted her to be anywhere else but there. We can't even begin to say how wonderful ALL of the staff was with our mother from nurses, CNA's, staff that did daily functions with her, housekeeping, just everything! I don't intend to leave anyone out but every single staff person at San Marino was wonderful. They all were our mothers angels. The Executive Director, Margi, and Bailey, took us under their wings to help us through a painful time with our mother not knowing she was ill when she got here. She did look forward to going to eat with everyone and the staff was there to take her when she selected her seating time she wanted to sit at. The salon was wonderful. I am at a loss with the stylist name but our mother has only had her hair done once and she is 95! She did her hair and our mother was so happy with it. Didn't even touch it after. For anyone that is looking for a wonderful assisted living for their loved ones, San Marino is wonderful. I hope one day I can do something for them as they did for our family at a very hard time. My mother is in Arbors of San Marino. It is a beautiful community. They have a very good staff. They serve three meals a day, do laundry and housekeeping, and dispense her medications. They provide activities for all of the seniors. They don't have shared rooms, so she has her own studio apartment. They have studios, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom units. They have a beauty shop, a library, and different garden areas.

I visited this facility

Moved my mom into the harbors of san marino and the family and myself were pretty happy at first, after two months we were not so happy anymore! During the night in November my mom's heat went out and instead of fixing the problem they told her to use a space heater! When it brought this up to the administration I was told she was sorry and would have it fixed, one week later, my poor mom was STILL using the space heater! I asked the girl in house keeping and she spoke no English! I again went to administration and was told the administrator was out and I would have to come back another time! Needless to say we moved my mom to another facility! I personally would not recommend San Marino for the care of elderly love ones.

Please do not send your loved ones here, you will regret it. They don't have enough employees to care for the residents, the facility is dated and falling apart, the transportation they offer is unsafe, half of the employees don't speak english...It's just not a great place for your family member to live, PLEASE DON'T PUT THEM THROUGH THIS.

I visited this facility

San Marino is an older building and the rooms are a little smaller. It was beautiful, the staff was very friendly, and they had a lot of things that I liked. They have an aviary where you could watch the birds, and a big courtyard with flowers and raised flowerbeds. Mom went with us when we looked at it and she liked it. I would have moved her in there.

Other

My mom was a resident at Arbors of San Marino on two separate 6-month stays. Unfortunately, her stay was first interrupted by rehabilitation care at a nursing home, and more recently her needs again required a nursing home. Our whole family has nothing but praise for Arbors of San Marino! They run a clean, modern facility for much less than other assisted living. They do not nickel and dime their residents for every bit of service like most facilities do. The food is good and the dining room is very pleasant. The entire staff makes a special effort to know everyone, to make them feel welcome and to address all the resident/family needs. They were very understanding of my mom's changing health needs. Arbors of San Marino was more than fair in their room charges in our four moves in and out. They even sent flowers to my mom in both of her new facilities! In this facility "compassion" is not just a word, it's a practice. Highly Recommended!

I am a friend or relative of a resident

The staff at San Marino was absolutely wonderful. They were very patient with my grandmother who could be a handful at times. They were very cooperative with us to make accommodations for her. The studio room that she was in was the perfect size for either one person to have a lot of open space for family to visit or for a couple looking to get rid of the responsibilities of a house and enjoy their retirement. Their rooms come with a great little kitchen for small meals. The assisted living offers a great meal area as well that served all the daily meals with great variety for the residents. The activities were a great opportunity for the residents. They offered great opportunities for the residents to get out and still be active in a safe environment. The pricing offered for the community was by far the best price we were able to find anywhere. I would recommend this community to anybody that asked.

I visited this facility

This is an assisted living community, with a separate unit dedicated exclusively to memory care. The facility is located directly off of Sheridan, which is a well traveled road. There is easy access"”and plenty of parking once you arrive. The outside looks adobe, so it's quite striking and has a unique feel"”as opposed to most assisted living facilities that look like "normal" housing. The grounds are really pretty and pleasing"”equipped with beautiful gardens and walkways on the site. And the common areas and rooms inside are kept very clean. With only 91 units"”studios and one bedrooms"”the place has an intimate feeling. There are a number of well organized activities"”games, arts and crafts and tours. A number of different things are offered, both in and out of the facility, to keep people engaged. The care is good. There are two LPNs on duty during the daytime, along with seven other caregivers. And at night, there are four caregivers and one nurse on duty; that's a good ratio of caregivers to residents. Staff members there go out of their way to answer questions and make sure residents get the care they need. Because this is a smaller place, it may be best suited to those in the early stages of dementia, who can still get around but may need some help in orienting themselves. -Ruth Hillesheim, a social worker with extensive nursing home experience, with an emphasis on Alzheimer's and dementia care.

I visited this facility

This is an older facility, but still in really nice shape. The location is easy to find, with good parking for visitors. A homey touch is a huge fish tank in a central location, with a nice garden area, with pleasant places to walk around. The care staff is really good. The nursing director, who sets the tone for care there, is one of the best there is anywhere"”a friendly woman who spends time with each resident. She is very accessible and the residents all know and like her. She. The nurses are constantly around and seem attentive, which is good for family members who want information and it also helps with other health and safety concerns. Residents say the food is good. There is no gym or exercise equipment, which is a drawback for many people. There are basic exercise classes, but nothing too involved. The staff at The Arbors seem to take clients out in the community a lot, which shows they are willing to go the extra mile to help people feel engaged. The rooms are smaller than average, and equipped with safety and disability equipment, but there is nothing exciting about the layout. If there is a couple living in one room, it gets a bit cramped; couples might want to check out other facilities that can accommodate them better. This is a great transitional facility"”there are patio homes, regular apartments, apartment with meals and assisted living, which makes it easy to shift around in the facility should care needs change. However, it may not be a good fit for someone who needs memory care or a lot of supervision.
