What ongoing training does the staff receive in dementia care?
All Springs Ranch employees are given several hours of dementia care training during their on-boarding process. We train in the Positive Approach to Care method developed by Teepa Snow. After initial training, monthly in-service trainings are provided, as well as day to day on the spot trainings as opportunities arise. Our head nurse has over 20+ years experience working with dementia residents and is very skilled and knowledgeable in all aspects of dementia care.
Describe the overall population of independent living residents at Springs Ranch Memory Care & Craftsman Cottages. What is their average age? What are their favorite things to do?
With only 12 cottages, we are a smaller IL. Average age is probably 75. Most of our residents keep to themselves and enjoy the quiet and security of our gated community. Pre-COVID we offered up to 20 hours of activities for our IL residents and hope to resume them soon. Residents have full access to request activities they would like.
What places are nearby for independent living residents to enjoy?
We are located directly across the street from a movie theater and large shopping center area. Many restaurants, stores, and several hotels are within walking distance. Less than half a mile down the road is a YMCA. We are also located very near Peterson AFB, so retirees can easily access their military amenities.

Outings have included trips to local museums, restaurants, movies and grocery trips.

Two days per week are reserved for pre-scheduled medical appointments. There are also weekly shopping trips scheduled.
What makes the chef or dining program at Springs Ranch Memory Care & Craftsman Cottages exceptional? What kind of menu can independent living residents expect?
Our IL residents are provided one chef-prepared meal, either lunch or dinner, delivered to their door daily. The chef also prepares a special monthly dinner for our IL residents in our club house. Past meals have included Prime Rib, Apricot glazed chicken, and BBQ.
What common areas are available for independent living residents?
Our cottages are actually patio homes, with private yards and patios. There is a playground for visiting grandchildren, and residents also may reserve the club house.
What safety features or security measures does Springs Ranch Memory Care & Craftsman Cottages offer to independent living residents?
Our cottages are located on a secure, gated cul-de-sac. The entire neighborhood is surrounded by a brick wall or wrought-iron fence. Additionally, we ask each cottage to check in via a button on the wall on a daily basis. If we have not heard from them by a specific time, we will call or visit to check on them.
If Springs Ranch Memory Care & Craftsman Cottages accepts dogs or cats, what indoor/outdoor areas can they enjoy?
We do accept small pets. Each cottage has its own fenced back yard where pets can roam freely. They must be leashed in our front yards and on any common property. City sidewalks are easily accessed and residents can walk for miles in either direction from the community.

We are not affiliated or contracted with any specific home health agency or home care agency. We can make recommendations if asked, but we are not able to provide any medical assistance to our IL residents.
What programs or activities does Springs Ranch Memory Care & Craftsman Cottages offer to keep residents engaged? How does the staff engage residents' long-term memories?
Our Active Living programming includes a variety of daily activities that are designed to engage, entertain and stimulate our residents. We offer dual programming throughout the day to accommodate the needs of residents who have different levels of ability. At any given time, we offer 2 different guided activities - one for our higher functioning residents and one for those who need additional assistance.
Who assesses residents' health and cognitive functioning? How often is that assessment repeated?
Our nurse assesses all new residents prior to their arrival at Springs Ranch to determine care level as well as our ability to properly care for them. They are assessed again after their first month with us, then every 6 months or sooner, if there is a change in condition. Family care conferences are scheduled after each assessment to discuss care.
What techniques does Springs Ranch Memory Care & Craftsman Cottages use to support memory care residents during mealtimes?
Our chef maintains a board containing all special dietary needs of our residents, which is readily accessible to staff who are serving meals. Residents are not assigned seating, but we do try to place residents with similar interests and needs together when possible. We offer regular, mechanical soft and pureed food as ordered by a physician. We also physically assist residents who are unable to successfully feed themselves. We use prompts, demonstration, hand over hand and even feeding as needed.
How does Springs Ranch Memory Care & Craftsman Cottages keep residents' families informed about their loved ones' health?
We maintain frequent phone and text communication with our families as well as emailed messages from our Executive Director and Nurses. Our Active Living Director also takes frequent photos of residents during activities and emails them to the appropriate family. During COVID shut down, we have utilized technology to do Skype and Facetime visits as well as phone calls. Recently we have started doing outdoor face to face visits with family members.

There are two primary hospitals in the Colorado Springs area - Centura owned Penrose Hospital and UCHealth owned Memorial Hospital. Both have main hospitals and several smaller branch hospitals located throughout the city. We are not affiliated with either company, and our residents are free to use whichever hospital they prefer or is in network with their health insurance.
