I thought The Gardens at Park Balboa was a very nice community. Nice space and good programs. It looked like they had a good schedule of activities. The staff was very nice. We dealt with one person. The gentleman gave us a tour of the dining room and activities room. There was an apartment that was already taken, and he showed us what it looked like. It was nice. It was okay.

The Gardens at Park Balboa is very nice, I liked it. The problem is my husband requires insulin shots in the morning and afternoon and they don't have a nurse. I like the fact that it's close to my mother's place, so it's easy for me to go to visit my husband if I decide to take him there. It looks like a very friendly environment, and I like the fact that they have activities for their people. I only interact with the host, his name is Jonathan, and a couple of people there. He was friendly and gave us all the information we needed, and I like the fact that they have a bilingual staff, my husband is speaking Spanish, so is very confused with the languages. But good to know they have a Spanish-speaking staff too. I saw a garden that was nice to have for walking. They have a lunchroom, and they have a small living room as well. And they had music and there was dancing. That was nice.

I did a tour of The Gardens at Park Balboa. On the outside, I wasn't too impressed, but on the inside it is good. I did like the size of the room; it was pretty big for the price. The staff who assisted me was very good and very friendly like family, so I was going to end up going with them. They have a really good chef that had worked there for 13 years. That's been the same chef, and they have a really big menu. When I went there, they had someone playing an instrument. So, they had music, gardening, and doing morning walks together. They go to museums together on a bus.

The Gardens at Park Balboa was clean and neat. They're very professional, very friendly, and very open. The staff was great. I did the tour with two different people, and it was a wonderful tour. The room had a refrigerator. They had at least two lovely outdoor areas. They had a living room and an activity room. They seemed to have a lot of activities, and they're in person (which I really like as opposed to video).

They were always going into her room unannounced, leaving her door unlocked. Her new furniture was stolen right out of her room before her 30 day notice to leave was up. They will not reimburse her for a desk that she wanted to give to a staff member but that staff member never received it because it was stolen. False cameras at parking gates so no one saw who stole her desk, end table and couch. All brand new. Marketing manager lost her TB test results that he said she would be reimbursed for and now they won't reimburse her for them. Marketing manager said one price but when we went to sign the papers it was not the price we were told. They told us that they had a van for transportation, but it was out of commission for the entire 3 months that she lived there and they were not refunding any money because their rent didn't include the transportation? Some charity covered the transportation cost? Really? How ridiculous. The room was nice but noisy with old thin paned windows. Some of the staff was nice but even though we were told that there were 2 other blind people living there & that they had experience with sight impaired people, that was not true. Activities were non-existent for people with sight issues because they weren't interested in giving any help to include her. We were told that there were daily walks "with lots of the residents" which there never were but they refused to guide her, teach her the exercise routines that she personally spoke to the person in charge of that but turned out to be non-existent. Bingo was the only activity that she was able to participate in because she had her own cards. No movie nights, no available transportation or alternatives given. Meals were very good but no vegetables were offered. Towards the end, they had only one server so meals would come to the table cold. If you need a place to PARK your loved one, this is the place. If your loved one has any desire for activities, put them somewhere else. And rent furniture otherwise it might be stolen right out of their room! Her room was always unlocked even though she would lock it.

My aunt moved into The Gardens at Park Balboa. So far, we are very pleased with it. My aunt is enjoying it. She's enjoying the food. She's quite forgetful, but it's assisted living and memory care. I think we've got her in the right place. My aunt can order off the menu if she doesn't want to have what they're serving that day. She has two dogs that they allowed. She's gone to a couple of the happy hours. She's gone to the bingo a couple of times. I think she went to one or two of the entertainments where they had some singers or something. She seems to be settling in rather nicely. It looks like there are a lot of activities there.

A loved one moved into The Gardens at Park Balboa. We love it and he loves it. He gets three meals a day, there's a happy hour, bingo, and he has his own apartment. They drive him to and from medical appointments. He's really happy so far and he's been there for two weeks now. The food is good.

My mother has been in assisted living for over 8 years. Her health and mental state has declined so my brother and I had a meeting with Dion the director and head of memory care Lupe. We all decided it was time to move my mom into the Safe Haven memory care unit. Dion and all of the staff helped us with the move. They helped us with every step of the way with compassion and even setting up lunch to have with my mom. This is a great place if you need to find a facility for one of your loved ones! Thank you Dion, and all the staff that helped us though this.

I toured The Gardens at Park Balboa. The woman was who showed me the place was very nice. However, the place itself was very depressing to me. There is a small living room with a couple of people in wheelchairs, and nothing to do but just sit there in their wheelchairs. It was so sad. Upstairs, the recreational room is relatively small with a card table. The movies are shown on a 24-inch TV screen on the wall. With my eyesight, it would not be very appealing to watch movies on that small screen, and there is nothing else to do. The room was very nice, but small. There is nothing to do but walk around the small yard. It is very nicely kept up, but there is nothing to do. The area is not particularly nice and it is expensive. The dining area is very clean and pleasant. Overall, I was very discouraged by the visit.

Provider Response

We appreciate you taking time to review us.Thank you for recognizing our staff. They are very nice and caring. Our residents really do think of them as extended family. I am not sure what area you saw but both our living room and activity rooms are nice size rooms. It is possible that you saw a couple of our smaller game rooms. We have over 87 residents and most of them do take part in our daily activities, We have activities scheduled all day long. It is possible that you toured while many residents were doing an outing as we schedule them at least once a week. Our evening movies are played on a large screen tv in our living room. We welcome you to come and tour again. I can assure you that we have very happy and well taken care of residents here at The Gardens at Park Balboa.

The Gardens at Park Balboa was a little older but cozier. They had refurbished a lot of the front area. The dining area was like a restaurant. They had a game room and a common area. The people we interacted with were fine. Everyone was very cordial.

The activity rooms at the Gardens were upstairs, and the rooms were bigger, but it was on a busy street. We just didn’t like the area. It was very nice inside except that it was older. They didn’t have lounge or lobby, so the people weren’t there. It didn’t look like a home. The people were great; we didn’t have any problem with that.

I have a tremendous problem with thefts in my room at The Gardens at Park Balboa because I'm an artist, and I have lots of expensive art supplies, pens, pencils and markers. I've had over $2000 worth of stuff taken, and I've only been reimbursed $200. As a compromise, they finally ended up giving me my own key to my room so no one else could get in. The place is alright, the food has improved with getting the master chef into feedback meetings with the population. It's really quite good now, and things were better. There's no exercise room and they have activities during the day. I'm in a studio apartment with a nice big balcony that looks out on the street but also has trees in front of it, so it's got a nice view.

My mother is at The Gardens at Park Balboa, and so far it is very accommodating. They take very good care of her and keep her busy with activities. It is a simply well run, very nice place. The thing that impresses me the most about this place is the amount of staff per patient or per resident. Usually, you will see a place with a minimal amount of staff and too many patients lacking treatment, being lost, and not being taken care of. This place is not that way at all.

The Gardens at Park Balboa could be better. It always takes time for things to get done, so I didn’t find the staff to be as fast or as responsive as I would like them to be. The service has to be better.

My mother was a resident in the memory care unit for a little over a year. Despite being notified by a staff member that my mother had a UTI, they ignored it until she developed septicemia and had trouble breathing. In the ER, I discovered that they hadn't cut her toenails in months, which shows the level of care provided. She spent a week in the hospital and was in terrible pain because of kidney damage from the septicemia. Neither the doctor nor the home told me she was in kidney failure until the facility director bluntly asked me if I'd considered hospice care. She spent the last month of her life heavily medicated and nonresponsive. There were some wonderful caregivers there, but many that were young/untrained, or simply didn't care past the paycheck. I wouldn't have bothered to write this review except that nearly two years after my mother's death, we received an email from the former director (is she back?) wanting to know why we used the word "scum" in our Yelp review. I don't see why it was necessary for her to re-open our wounds.

I recently moved my elderly mother in here and so far I could not be happier. They are taking very good care of her. The entire staff has been wonderful. I give it 4stars for now because she hasn't been there that long but I anticipate a 5 star rating.

I didn’t see many residents at The Park, and I’m looking for my aunt who is a very social person. The building itself seemed much older and not as fancy. I loved the grounds, it was beautiful, and it has a nice garden area. It’s more of an apartment style. The few residents that I saw didn’t seem as alert, talking, and aware. The rooms she showed were not as nice and fancy, and this was the same for the dining area.

I cannot thank Klara and the staff at Gardens at Park Balboa for the love and attention they showed in giving me information about moving my mom in in the near future. Lots of places to choose from but with the apartment type living it gives a great feeling of independence. I would highly suggest!

I went to visit The Gardens at Park Balboa, and it was not good. I thought it was actually very depressing and that the layout was dangerous. There were so many level changes like something would be carpet and then it would floor and then there would be stairs; you kept having to change the way you walk. I didn’t meet any staff on my tour, but it was a very depressing and dark facility. The rooms were very small and dingy.

The Gardens at Park Balboa had a combination of both independent and assisted living. The staff was really good. It was clean and nice. They had a garden and some statues. The food was pretty good, and the dining room was nice. They were a larger facility.

My mother recently passed away after a slow decline in health. She had lived at The Gardens for the past six years in relative comfort and with excellent care by the staff. We first saw that my parents needed to be in assisted living and had a long battle to convince my father to make the move. After his passing, it was a necessity. They had friends who'd lived there in the past, so were familiar with the facility. We met there, Abby Oppenheim, who graciously assisted with visiting, then processing my mother's settling into a small studio. There was room for her mementos and she could live comfortably within easy distance of the dining room. We met a number of the residents and as one can expect, found a variety of states of health and aging, but by and large, pleasant and happy people. The staff was most helpful at all times and I can only say that they were outstanding in their attention and assistance to Mom's needs. My lady-friend, a clinical dietitian with years of experience in similar facilities was immediately and favorably impressed as to the quality of the place. Late in my mother's stay, she needed to go to the secure, dementia unit, which is a part of the facility and readily accessible to visitors. This was easily done and still, most convenient. It's hard to think of anything not worthy of recommendation at The Gardens, from the administration, nursing, front office and dining room staff. I can name names throughout the staff, but rather than chance missing any, I will say that some were even more special to Mom and myself and they should know who they are! Their assistance and care made this whole experience a positive one.

There are so many events that transpired over the last year my parents lived at this facility. Please be very careful if you are considering moving your loved ones with dementia here. There was a change of Directors and everything went bad. When we originally moved my parents in, the facility had a full time RN on staff. When the RN left shortly after we moved in, Marie, (a great facility director) hired a full time LVN to take her place. Over a year ago Marie was just gone, no notification from management, when I would ask where Marie was no one could tell us, not a letter, email, nothing. The facility was without a director for over 2 months before we were notified a new Director would be joining the Gardens. Several months after they hired Dana (with no previous experience as a director of a facility) the LVN was gone. No word from management, not a letter, email, nothing. When I spoke with the director she told us that she and one of the "med techs" were capable of covering the job of the RN/LVN and that they were not going to replace anyone in the position. Neither of them are medically qualified to take the place of an LVN or an RN. While most of the med techs are wonderful and caring, many other young caregivers do not have sufficient knowledge to care for seniors with dementia in the free community or in Safe Haven. My mother began having some behavioral issues that I, her doctor and Dana were trying to sort out. Dana suddenly began forcing our hand to move my mother to Safe Haven. She cut off my ability to speak with the med techs and said I had to go through her. She never consistently followed through on communicating important information so we could evaluate how my mother’s meds were working or not. After the multitude of emotional events Dana put our family through due to her lack of support and knowledge of helping a family traverse the terrain of a loved one with Alzheimer’s, along with her inability to take responsibility, and because they no longer had an RN or LVN, we decided it was in our parents best interest to move them to another facility. We simply had lost confidence and trust in them and they wore us down. We served formal notice via email to Dana and the owner of the facility on May 1st, 2013. About a week later Dana presented my father, a 97 year old sweetheart of a man with a notice to move to Safe Haven or be Evicted. This notice went on to list out various events with my mother as the reason for the need to move. My dad, a loving, honest, and hardworking man all of his life was beside himself with fear, confusion and grief. There was no reason under the sun that anyone with any compassion would do this to a senior who didn’t have the ability to comprehend what was going on. I had already given them our 30 day notice! This broke all of our hearts to see our father in such a state of depression. The owner of this facility backed Dana all the way at every turn. When we moved my mother and father out, I realized that they had lost her wheelchair. I decided to let it go and move on. I was exhausted. My mother died two weeks ago. I was shocked to receive a bill from The Gardens for $340.00 last week for services they say they didn’t charge us for.

The front desk employees seem to be on top of things. Except one girl who seemed to have no idea about the comings and goings of residents. I felt that the places is somewhat insecure because I am never asked to sign in or out when I pick up a resident and drive them off the property. I am never asked to sign a resident in or out. One time, I was physically assaulted by a man with Alzheimer's and the front desk worker apologized, saying it happens all the time. I've been to one room, it seems like a huge dormitory. The staff seems nice enough, although I do get a sense that the staff treats residents as "non-people", or treats them as lesser than themselves.
