My wife has been a resident at A Brand New Day for six years. I couldn't ask for a better care. She has had wonderful compassionate service. I visit her daily.

My husband was a hospice patient/resident at A Brand New Day. I couldn't have asked for a better, compassionate care than he received. Everyone took excellent care of him and me while I was visiting.

Questions about A Brand New Day

What ongoing training does the staff receive in dementia care?

We have partnered with Community Care Options to take advantage of their excellent training program. All staff receive 8 hours of training annually through their program. This follows initial training of 12 hours of dementia care. In addition, we have monthly staff meetings where we share insights on the latest developments on dementia care. Staff share tips and tricks that are successful with our individual residents, as well as triggers to avoid.

How many staffers are on duty in the daytime and overnight?

We believe delivering top notch memory care requires a bigger investment in staff rather than fancy foyers. We have 3 shifts of staff 24/7. Five are on duty during the day, plus our Wellness Director and our Administrator. There are 4 in the evening and 2 between 10:30pm and 5:30am.

What programs or activities does A Brand New Day offer to keep residents engaged? How does the staff engage residents' long-term memories?

We employ a full time Activity Director who delivers a variety of activities, both in a group and one-on-one setting. Activities include physical movement, arts & crafts, cooking, photography, games and parties. We have weekly excursions to enjoy the many cuisines offered by local restaurants. Groups visit our community to sing, dance and do bible study. We have seen great success with playing music from their prime to trigger memories. Our residents also respond remarkably well to viewing pictures on the Internet and looking up their childhood homes on Google Earth using an iPad.

Who assesses residents' health and cognitive functioning? How often is that assessment repeated?

Our Executive Director is a LVN who closely observes each resident and consults with their physician and other health professionals to assess health and cognitive functioning. The assessment is repeated annually or sooner if needed when there is a change in condition.

What techniques does A Brand New Day use to support memory care residents during mealtimes?

Residents dine together in small groups based on compatibility. Staff sit with those who need prompting or assistance with eating. We serve nutritionally balanced meals based on a carefully crafted menu which offers a variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables and plus proteins prepared by our cook who has been with us for 9+ years. Recognizing that resident's appetites and thirst may no longer be robust, we encourage beverages throughout the day and provide high quality protein/low sugar supplement drinks. We accommodate dietary restriction and cater to their food preferences. Finally, we have fun with food and enjoy ice cream, sweets and home-bakes goodies.

How does A Brand New Day keep residents' families informed about their loved ones' health?

Over the years, we realize there are many different approaches that families appreciate depending on their location, availability and preferences. We establish communications protocol as part of the move-in process. We welcome family members to visit and participate in activities as often as they like. Some check in with us on a daily or weekly basis via phone. We also use more modern forms of communication such as email, texting and Facetime for those who are not in the vicinity. Family members are welcome to call and we bring the cordless phone to wherever the resident is at the time. We of course will place an immediate call if there is a health or any other kind of emergency. Our philosophy is that there should be no surprises - family members are well informed of what is going on.

Describe the neighborhood around A Brand New Day. Is it located in a residential neighborhood, a business district, a rural setting, or other type of locale?

We are located in a quiet neighborhood within city limits on a cul de sac with very little traffic. Our location is close to the Veteran's clinic as well as many shops, restaurants and medical offices.

Is A Brand New Day affiliated with a hospital if more care is needed?

Residents may choose the hospital the prefer for their care. We are licensed to have any of the hospice agencies in our area deliver care for our residents, so it is rare that some one must be relocated in the course of aging.
