I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident
My mother is in Pittsburg Care Center. The care is going OK. It's been a really good experience. The staff is really good. I received one meal and it looked good. The dietitian came to see us the first day we were there. They have bingo. They had some orientation going on and everybody was in the multipurpose room/cafeteria. They have buses. It looks OK in the interior. The outside looks so nondescript. You can barely figure out where the entrance is. When we first got there, the two CNAs who helped us were so nice and helpful. My mom wanted to get two Christmas cards for two of the staff members because they were so nice. I have no complaints about the staff. She's in a room with four people and that works out. There's a high school two blocks away and when the high school gets out, it's a virtual parking lot. If they go to visit, plan to leave before the high school gets out at 2:30. It's just a lot of traffic around that time.

My grandmother was admitted here for short term rehab. She quickly got better and was ready to go home but the Administration would not release her even with the doctor's order. She ended up staying there for 70 days, and got depressed and disoriented. It took me having to call Christine, the Administrator herself and demand that my grandmother be discharged. This facility, in my opinion, keeps their patient for rehab longer than they should. They will milk the system and use up the whole 100 days allowed by Medicare and Medical even if the patient does not need it. They are unethical and not pro active in planning the patient's discharge early on. Anyone who wishes to admit their loved ones here should be pro active in discharge planning from day one. Talk to the admitting Doctor, the Social Worker, and the Director of Nursing and let them know of your expectations. Do not let them dictate to you how long the resident should stay. If the resident had met her goal, it is always best for the resident to return home.

Friend or relative of resident
My friend, Virginia, spent several months at the Pittsburg Care Center after she fell and broke her leg. I visited her two or three times a week, and was very impressed with the quality of her care. The facility was always clean and fresh smelling. The staff was pleasant and seemed happy with their jobs. Once when I was there early, the cook came in and asked the new arrivals their preferences--favorite and least favorite foods. When I asked Virginia why, she said that if someone's ""least favorite"" was on the menu, she would substitute one of their ""favorites."" Those are the basics. They also had: cooking, music and craft classes. They had bingo day and ""game day,"" and popcorn and hot dog day. When I talk with Virginia now about it, she actually sounds a little nostalgic. In my opinion, this is what assisted living SHOULD be.
