I visited this facility

When I walked into Gladding Ridge Assisted Living & Memory Care Community, I was impressed with the cleanliness and the ambiance of the whole front part of it. Everything was immaculate. The staff was masked and very helpful. I only waited one minute to make an appointment. I was taken to a private room where we discussed things. I was given a tour of the whole place and we discussed pricing. I found out, however, that they do not accept people that cannot move or get out of a bed. Deborah, the marketing director, was very, very friendly. I could see she loved her job. Everybody I met along the way seemed to be happy there. It's a very nice place, but my husband needs more care than what they give. Everything was spacious. I saw the dining room and the tables were set real nice with flowers. I saw the theater. I saw four different models of rooms and they were all well appointed with the right decorations. I was shown one where someone could go in with a wheelchair, specifically wheelchair bound. I saw people reading in their rooms, and everybody seemed to be happy. They had a group playing cards in one area. I didn't see anything negative about the whole thing. I was very happy to go there. I did not see one thing out of place. The smell was wonderful. It wasn't masked with chocolate chip cookies as some of them are.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Do not send your loved one here. We did our research and toured many homes. Gladding Ridge became top of our list because of the promised hands-on approach to care. Because my mom was diagnosed with dementia at a young age it is difficult to predict the progression of the disease. We were in search of a place that would meet her where she was at (confused, sun-downing, etc) and work with the family through the progression of the disease. Gladding Ridged promised all of this and more. We were determined to only move my mom once, so we made sure to ask what it would take for them to evict a resident. When asked they acted shocked and said that they would never evict someone. My mom was at Gladding Ridge for 2 months before she was evicted. When she entered Gladding Ridge, she was fairly independent and did not need incontinence care. When she left Gladding Ridge, due to the neglect and trauma she suffered in their care, she was put on hospice and could no longer function without assistance. This is what we noticed while she was there: She was always alone. We would go to visit and find her roaming the halls alone and confused. We never witnessed 1:1 care. She was neglected. My mom would walk around barefoot (inside and out). We found feces all around her room and sometimes on her hands and face. Her medical needs went untreated. My mother’s disease progressed quickly while at GR. She went from being able to use the restroom on her own to needing full incontinence care within two weeks. She became combative and agitated. GR thought that the cause of the sudden change of behavior was a UTI and informed us that they would test for one. 10 days later, my mother was in the ER for combativeness. While at the ER we learned that GR never obtained a urine sample and that she did, indeed, have a UTI. She was treated as if she was doing something wrong. When we would visit we would be met with caregivers complaining about my mom and how difficult she is. There was no empathy, only frustration and exhaustion. The head caregiver came in at one point slamming my moms drawers talking about how they can’t handle her combativeness. She had bruises all up and down her arms. The assumption is that they are from being restrained while being changed When we called to discuss a care plan for my mom GR gave us a 30-day eviction due to “behaviors”. They were evicting my mom for being combative and for being difficult to change. We were ok with the eviction, since we did not want our mother in their care any longer, but it was still shocking to learn that they would indeed evict a resident, and they would use behavior brought on by dementia, as the rational. A few days later my mom went to the ER due to swelling in her limbs and a cough. We learned that she contracted Sepsis/a blood infection under GR’s care. When we checked in with GR about a plan for her to return, we learned that she would not be welcomed back. Our 30-day eviction went from 30 days to 3 days with nowhere to go. This action was shockingly inhumane, even for GR. My mom is in a new home and is being treated with care, respect, and empathy. She is doing much better than she was while in the care of GR. Unfortunately, the trauma of moving multiple times and two long stints in the ER have taken an irreparable toll on my mother’s health. I am hoping that this review helps in ensuring others do not make the same mistake.

My father will be moving into Gladding Ridge Assisted Living and Memory Care Community. We like the price. They were having a special and so it was $1000 a month cheaper than most of the other places we looked at. We looked at also the cleanliness and they were able to provide some furniture which the other ones were not. It was a small facility which I thought he would be more comfortable in. It only has 59 apartments. They have both assisted living and memory care. The staff was very good.

Gladding Ridge Assisted Living was a very nice place. It's just very, very expensive. The one who toured us was nice enough, but he did not inform me of the intake fee of $1500. I found that out when I was reading through the materials. I don't think he was very forthcoming as far as all of the fees upfront that would be needed. They had very large rooms. It looked very clean, and it didn't smell. They just need to be upfront with all of the cost. They had a barbershop and a beauty salon. It felt homey. They have no furniture in the rooms, so you bring your own furniture in with pictures and whatever you want.

Provider Response

Hello and thank you for visiting Gladding Ridge! I'm so happy that you were pleased overall with our community. We pride ourselves in our "homey" atmosphere and it's a pleasure to know that our visitors can capture that same feeling. My most sincere apologies for the lack of communication regarding our community fee. We strive to provide a positive experience to all who enter our building; I regret this was not the case with your tour. Thank you for bringing this matter to my attention so I can better serve future prospective residents and those caring for them. With reference to the financial side of Gladding Ridge, I encourage you to inquire into the costs of other Assisted Living and Memory Care facilities in Placer and neighboring counties. I am confident that you will discover that our costs are much lower or at least, very competitive; including the initial community fee. Thank you for your interest in Gladding Ridge. We hope to see you again soon!

My mother lived here for the last two years of her life. The staff members were wonderfully cheerful, caring and attentive, from the managers, to the caregivers, to the special people who did her laundry and cleaned her room. The workers in the dining room provided delicious, healthy, full course meals at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. A selection of entrees, beverages, and desserts was offered. Exercise classes, crafts, happy hour, musical entertainment, excursions, and transportation to medical appointments were all provided. I could not have asked for a better place for my mother when I myself was unable to provide the level of assisted care she required. I found gladding ridge to be more affordable than other care facilities in the area.

Gladding Ridge was lovely, looked comforting and welcoming, and the staff was very receptive. The dining area was adequate and very nice, but it was not affordable. They have a beauty shop and a little theater.

Gladding Ridge is a depressing place. The staff is wonderful and has put up with a lot, but they're horribly lacking in staff members. My mother has fallen five times in time months, so who's watching her? They have no activities for memory care, but they have games for the residents, and they take them on outings once a week to the grocery store or to dinner. There's mainly bingo and they have music sometimes, but as far as activities, they have none. There's no staff members at night that they can find.

The staff at Gladding Ridge Assisted Living was very friendly and helpful. It was a very nice visit. There were two rooms available that were both very nice and well kept. The house was big, light, and full of nice air. It really looked like a nice place to live.

I read a less than positive review and would like to respond. My mother has been at Gladding Ridge since 2014. I have not met a single employee that does not genuinely care about the residents. She recently fell and broke her hip. She had surgery and rehab before returning. Each time I went to the facility during her absence I was stopped and asked about her and when she would be coming back because they missed her. The night before her return I called to advise that a hospital bed was being delivered. When I explained, the young lady expressed pleasure. As we were hanging up, I heard her say, excitedly, "Madge is coming back!" There was such happiness in her voice. I know that the staff there loves my mom and cares for her in a way that i am not able to. When she was at the skilled nursing center, I could hardly wait for her to be discharged. The staff was impersonal and was very institutional. Gladding Ridge is an older building but they are doing an excellent job of updating it. The food is good and is prepared appropriately for each residents needs. I love the staff and I cannot express how grateful I am to have them to care for my mom.

Gladding Ridge is fine. It is clean and organized. There is a place for puzzle, bingo and there is an art room. My mother-in-law is staying there. The care that she receives is very good, but a little over protective. They need to improve on their communications. They leave a message for me, but when I call back to follow-up, nobody seems to know why I am calling. The room is very comfortable and large. The staff is attentive and friendly.

I visited this facility

We visited Gladding Ridge Assisted Living & Memory Care, but it wasn’t to my mom’s liking because it was too small. I liked that it was in the same town that I lived in. The facility was older and the rooms weren’t very homey-looking and more like a hotel. It wasn’t something that my mom felt really happy about. It was clean and nice, but the facility itself and some of the tenants were not quite like her. Most of them were in wheelchairs and walkers and she was pretty active. She drives herself, but she was just looking for somewhere to have a little assistance with some minor things. It just seemed like a little too boring there for Mom. However, the staff was very helpful. She even offered to give us lunch, but Mom made her decision that as soon as she saw the room. The person that was running it was the one who took us on a tour, and she was very nice, very informative, and very professional.

I visited this facility

Gladding Ridge was a multi-story facility that had more residents than the other places I visited. Gary, my friend, would have been better off at this place because of the social aspect, but I wasn't sure if he would have been watched closely and monitored so well. When I looked at the menu there, I wondered whether the food would have been good for someone like him with diabetes, unless there was also a sugar-free menu, but it didn't look like it when we were there. There was an elevator. His room would have been upstairs at the far end of the building. They had activities because they had more residents. It looked like there were some ladies playing cards at a table. The building was old, and so was the carpeting, but it looked clean. However, the building was being renovated, and double glazed windows had been put in. I thought the facility had good cleanliness. The staff was very happy and worked as a team. The people living there introduced themselves. They were smiling and friendly, and that's what drew my attention more than anything.

I visited this facility

Gladding Ridge was very depressing, felt more like a nursing home, and smelled a little bit. Residents were sitting around in the parking lot. The rooms were very big but very convalescent. The staff was great. They had bingo.

Provider Response

I am glad you took the time to come and visit Gladding Ridge and to write a review. Gladding Ridge is an older building that does not have a grand entry, high ceilings or big chandeliers. What we do have, and was mentioned in the review, is great staff who really do care about the residents that are served at Gladding Ridge. We really do want our residents to be happy and as independent as possible, we encourage the residents to treat Gladding Ridge as they would their home, as that is what it is, their home. Smells come and go and I would hope that if you were to come back for another visit the smell would be gone. Our caregivers and housekeeping quickly respond to residents needs when an accident happens, and they do happen. Again, thanks for the review and for visiting Gladding Ridge

I am a friend or relative of resident

My mother was a resident at Villa Del Rey in there memory care area from May 2015 until her passing in Oct. 2015. The care she received was exceptional. The staff at Villa Del Rey became like family to my mother, brother and I. Everyone there, med techs, caregivers, activities assistant, house keeping, laundry aid, kitchen staff, receptionist and all the office staff were wonderful to my mom and always took the time to talk to the residents and help them in anyway needed. I highly recommend Villa Del Rey.

MY mom was here for year before she passed. She had altzheimers. The staff there was so patient and kind with her. They made her feel calm. And they were very attentive. On her final days they allowed us to stay with her 24 hrs a day and we're always asking if there was anything they could to help us be more comfortable. They not only cared for mom but for us as well. This may not be "top of the line" facility as far as size, or fancy but they are top of line where it counts and that was how they cared for my mom. I will always be so grateful for them.

I am very impressed with the Villa Del Rey Manor. The room we got for my mother is divided. One section is her bedroom, and the other section is set up like a living room and a little dinette. It has a refrigerator, a microwave, and a nice safe bathroom. They have lots of activities like bingo, painting, and chair exercises. The staff is impressive, and I have not run into anybody that is not just as sweet as can be.

Villa Del Rey Assisted Living Community is very clean, very modern, and up-to-date. They provide basic laundry and room cleaning with some additional charge to take care of things like my friend's medication and blood pressure, temperature, and weight. The people taking care of them seem to be fine. I don't have any problems with them. The rooms are very clean.

I visited this facility

We visited Villa Del Rey. It's close and conveniently located for us. It's near everything. We were all set to take my sister-in-law into that facility. Unfortunately, she died before she moved in. This facility was very good. Even my sister-in-law, who died, thought it was great. She was looking forward to going there. The place was very clean and very well organized. Its fee wasn't too bad. Considering the fees from other places, their price was reasonable. They did have very good programs for anybody. They even have trips for the people, e.g., shopping. Their staff's attitude was great. They were really helpful. They're interested in their job and interested in looking after the handicapped. Their program was pretty good. I would recommend this facility by all means.
