What Are Assisted Living Rooms Like?
Rooms in an assisted living community can range in size from cozy private or shared bedrooms up to spacious two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartments complete with kitchenettes, multiple closets, and either a balcony or patio. The type of room varies widely depending on the facility, location and cost.
In this guide, you’ll learn what assisted living rooms are like in both small home-style facilities, and larger, modern assisted living communities. We’ve provided a general overview of the most common assisted living room types, as well as what kinds of amenities are usually included in these rooms.
Assisted Living Rooms
In many smaller, home-like assisted living facilities, it’s common to find private and semiprivate, or shared, bedrooms that look and feel much like a bedroom in a typical family home.
These bedrooms often come furnished with a twin bed, bedside table and dresser for each resident. There’s usually an en suite bathroom with a vanity, raised toilet and roll-in shower, as well as at least one closet.
Many assisted living rooms are equipped with a telephone jack and a cable television outlet, and there may also be an armchair or other seating.
Assisted Living Suites
Apartment-style suites are the most popular type of accommodation in assisted living communities with 20 or more residents. Some facilities offer only single-occupancy studio suites, although many assisted living communities have a range of suite sizes that include studios, one-bedroom units, and two-bedroom, two-bath apartments called companion suites.
These suites may be furnished, partially furnished, or unfurnished, and they often include a kitchenette with a sink, microwave and small refrigerator. There’s usually at least one closet, a private bathroom with a roll-in shower stall and a small seating area with space for an armchair or love seat.
Other common features you may find in assisted living suites include:
- Individual climate controls
- Emergency call buttons in bathroom and at the bedside
- Patio or balcony access
- Cable television and phone jacks
- Wi-Fi service
- Keyless locks
