What to Consider About Assisted Living in Chesapeake

Chesapeake, Virginia is located in the Newport News / Virginia Beach metropolitan area and along the border of North Carolina and is the third most populated city in the state. It’s a diverse city, with much of its metropolitan area taken up by the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. Less than ten percent of the population is over 60 years of age and there are 44 assisted living facilities in the area to serve them. These ALFs are all licensed and regulated by the Virginia Department of Social Services, as they are not nursing homes, which are regulated by the Virginia Department of Health.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Chesapeake

  • The annual weather in Chesapeake, Virginia is comfortable for about half of the year, with an average of 205 sunny days. Highs in July rise to the high 80s, while January lows are regularly at or below freezing. Chesapeake also averages about 5 inches of snow per year, which is well below the national average but more than most cities on the coast receive.
  • Despite being a large city in Virginia and part of a larger metropolitan area, Chesapeake has very good air quality throughout the year. This is due to the nature surrounding it, from the aforementioned Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge to the nearby Atlantic Ocean.
  • According to Sperlings Best Places scale, Chesapeake has a higher cost of living at 109.5 than the state of Virginia at 107 and the national average of 100. Much of this has to do with the cost of housing at $255,600, which is just slightly higher than the state mean of $252,700. Other necessities like groceries (96.8), health care (99) and utilities (106) are either just above or just below the state and national averages.
  • The crime rate in Chesapeake is quite high at 4.1 violent crimes per 1000 residents, almost double the state average at 2.1 and even slightly higher than the national mean of 4.0. It is especially noticeable when it comes to violent crime, making Chesapeake only safer than about 19 percent of cities in the United States.
  • I-Ride is a service that exists in the greater Chesapeake area, providing rides for seniors over 60 to doctor’s appointments and other stops on fixed routes in the area. Senior riders will pay very low, discounted rates compared to other passengers for this service.
  • The Chesapeake area is home to world-class medical facilities, including Chesapeake Regional Healthcare, in the event of medical emergencies or illness.
