Jan: "I thought that the people in Colonial Oaks at Katy are very friendly and helpful, and they seem very caring. They wanted to get my dad involved right away, and the staff is very gracious to the residents. While we were moving him in they served us lunch. I like the wide open spaces as you enter. It has two courtyards, and it's bright, and very nice. They have activities for the residents, he played bingo yesterday, they have bible studies every week, and they take them on tr... (read more)

william.t: "My mother and dad were residents of the assisted living facility and had to move out. The room was adequate, but had to point out dust on the air vents. My mom has asthma and had really terrible flare ups of asthma because of this. Their food was terrible. Cold for every meal. Staff said that residents can ask the food to be microwaved to hear up, but why should they have to ask? I joined my parents for a meal and the food was cold, so it is not an unfounded complaint ... Like many great ideas, the concept for Evergreen Cottages Assisted Living began in the kitchen. Family and friends had gathered for dinner. The conversation flowing from the kitchen to the great room ultimately turned to the challenges of getting older and the prevalence of Alzheimer’s and other dementias. The inevitable questions came about, ‘‘What would Mom or Dad want?” “What would we want for them?” “What would we want for ourselves?” The conversation and answers to t... (read more)

Gail: "The people at The Legacy at Falcon Point took care of my husband. He didn't complain about anybody. Towards the end, he was getting to know people. He wasn't there that long before he passed.. He was in assisted living. His room was very nice; it was quite satisfactory. I rate it a four only because I was kind of upset that they took all of his medications and destroyed them without even consulting me about it. I didn't like that. I didn't have that much association with the... (read more)

What to Consider About Assisted Living in Katy

Nobody knows who first planted the sugar cane that grows like a weed around Katy, Texas, but seniors on a hike can cut a stalk of it and have something sweet to chew on while they're enjoying the sunny days in Katy. This suburb of Houston is home to 41 assisted living communities, where aging citizens get help performing their activities of daily living (ADLs). These include bathing, meal prep and taking some medications, in addition to 24-hour emergency response for falls or medical issues.

In Katy, and in all of Texas, assisted living facilities are called residential care facilities. They are overseen by the Texas Department of Health and Human Services, which conducts regular inspections for living conditions and quality of care issues.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Katy

  • Katy is a suburb of Houston, and the two cities share much of their weather. Summer highs in Katy average 93 degrees Fahrenheit, while winter lows dip to 43 degrees Fahrenheit. The cool air of Katy's winters can be an issue for seniors with COPD or asthma, so it helps to have a space heater and humidifier in the bedroom.

  • Cost of living in Katy is manageable for most seniors. Aging citizens who shop for their own groceries pay an average of just 84 percent the national rate, while health care here costs around 97 percent what it does elsewhere in the country.

  • There's no income tax in Texas, and seniors on a fixed income get a break on their SSI, Social Security and earnings from 401(k)s. The state does impose a sales tax that runs between 6.25 and 8.25 percent, however, and aging citizens who still drive must pay 20 cents a gallon for the state gas tax.

  • Crime in Katy, TX, is very close to national averages for similar categories. While property crime and theft are an issue here — albeit less of an issue for seniors in assisted living communities — violent crime rates are generally low.

  • Katy Area Ride Service offers rides to area seniors who need a lift into town or over to the larger Houston area nearby. Transfers to other services are available, and seniors over 60 qualify for discount fares on most rides. This service is intended for adults with challenged mobility, but wheelchair access is not guaranteed. It's best to call ahead.

  • The Katy area is home to world-class medical facilities, including Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital, in the event of medical emergencies or illness.
