The 10 Best Assisted Living Facilities in Poland, OH for 2024

Poland is a village on the southeastern edge of Youngstown. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2019 estimate, it has 2,378 residents, forming part of Mahoning County’s 228,614 population, 21.4% of whom are aged 65 and over. Its above-average senior population is a sign that older residents enjoy the village’s low cost of living, numerous curb-to-curb transportation services and very low rates of crime. Other attractions include the markets that pepper Mahoning Valley, such as The Amish Market and Countryside Farm Market, both renowned for the high quality of their fresh produce.

Poland’s below-average cost of living extends to its assisted living fees, which average at $4,038 per month, about $312 less than what the typical Ohioan pays. Assisted living offers an alternative to seniors who need daily support in their homes but don’t want to lose their independence. Professional caregivers ensure residents get the correct dosage of medications on time, housekeepers keep rooms clean and tidy and chefs prepare quality meals three times per day.

The remainder of this guide considers the advantages and disadvantages of living in Poland and the costs of various types of senior care. It also lists some useful resources for seniors.

What to Consider About Assisted Living in Poland

Residential care facilities, which include assisted living, are regulated by the Ohio Department of Health. The department has the authority to issue a license to those that meet the required standards and remove it from those that don’t. This involves the department and fire marshall making at least one unannounced inspection every 15 months to ensure facilities are compliant.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Poland

  • According to Sperling’s Best Places, Poland’s average cost of living index is 81, making the city a more affordable location than average for the state and the country. Of particular interest to seniors considering assisted living are the below-average indices for health care and transportation costs, averaging at 82.9 and 84.7, respectively.
  • Despite its compact size, Poland is within minutes of several medical facilities, including the Heart and Vascular Institute and the Vibra Hospital of Mahoning Valley. Additionally, seniors only have a short journey to Youngstown’s many excellent hospitals. Poland and its neighboring communities also boast 101 Medicare-registered physicians working in multiple fields, ensuring seniors have greater choice in who handles their health care needs.
  • As with most locations in this part of the country, Poland’s climate can be challenging at times. Winter temperatures routinely hover around 18 degrees and snow falls more often than average. There are also fewer sunny days. But it’s not all bad news. Summer months are very pleasant, with temperatures averaging 84 degrees and the rainfall is responsible for the magnificent Lake Hamilton and Poland Municipal Forest that bookend the village.
  • Poland’s seniors have several options for easily getting around Mahoning County and neighboring communities. Easterseals is a nonprofit organization that operates a door-to-door transportation service for Mahoning and Turnbull County residents aged 60 and over. Trips are free (although a $2.50 donation per trip is welcomed) and can be for any purpose. Alternatively, Countywide, a low-cost shared-ride service, is available to seniors unable to use the fixed-route service. However, trips must be within Mahoning County.
  • Although all crime is bad, Poland’s very low crime rates are enviable. Violent crime is so infrequent it registers as zero in data published by Neighborhood Scout. Property crime does register, but at a rate of 1 in 396, it’s very low when compared to the state average of 1 in 49, which is itself slightly below the national average.

Paying for Assisted Living in Poland
