The 10 Best Assisted Living Facilities in Akron, OH for 2024

Akron is a vibrant community that’s home to Cuyahoga Valley National Park, the 35-acre Akron Zoo and a thriving arts and culture scene. It has nearly 200,000 residents, about 30,000 of whom are aged 65 and over, supporting a range of social opportunities and access to community-based services for retirees. The city is among the cheapest places in the nation to live, enabling older adults to maintain a comfortable standard of living, and amenities, such as high-performing hospitals and reliable public transportation, make it an attractive option for active retirees.

For older adults who need help with some daily living activities and want to be free from the hassles and financial burdens of homeownership, assisted living is a convenient option that balances independence and assistance. These facilities offer housing, meals and snacks, social and recreational programs, personal care and housekeeping and maintenance services. Monthly rates vary depending on factors, such as the size of residents’ rooms or apartments and whether it has amenities, such as pools and multiple dining options, but the Genworth 2020 Cost of Care Survey reports that on average, residents in Akron pay $4,875 per month for this type of care.

This guide provides more details on senior care costs in Akron, highlights the benefits of living here and outlines local programs and organizations that serve seniors.

What to Consider About Assisted Living in Akron

Assisted living facilities in Akron are officially called residential care communities and are licensed and monitored by the Ohio Department of Health. This department sets regulations governing facilities’ scope of care, staffing and staff training requirements and intake and discharge procedures. It enforces regulations through an initial licensing process and regular visits and by investigating reports of noncompliance.
