Sherrey: "Orchard Heights has been fine. They have games, music, and rides outside of the area. She's had physical therapy and gets her hair done there. The place is very clean and laid out well. The rooms were nice and laid out well. It would be nice though if they had an area where the elderly can walk to, like a courtyard, without being escorted. They take them to doctors' appointments. She likes the food."

Alphonse: "Dad was a resident for 8 years, and always treated with respect and kindness.. Everyone knew his name and greeted him. The administrative staff were so helpful and nursing staff were honest, attentive and caring. They were his angels and watched over him, We would joke that they knew more about him than his family. Dad also enjoyed the food and happy hour! The activity director is super and very engaging. She pays special attention to the interests of the residents an... (read more)

Dan : " I wanted to take a moment to extend my thanks to the staff at Eden Heights in West Seneca. My mother, Barbara, recently transition to a full-time nursing facility but spent time with you folks. She often told me how fond she was of everyone who works there, and how grateful she was for all you did for her. She referred to you as "her family." The work you do can be difficult and demanding. Polkadot: "I love this place. My mother in law was here for 2 years before she had to be placed elsewhere for medical reasons. The staff is wonderful. The meals were healthy. The building is older but clean and well maintained. I felt that she received the best care and attention possible. We would drive from out of state without any notice several times a year to visit and always found this home having the highest standard of care possible. "

MemaD: "I drop in unannounced 3-4 times a week. Staff always very friendly and my relative loves the food there. There is a variety of activities for residents to participate in. Rooms are neat and clean with a slip up once in a while but nothing horrible. Attempts to keep odor free are successful about 75 percent of the time but considering what the facility is, I find this to be an impossibility to accomplish 100 percent of the time. The med staff is right on the ball with th... (read more)

What to Consider About Assisted Living in Orchard Park

Orchard Park is located 14 miles southeast of Buffalo, New York, not far from the iconic Niagra Falls. Though 19.4 percent of Orchard Park's population is older than 65, there are only three assisted living facilities in the city and nearby areas. Assisted living facilities are known as adult care facilities (ACFs) in New York, and they are regulated by the New York State Department of Health. There are three types of ACFs that are licensed by the state, including adult homes and enriched housing programs.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Orchard Park

  • The Orchard Park area has few facilities from which to choose in the event of a medical emergency or illness, with the nearest major hospital located in Buffalo.

  • Orchard Park has an array of community resources for seniors, including the Senior Center, an organization that provides physical activities like tai chi and art classes.

  • Winters are harsh in Orchard Park, as they are in the rest of Upstate New York, with temperatures dropping below 10 degrees Fahrenheit in the coldest months. Orchard Park also experiences more than quadruple the amount of snow than the rest of the United States. Seniors who enjoy the sunshine or travel often should take this into consideration.

    • Overall, Orchard Park's cost of living is approximately equal to the rest of the United States and is 20 percent cheaper than New York. However, the average cost of health care and groceries is lower than the state and national median, so seniors shouldn't have a problem finding affordable options.

    • Orchard Park experiences only half the amount of violent crimes that the rest of the United States does, with a score of 18 as opposed to the nation's 31. Property crime is 22 percent lower than in other areas of the United States. Such low rates might suggest Orchard Park is an incredibly safe option for seniors.

    • With a score of 83, the air quality in Orchard Park is 25 percent better than the national average. Because there are less harmful materials in the air, Orchard Park could be ideal for seniors who have asthma or other lung conditions.
