What to Consider About Assisted Living in Annapolis

Ultimate responsibility for ensuring standards are maintained in assisted living facilities falls to the Maryland Department of Health. The practical element of the work is conducted by the Office of Health Care Quality, which has the power to issue licenses to facilities and remove them if they fail to provide the level of care demanded.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Annapolis

  • Sperling’s Best Places’ cost of living indices is based on a national average of 100. Annapolis is 125.6, while the state average is 113. The primary driver for the city’s cost of living is housing, although grocery and utility averages are also above the U.S. averages. However, health care and transportation costs are below average, which can be particularly beneficial to seniors in assisted living facilities.
  • The temperate climate in Annapolis assures seniors of four distinct seasons. January is the coldest month, with lows dropping to 29 degrees Fahrenheit. The hottest month is July, where highs often reach 89 degrees. Seniors can expect about nine inches of snowfall annually, mostly in January.
  • According to Neighborhood Scout, the chances of becoming a victim of violent crime in Annapolis is 1 in 156, compared to 1 in 220 for the state. Although this is concerning, it’s worth remembering that seniors are least likely to be involved in violent crimes, which tend to be committed by and against younger age groups. Although property crime figures are also higher, the difference is not so wide, with Annapolis coming in at 1 in 42 and Maryland 1 in 51. No area is crime-free, but some are safer than others. In Annapolis, these neighborhoods tend to be concentrated nearer Chesapeake Bay and South River Manor.
  • The air and water quality in Annapolis are average, according to Sperling’s Best Places. The city’s air quality equals the national average of 58 and the national water quality average of 55. However, when comparing the city’s focus on cleaning up contaminated land as part of the EPA’s Superfund project, Annapolis scores 91, while the national average is 87.
  • The health of the city’s seniors is in the capable hands of numerous Medicare registered physicians and well-regarded hospitals, such as the Anne Arundel Medical Center, and John Hopkins Hospital, which is less than 40 minutes away in Baltimore.
