How to Pay for Assisted Living in Tallahassee

Before choosing an assisted living community in Tallahassee, it’s important to understand the payment options available. For many seniors, using a mix of government benefits and private funds is necessary for covering monthly fees.

  • Medicaid: Florida Medicaid offers the Long-term Care Managed Care Program, which covers personal care services, meals, medication administration and housekeeping in a residential care setting. This program accepts those aged 65 and over who need a nursing home level of care but can receive necessary services in assisted living.
  • Medicare: Medicare brings down monthly care costs for assisted living residents by paying for medically necessary services. Although it doesn’t pay for custodial care or housing expenses, it covers skilled nursing services, rehabilitative therapy, medical monitoring and medication administration.
  • VA Benefits: Qualified former service members can use funding through several VA programs to cover some of their assisted living expenses, including Aid and Attendance benefits and the VA Health Care for Elderly Veterans program’s Geriatrics and Extended Care program.

Private payments: Assisted living residents use private funds to pay for remaining expenses after using state, federal and VA programs. Private funds can come from multiple sources, including money from selling or renting out a home, retirement accounts and monthly Social Security or pension income.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Tallahassee

Florida's Medicaid Long-term Care (MLTC) and Assistive Care Services programs can help qualified seniors pay for the cost of services at an assisted living facility. Neither program covers room and board fees, but the MLTC plan does negotiate those rates with providers.

Seniors receiving Federal SSI benefits can also take advantage of Florida's optional state supplementation to help with long-term care costs.
