What techniques does Wellington Woods Memory Care use to support memory care residents during mealtimes?

Accepted Answer

Residents will be served delicious and nutritious meals planned by a Registered Dietician.  The meals will be prepared to the consistency ordered by a physician (regular, mechanical soft, pureed, finger foods, etc.) and will be served on bright and colorful dinnerware, which has been proven to increase resident's appetite and consumption.  The Executive Chef is a Certified Dietary Manager, ServSafe Certified, and will ensure that each resident's likes and dislikes are observed.  Staff members will be available during meals to ensure that residents are eating and drinking.  If a resident needs verbal cues or encouragement to get started on her meal, staff members will be present to do so.  If a resident needs physical cuing to help get started on a meal, staff members will use the hand-over-hand feeding technique.

How many staffers are on duty in the daytime and overnight?

Accepted Answer

There shall be no less than 2 staff members at any given time.  Mon-Fri during normal office hours, the Administrator, Director of Nursing, Executive Chef, Life Enrichment Director, and Nursing Assistants will be present.  Mon-Fri during evenings and nights, no less than 2 nursing assistants will be present with the Director of Nursing being on call, as well as a RN consultant.  Weekend staffing will consist of nursing assistants, nurses, and dietary personnel being present.  All staff members are universal workers and may assist with housekeeping, laundry, activities, etc.

Is Wellington Woods Memory Care affiliated with a hospital if more care is needed?

Accepted Answer

Each resident (or responsible party) has the option to use the local hospital of their choice.  However, in an emergency situation, the ambulance will most likely go to the hospital closest to the facility.  Nearby hospitals include: Baptist Health Medical Center, UAMS Medical Center, CHI-St. Vincent's Medical Center, AR Heart Hospital, VA Hospital.  In the event that a geriatric psychiatric facility is needed, other hospitals throughout AR may be considered depending on availability.

Who assesses residents' health and cognitive functioning? How often is that assessment repeated?

Accepted Answer

Residents' health and cognitive functioning will be assessed prior to admission using recent medical records from physician visits and/or hospital visits to determine eligibility for admission.  Upon admission, residents will be assessed by the Director of Nursing and/or RN Consultant and/or LPNs.  Reassessments will be repeated on a quarterly and as needed basis in order to ensure that the plan of care is appropriate for each resident.

Accepted Answer

We are nestled on the edge of the Villages of Wellington subdivision in the Chenal area of West Little Rock.  This setting is perfect for a memory care facility when compared to other facilities that might be located in the middle of a noisy city with unneeded auditory and visual stimuli.  Our small size, homelike environment, and large, serene courtyard make this facility stand apart from others.

What ongoing training does the staff receive in dementia care?

Accepted Answer

All staff members must complete a training program consisting of over 30 hours of dementia care, long term care, life safety, infection control, and other topics.  Dementia care training occurs on an on-going basis including resources such as the Administrator who is a Certified Dementia Practitioner, Teepa Snow videos, Medline University, the Arkansas Health Care Association, Alzheimer's Association, and others.

What programs or activities does Wellington Woods Memory Care offer to keep residents engaged? How does the staff engage residents' long-term memories?

Accepted Answer

Resident activities are developed and planned by a Certified Activity Director with decades of experience working with long term care residents including those with dementia.  Individualized activities will be available for residents depending on their level of cognition, interests, etc.  Group activities will be available daily as well as self-directed activities.  The variety of activities include: chair exercises, walking exercises, balloon toss, discussions of "This Day in History", art (adult coloring, watercolors, etc.), coffee socials, reminiscing discussions, classic TV shows and movies, music and singing, pet therapy visits, bingo, sorting activities, crossword puzzles, cooking activities (mixing batter for muffins/cookies/cakes, making small pizzas, homemade ice cream), card games, bowling, horseshoes, cornhole, and much more!  Music groups, church groups, elementary schools, etc. may visit as well.  We have many reminiscing type activities to keep residents engaged.

How does Wellington Woods Memory Care keep residents' families informed about their loved ones' health?

Accepted Answer

Residents' family members (responsible parties) will be contacted with any change of conditions (illnesses, general decline, sudden cognition changes) and will be contacted any time there is an incident or accident (examples: fall, skin tear, resident-to-resident altercation, etc.).  Facility staff will also strive to have a quarterly or as needed care plan meeting to discuss your loved one's general health condition.  Family members listed on the resident's facesheet may call for updates on their loved ones at any time.
