Good Samaritan Society - Prescott Village

My husband and I live in Good Samaritan Society-Prescott Village. It is an excellent place to live and we like every part of it. We have all kinds of activities that are going on. We have exercise classes, dinners and speakers, a pool room, a library, and a clubhouse. We are very, very pleased with our casita. We have housekeeping that comes every two weeks. We do our own cooking, but we can eat in the dining room and there's a charge for that. Maintenance is excellent. We also have a library and different activity areas. We have jigsaw puzzles set up in one room, a chapel, and a little store where you can buy cards and little gifts.

We live in a Good Samaritan Society - Prescott Village casita. We've been here for five years now. I like the people that run it (they're very accommodating) and the facility itself. It's individual casitas, and we have a clubhouse that's available with a library in there and an exercise room. There's a kitchen in the room but also there's a community kitchen that you can buy your meals and take them to the room or eat there in the dining room. We're independent, but there's also a nursing portion here, too. There's assisted living, but it's not on this particular site. We don't use food anymore because my wife has a stomach problem, so if we have meals, we use the things that we buy at the grocery store. The staff is great. As part of our monthly fee, they provide the water, there are gardeners that are part of the facility, and they have maintenance people that take care of anything that might be a problem in the unit. All of the rent on homes go up, but here, it doesn't. They have a 3% per year increase but it's very nominal.

Good Samaritan is a little older facility, so it is worn-out, and it is long-term care. It is assisted living and also a short-term rehab place, which is what my mother was involved in. They did a very good job with her. She had come in with congested heart failure symptoms after spending 3 days in a hospital. It was a little less organized, but they did a reasonable job. Unfortunately, the hospital that referred her fell down on the job in terms of getting us to a specialist. I had to really work hard with Good Samaritan to get them to refer my mother to a specialist. That was a big deal because you cannot go to a specialist without a referral, and Good Samaritan was wonderful with me to get that. They just need to put more money into the facility.

Good Samaritan Society is quite a large campus. There's a lot of things located very close to the independent living, like hospital, grocery stores, and pharmacies. They're well-known throughout the United States. The person that I did speak to was very helpful. It's also Christian-based. I very much like that; it's Lutheran. They offer a lot of things.

Upon entering the facility I noticed that residents were sitting about in wheelchairs in the hall. I was invited to walk through the facility which I did. Then I noted other residents interacting with each other. Some were conversing, some were playing bingo and the one holding the bingo session called out "" welcome. We have just started and you are welcome to join us ? I entered the dinning room where I noticed a staff member noticing that a resident was having difficulty feeding himself. She did not just sit down and start to rush him and feed him (which could have possibly made him feel inadequate and possibly he would stop eating). She handed him a special utensil which would assist him to feed himself with ease. At the same time she leaned over him from behind, and while saying something to him in his ear so that they both laughed, she quickly removed the hand towel that was around his neck (and quite messy) and put a clean one around his neck. All this was accomplished without his even being aware of it as he was laughing over whatever she had said to him. She patted him on his shoulder and moved on. thus sparing him any embarressment and unease. He proceeded to eat by himself feeling very independant. I was impressed by the kindness and caring shown in this situation.
