I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother went into a downward spiral in the three months that she was in Higley House. Within the first two weeks there, she came down with a severe abdominal skin infection and a bad bladder infection two months later. She started having delusions, hallucinations and acting out - likely caused or exacerbated by the bladder infection. Upon admission to Higley House, I stressed that my mother would need hands-on care with all bathing and toileting. And it became apparent to me that she was left on her own a lot. During the first month, I found a dried-out stool under her bed. Another time I found a saturated and soiled Depends in her waste basket in her room. And upon arrival during another visit, I found my mom in her room alone, standing, half dressed, looking confused and holding a saturated Depends with urine all over her hands. My mother also lost weight and she wasn't sleeping at all during the night. After 11 days at a behavioral health facility for medical and psychiatric care, she was released on May 7th and went directly to a different residential home where she is thriving. She is eating well and has put on weight, she sleeps through the night and is very rarely incontinent and only at night. Staff say she is a joy to have around. Staff at the new place are kind, compassionate, patient and very attentive. (In contrast to the staff at Higley House that to me often seemed stressed, hurried and overworked.) I feel like my mother is now in a place that puts people above profits. And I once again have some peace of mind and a lot less stress in my life. FYI, I gave 15 days notice as required by Higley House in their residential agreement. Initially, the owner refused to give me any money back claiming that 30 days notice was required to vacate. I asked to be shown in writing where that was stated. That request was not responded to. I was eventually able to get $1000 partial refund, but only after making it clear to the owner that I would take the contract to court on my mom's behalf. While I ranked the facilities as average overall, the house shows some neglect and a lack of overall cleanliness including bathrooms.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

This is not a caring home. The staff does bare minimum, let’s the client know when asking for help that “it’s not my job”. There are no organized activities. There was a night staff member that did a decent job of cleaning, but after he was gone, no one cleaned. When management was advised that several things on the care list were not be done and we were giving 15 days notice to leave, they insisted we needed to give 30 days and had to pay for 30. Basically saying, “prove it”. It’s all about the money and not about caring for seniors. Please do not consider Higley House for your loved ones.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I chose this place for my mother because of the level of staffing I witnessed on the tour, even though it was the most expensive of the places I looked at. I signed the contract, which stated that if she died I would get no refund, and wrote a check for over $5,000 for a month. Less than 24 hrs. after she arrived, mom died. Pretty good pay day for them. Quite a racket. The manager never gave me the courtesy of a phone call after her death and did not answer when I called him. When I went to pick up her things there was 1 staff member who barely looked up from her texting and did not follow their covid protocol. So much for great staffing. Visiting is by appointment. Red flags?

I visited this facility

We did not like Higley House. During our visit, I saw that it didn’t look like they had a lot of staff. The residents looked bored, like nobody was doing anything with them. A lot of them looked very ill. The place looked very outdated and was not very clean.

Provider Response

We appreciate your feedback. Our home is license for 10 and we have 2 staffs in all shifts which you can hardly find in the assisted living home setting. Property was built in 2005. I go there everyday to make sure that are resident is well taking cared of. We have great Dhs surveys, we can give you some referrence from current and previous families about our services. We continue to strive to our costumer with respect and dignity.
