I'm moving into Westminster Village. I've known Westminster Village since they opened in 1984. My parents lived there for 16 years. And I have loved the care and the attention they give to their residents. It's independent living, and it had just been refurbished and it looks great. They supply appliances, part of their monthly fee is one four-course meal a day, and their kitchen is wonderful. I've been there two or three times, and every one of them has been knowledgeable and friendly. The food was superb, off the menu, and cooked to order whatever you want. They have a clubhouse, a gym, a swimming pool, a walking trail, and it's a gated community. And their pool has a lift chair. So I, for instance, have knee problems. I can't climb the ladder anymore, but I love to swim, so they can get me out of the pool, which is great.

One of the main selling points of this facility is that if a resident runs out of money while living there, they will not be kicked out. Read the 50 page contract carefully and have an attorney and a financial advisor review it prior to signing. There are multiple loopholes that will allow the facility to not honor that pledge. The "initial investment" is confiscatory. My loved one paid $189,000.00. Then there's the rent of $36,000/year for a tiny apartment. The facility will review your financial records and basically if you run out of money, the contract will still allow them to kick you out if they deem that you have spent your money unwisely. So say goodbye to trips, vacations, helping out the grandkids or any financial independence. "Big Brother" will be watching. Another selling point is that there is a hair salon on site. It has not been open since my loved one moved in several months ago. The hallways are long and carpeted which makes using a walker difficult.

They do not communicate well with family members even though it is part of their policy. The administrative staff doesn’t know what’s going on or how to do their jobs. The working staff does what they can when short staffed. They do have kind people who work there but when policies are not followed it leaves us with an uneasy feeling about our loved ones safety. They aren’t qualified to handle memory care issues. Be very careful when selecting a place for your family. I would not recommend Westminster Village or Willowbrooke Court (their skilled nursing).

I liked what I saw at Westminster Village-Spanish Fort. I liked the location, the facilities, the homes, and the few people I interacted with. I was impressed with the person who showed us around. That individual was very knowledgeable and personable.

Westminster Village is a very nice place. We know several people that lived there. They say it's very nice. They're just maybe a bit dated. The staff was quite friendly. They had a library, they did have a chapel, they had a craft room and an art room.

My father was a resident at Willowbrooke Court for nearly 3 months. The rehab nurses are very helpful, but it feels like some of the nursing staff is only there to put in their hours. They are more telling the patients what to do, rather than asking them about their needs. The phone is always ringing when you walk in the facility, and no one is ever actually at the nursing station. The rooms are "cleaned" daily, but no one ever takes the trash, leftover lunch cups, etc. out, so the rooms feel cramped. My father was only given an actual shower one time in 2 1/2 months, although we repeatedly asked. He only got the shower after we begged a weekend nurse to please try to get it done. Senior staff did not care. He could sit in a wheelchair and stand and walk with assistance, but we were told they needed a "special shower chair" and it was on order. His bed sores continued to get worse, we were constantly told the chair would be there in 2 days, but it never showed up. If they know you are coming, they will have the patient up and dressed with attentive staff all around, but if you really want to know what it's like, show up when they don't know you are coming.

About Westminster Village - Spanish Fort in Spanish Fort, Alabama
Westminster Village is a non-profit CRCC, or Continuing Care Retirement Community, located in historic Spanish Fort, Alabama. While most of the units (80 percent) are independent living, the community also offers assisted living and skilled nursing units. CRCCs allow seniors to move in when they're independent and stay for the duration as their needs change. Couples need not separate because they require different levels of care. Westminster Village is the only accredited CRCC on the gulf coast.
Westminster Village is also the only CRCC in the area that offers a Life Care Plan, meaning that the facility received accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and Continuing Care Accreditation Commission (CCAC). These certifications represent outstanding quality and financial strength. The Life Care Plan directs long-term contracts to provide caregiving services, skilled nursing and housing in one facility, alleviating the need for resident moves.
The coastal community of Spanish Fort is just one mile from the eastern shore of Mobile Bay, and 35 minutes from the gulf. The neighboring Fair Hope is a highly desirable area for seniors with its picturesque downtown and thriving art community. Westminster Village provides transportation to the symphony, theater, space gallery and playhouse in the park. Residents are especially enthusiastic about attending Mobile's own annual Mardi Gras Parade and Ball.
Westminster Village boasts 56 wooded acres and beautiful Spanish architecture. Each level of living has its own dining room and activity program and all are just a short walk to common meeting areas like the Village Store and coffee corners.
The independent living units are in the main three-floor building, neighborhood apartments, and garden cottages.
Bay Ridge at Westminster contains the CCRC's memory care, rehabilitation, plus 62-bed skilled nursing and 28 assisted living units -- all connected to the main building's independent living units.
