About FirstLight HomeCare

Kathy Kotowski and David Newland met in high school and now -- years later -- they run FirstLight HomeCare. They know that one of the most important ways to help their clients is to understand their need for privacy. When going to a home to provide an assessment, they will take off any signage that implies caregivers belong to an agency. If a client prefers it, caregivers do not wear scrubs or their name badge when accompanying a client to help run errands or just to get some fresh air. Caregivers are also trained to encourage elders, who are able, to remain active for as long as possible while providing companionship, comfort and assistance. This helps older adults maintain the independence that's needed to be an integral part of keeping their household running and ensuring their own health and safety.

Kathy and David know that creating an atmosphere of responsibility and warmth for their staff directly translates to the way their caregivers provide the highest level of care. They have a low staff turnover and plan out meetings so that all the caregivers get to know other members of their staff to feel a sense of camaraderie. Staff members are never left alone and have the reassurance that their calls will be answered 24/7 by the owners. Kathy and David strongly believe that their caregivers are their greatest assets, urging all of them to continue their education, especially in dementia training, and providing monetary incentives for those that do.
