Jennifer Serafin, N.P. is a registered nurse and geriatric nurse practitioner at the Jewish Homes for the Aged in San Francisco.

Stage 2 emphysema, or moderate emphysema, means that your lung capacity is about 50% of normal. Since your lung function is decreased, you may have some shortness of breath on exertion, along with a cough.

The best treatment for emphysema is to stop smoking. Regarding exercise, I would recommend that you participate in a supervised pulmonary rehabilitation program. These programs last from 6-12 weeks, and will help you start an exercise program that is supervised by health professionals to make sure you are doing it correctly. They would let you know if an elliptical machine is a good choice for you, and they would supervise you to make sure you tolerate it. Good luck!
