Is there a program where I get paid to be my mom's caregiver?

A fellow caregiver asked...

Is there a program where I get paid to be my mom's caregiver? I now work and have someone come in and watch her. But I've heard that there is a government program that could help me.

Expert Answer

If your mother is on Medicaid or Medicaid eligible, there may be a program where you (or another family member) can get paid to be her home caregiver. These programs vary, state by state. Check out this Caring.com article with more information. You'll need to contact the Medicaid office serving your mom. In most cases this is the county. Some states may have programs for people who aren't Medicaid eligible, though this isn't too common. The US Government's Eldercare Locator can refer you to the appropriate government agencies serving your mom. (These are local agencies serving regions around the country.) Good luck.
