there are many parts to my review, but the overwhelming factor is the the effect of rehabilitation reports and social services on my son's stay.
first let me say that the level of service from the nurses, aides, etc and dr singh was outstanding and caring. my son was so well taken care of physically, mentally and socially. there are many names to mention such as julie, karlene, gerry, maria, ms jay, verna who assured the well being of my son after a major car accident. i must also mention with high marks the food service department who catered to a most picky eater putting on 30 lbs during his stay.
but alas the outstanding treatment is overshadowed by the performance of the social service /rehab relationship. their goal was not the well being of patient and caregiver . on day 2 our son was met by social worker jackie who explained his stay might be a few days due to not being a medicare or medicaid patient, be prepared for a day before notice for discharge. very unsettling after 3 hip surgeries, foot and shoulder surgeries. a new social worker arrived, janet rizzo, again pushing ahead on discharge even though my son was not able to dress, toilet or bath himself( still to this day 2 weeks after not able to). he was threatened with shelter transfer, private pay, and more it seems at the 20 day mark which seems to have a meaning. anyway my wife and i were beaten down finally with promises of in home aids, physical therapy and occupational therapy based on his condition. this was all bold faced lies plain and simple to execute a discharge. i explained it wouldnt be safe due to stairs and layout.... but again the report of therapist dan set the stage for an safe discharge( my son fell down the stairs at home on 2 occasions) and to add to our distrust, the discharge reports insured that we were eligible for no aide assistance, 1 pt evaluation and 1 ot visit. all services that ms rizzo assured would be offered based on his needs.
my advice would to be very careful dealing in this environment and if need be enlist legal counsel if you believe your loved one is being rushed through the system without regard for the next step outside. for the record also all who visited our home, nurse, pt and ot from northwell health, attest that this was not a safe discharge for the patient. at all
