I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident
This is not the facility for your loved one if your loved one has dementia or Alzheimer’s. The staff lacks knowledge on working with patients with dementia related conditions. They have no real method of dealing with those who suffer with it and are very insensitive to what the families are going through. My father was initially placed for rehab, which he received very little of, because even the contract physical therapists had no ability to understand the confusion and short-term memory loss that caused my father to “refuse” therapy. He was never encouraged to be mobile or continent, and lost both of those abilities within a few months. Less than two months later, after he became a full-time resident, we were told they needed to send him to a psychiatric facility to adjust medications to deal with his wandering behavior and confusion because despite having round the clock nursing staff, aides, and doctors, the facility said they were unable to monitor the effectiveness of any new medications for his dementia. They ended up sending him to Mary Black Hospital to the psychiatric unit. My father was never the same and went downhill rapidly after that, even though WO’s doctor took him right back off all the medicines the hospital started. We had to constantly stay on top of the staff about his hygiene and assistance with feeding. Again, they had no strategy to deal his dementia to accomplish even basic care or medication administration. We walked in to many heart-wrenching scenes and felt like we constantly had to fight to get good care. It was the worst, most exhausting experience of my life. White Oak Manor has a nice new building, but it will make no difference as long as they fail to educate the staff and administration.

I visited this facility
I was honestly shocked at the conditions I found here when visiting my husband's great-uncle. The residents were verbally abusive to each other in the tv area we walked through.. No one asked who we were or who we were there to see, which seems very dangerous. There was a squashed roach in the hallway that I saw an employee step over instead of cleaning it up. I can't imagine what the state of the rest of the facility is if that was in plain view. We also passed an employee talking about her weekend on the phone while residents were sitting waiting. I was extremely sad and distressed whhen we left and my husband and I have since begged my mother in law to remove him from this place.

My husband has been in White Oak Manor since July. They are pretty popular here in Spartanburg. I don't have any problems. Sometimes my husband is a bit unruly and they seem to calm him down. However, one thing I would suggest on any nursing home is that they just not wait for them to call them. They should occasionally stick their head and see if they need something. My husband has fallen several times and they are quick to react to that, but there are some times when you walk down the hallway and you might smell a little urine or something like that. But there is always room for improvement.

I visited this facility
I had a 15-minute tour at Wide Oak Manor. The owner toured me around. It was a very nice visit. The place is new and their facility is very nice. The rooms seemed to be clean. Everybody seemed to be cordial and happy. They look like they have good working condition. The shower rooms and the dining hall looked really good. It's a family-owned business and I think they're really here for the good of the people who needed care although they are expensive.
