    I visited this facility

My older brother, 58, went to Regal Care at Prospect after a stroke and a month of rehabilitation at Gaylord. A week after admittance, he had a second stroke. From then until his death six weeks later, apparently of a third stroke at Regal, he was admitted to Waterbury Hospital five times from the nursing home, with conditions from aspirated pneumonia and partial renal failure, dehydration, and unexplained bouts of vomiting, apparently with blood. After his second stroke, he could no longer speak or swallow and had to be fed by feeding tube to his stomach. Before the second stroke, he expressed concern that particular staff at Regal had been mean to him, perhaps in connection with urinary incontinence. I have no prior experience with nursing homes but believe this one may have been understaffed. The Sunday afternoon about 12 hours before he died, there were only five other cars in the normally crowded lot of perhap 50 spaces, and it was the same lack of cars, for a 120-bed facility, when my mother and I got there at 6am upon hearing of his death. Most staff that I met seemed nice, but we were unable to get my brother admitted to a different home after repeated attempts--it seems to be part of the Medicaid system in CT that once admitted to hospital, the sending home must keep the bed available for readmittance and gets paid to keep it vacant. The incentives of that system need improvement, as it almost rewards homes that have frequent hospital admittance. I visited two other homes in the area, and Regal was average in terms of the environment although my brother's room was overcrowded, with 3 beds meant for a space of 2. The other two occupants were in virtual vegetative state or at least extremely quiet (i.e. did not use the TV or talk). My brother's girlfriend, a certified nursing assistant, spent hours with him every day. I also visited every day for his final month after I arrived from overseas to help my mother who had been doing the same for the first two months before getting overly exhausted.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My husband is a resident of Paradigm Healthcare Center for 2 months now. The place is highly recommended by my daughter-in-law. Everybody is nice and good. They take very good care of him, they have a lot of help and they have things for them. The food is good.

    I visited this facility

This nursing home is not as great as I thought it would be because I consider Prospect, CT a somewhat of a decent upper middle class area. The facility itself is pretty. It has a really nice dining areas and a mimicked living room area with a huge TV. The only problem is, my grandfather is 100% Portuguese and when I am not available to see my grandfather, he is extremely depressed and lonely. The meals there are awful! They are not nutritious. I never see fruit or a fresh vegetable in his plates whenever I am there. It is always starches, heavy meats, and canned vegetables. They always offer enough sweets though. I don't like that at all. Another bad thing is he is not being bathed enough nor is his false teeth being cleaned. He developed very bad halitosis and now recently he has jock itch that he cannot stop itching. I only like the fact that it is a safe place for him. I do like the fact that if anything were to happen to him, that help is at his side. I'm just crushed that me and my mother cannot find a place well enough that will intensely take care of an elderly person.

When my mother and I first walked into Paradigm of Prospect , we immediately felt uplifted. Just as you walk into the facility , the facility offers an ambiance of comfort and welcomeness. We immediately felt at ease and knew that we had chosen the right place for my grandfather to spend the rest of his life. The staff always greets you with a smile and helps you out in any way that they can. My grandfather loves going to physical and occupational therapy and the therapists there have seen him grow stronger and stronger since he has been there. He is now at his optimal level. He bunks with 2 other elderly men in decent size room . His meals are always hot and fresh .My grandfather picky eater but he eats the food anyways. The rooms and wings are all close together so that all that are housed at Paradigm can easily interact with one another. Overall , I'd say we are pleased with our decision and can be rest assured that my grandfather is receiving round the clock care in a place where he live worry free.
