I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother moved into Little Neck Care Center. It is sort of a rehab/nursing facility. I like them. They are very nice people. They seem to be very competent, and they are very attentive. Her room is nice and clean. I have no problems with the cleanliness or their communication. They provide information.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

This facility is an example of terrible care and uncaring staff. I am a healthcare professor (with no vested or financial interest in nursing homes) and was shocked at how poor the facility is. A family member came here for rehab. My relative had been totally mobile and independent prior to a fall and needed PT to recover. Immediately on arrival staff refused to take her to the bathroom or give her a bed pan. My relative was told to “go in the bed and we’ll clean you up later.” On my insistence to get a bedpan, it took more than an hour for staff to find one. I learned that they put all residents in diapers. This in in conflict with all standards of skin care. My relative was on many important medications of which the facility was aware prior to transfer from the hospital. In fact, the hospital case manager said she had asked the facility if they needed to send meds and they did not. My relative repeatedly ask for her meds. It turned out the facility has no pharmacy and has to order the meds. It took 2 days for them to arrive. My relative became hypertensive as she was missing her blood pressure medicine. She had other negative side effects because of their failure to give her ordered medications. When they finally arrived, it took the staff 6 hours to give my relative the first doses. The nursing supervisor said “the staff is serving medication. To other residents” with absolutely no concern that my relative had missed all medications for 2 days. The Nurses’ Aides run the unit. They talk down to the RNs and are verbally and physically abusive to the residents. We witnessed many episodes of Nurses Aides screaming at residents, turning their backs on residents who were asking for help, and one incident of a staff hitting a resident who had been calling for help. Several aides refused to help my relative to the bathroom. I went out and spoke to an RN who came in to help. The aides were useless one aide came in my relatives room to brush her teeth (the sink was right next to my relative), a total lack of professionalism. At the time of this experience, masks were still required in health care facilities. My sister asked for a mask and was told “Masks are for staff not patients.” I brought masks for my relative to use. I did call to speak to the Director of Nursing who did not call me back. I did speak to the Assistant Director of Nursing who did come to meet with us. He listened and appeared kind. By this time my relative had had enough and we asked for a discharge in 2 days with home care followup. I went to speak to case management and social work about the discharge. On discharge there was no home care. I called Little Neck asking if the referral was sent many times. They told me their fax machine did not work. We had to take my relative to her personal physician who then ordered home care. This is a TERRIBLE Nursing Home / Rehab. Given current standards they should be closed or bring in a new leadership team. Do not send anyone here!!! Some additional facts: - Food is terrible. Residents get no choice. One night the meal was pasta and cut up hot dogs. I had to bring in food. - Parking is difficult. It is in a residential area and street parking is hard to find. There is a shopping center across the parkway, but they tow your car if you park more than 3 hours. - Remarkably, the Physical Therapist was very nice and confidentially told me that they were going to leave since the nursing staff was so unkind and uncaring. - Rooms are primarily 2 and 4 bed. They are small. There are no amenities. My relative was offered no activities which was blamed on the pandemic. I did write letters with specifics with names of staff to both the Director of Nursing and Administrator. They never responded. Again, the care here is unacceptable and overall, the staff are grossly neglectful, incompetent, uncaring and under supervised. Find another facility. NEVER SEND ANY HUMAN HERE! It is UNSAFE!

Unfortunately I had to take matters into my own hands as one particular nurse deemed a resident medically stable. This resident was feeling I’ll for 48 hours and requested iv and oxygen and was declined it due to being told it was not needed that the vitals were normal. Thankfully, I could see the dryness in the eyes and mouth due to dehydration and the shortness of breath when this resident spoke. Upon arriving to the hospital 30-45 minutes later, in fact the cruel nurse was wrong. The resident had fever, was dehydrated and needed several bags of iv, had low oxygen and needed oxygen, and had a bad infection. If I didn’t take matters into my own hands, the doctors at the hospital said this would have been so much worse. Listening to a resident who has their wits about them and is stable mentally is very important. Thankfully this resident has advocates to ensure the nursing home didn’t create what could been irreversible.

It is impossible to get any information on my wife's condition. All I get is pushed from one office to another. Never get to talk with the doctor.

Little Neck Care Center is probably the nicest nursing home in queens. Been visiting my grandpa here for a few months and always feel good knowing he’s being taken care of. You can’t beat the location either.
